I would strongly advise anyone to think twice before buying from Hippo Motor Group in Peterborough.
I recently returned a BMW X3 to them due to multiple issues with the vehicle. Despite the car now being back in their possession and already relisted for sale, I am still waiting for my deposit to be refunded. It has now been over a week since the car was handed back, and I’m still being told to wait for updates from customer service.
This has been extremely frustrating and disappointing. Once they had the car back, I expected the refund process to be handled promptly and professionally, but instead I’m still chasing them for my own money.
What concerns me even more is that the same BMW X3 is already back on their website for sale while my deposit remains unpaid. That does not feel right at all from a customer service perspective.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing that BMW X3, and I would urge other buyers to be cautious when dealing with this dealership.

I had a lease with another company which came to an end, and decided to explore options elsewhere. I found a used lease car with Hippo and the whole process was handled by Tom Beeres, who was incredibly helpful and understood my individual circumstances. The car was delivered on a date of my choosing by Alan Thomson, the handover was great and he showed me everything I needed to know about the car. I would absolutely recommend Hippo to friends and family.

Absolutely unacceptable experience
Absolutely unacceptable experience – this company put my life and my children’s lives at risk.
I purchased a vehicle from Hippo which turned out to be dangerously faulty. From early on, I reported issues with the car, including a ticking noise and system faults. These were dismissed, and despite multiple diagnostic reports (which I had to pay for myself), the problems were not properly addressed.
The situation escalated severely. The car began:
- Engaging the electronic handbrake while driving
- Throwing itself into “Park” at low speeds
- Malfunctioning with constant alarms and electrical faults
I had multiple near-collisions with my children in the car.
Despite this, Hippo delayed, dismissed concerns, failed to provide full call recordings, and even went back on their word regarding a courtesy vehicle, leaving me out of pocket again.
After their “repair”, the fault returned almost immediately.
Then the worst happened.
While driving home from work, I had to brake suddenly to avoid a deer. The car’s handbrake engaged by itself again, causing loss of control and resulting in a crash. The vehicle has now been recovered and is likely a write-off.
Despite everything:
- My insurers are paying Hippo directly
- I have been left out of pocket (7 diagnostic reports and travel costs)
- I have no car
- I was refused a proper courtesy vehicle because this was classed as a “natural accident”
I am now a single parent of 3 children, living in a rural area, with no transport at all.
This happened after I repeatedly warned them the car was unsafe.
This company has shown a complete disregard for safety, responsibility, and the real-life impact on customers.
I have escalated this to the Motor Ombudsman and will be pursuing further action.
Avoid at all costs.

Attended to pick up my car abit earlier than my 13:00hrs appointment and was made to feel very comfortable through the whole proccess of the nitty gritty of collecting and driving off in my new vechicle, everything from looking around the vechicke to sorting out taxing was gone through together.

I recently purchased a vehicle from Hippo Motor Group and have been trying to get in touch regarding some serious issues, but the complete lack of response has been the most frustrating part of this experience.
Shortly after purchase, I found that the air conditioning is not working at all. I had this checked at Halfords, and they confirmed the system is entirely non functional. There also appears to be a leak in the windscreen washer system.
I raised this directly with them, expecting at the very least an acknowledgement or some form of support. Instead, I have been met with silence. No reply, no update, nothing.
The issues themselves are concerning, but what is worse is being ignored when trying to resolve them. Customer service should not stop the moment a sale is completed.
At this point, I am simply asking for someone to come back to me and take responsibility for investigating what are clearly problems that need addressing.
Very disappointing experience.
