My son mentioned the residue which I had also noticed. Checked on line and low and behold the product has been changed. It tastes slightly more bitter and now more like the other brands I had ditched for Kenco smooth.
Very disappointing. I will use what I have, and then be trying other brands to see if I can find anything similar to the old taste.
I drink one, midmorning, cup of coffee per day and I want to enjoy it rather than force it down 🙁

The new blend of Kenco coffee is awful. It taste very bitter and leaves a weird dark syrup looking sediment in the bottom of the mug after drinking. Certainly not the coffee that I have been accustomed too. Please change it back to the previous blend as I will not be purchasing this product again until it is!!

Kenco have changed their recipe, and I now find it almost undrinkable, due to the heavy, powdery black/brown sludge, that now ruins it. I will not be buying it again. I complained directly to Jacobs, and this is their response: "Because the product contains finely ground coffee, you may notice a small amount of coffee residue or sediment left in the cup or mug after preparation. This is a natural result of the blend composition and is expected with this recipe". Small amount my $%&! Such a shame, as I've been using it for decades, but no longer, and looking at Kenco's other reviews, nor will a great many others :-(

Used to buy this all the time but, now recipe has changed, will be switching brands. Ken o coffee now tastes bland and leaves a disgusting sludge at the bottom of the cup. Also does not dissolve that well.

This is awful coffee. Please change it back. Like all these reviewers I am looking for old stock or seeking an alternative. How can you market an instant coffee that does not dissolve?

Absolutely awful! The new jar looks good but the contents are very poor! The sediment left in the bottom of the cup is awful & the taste is bitter.
I've always bought Kenco Rich, this rebrand which is basically a fancy way to give consumers less for their money is a huge backwards step. I trusted this brand - sadly the product quality has reduced, the taste is disgusting, you can't lower the the standard of a product and dress it up in a new jar and expect consumers to accept it!!

Quality has dropped. It smells ok in the jar but I can't remember the last time it tasted decent. What have they done? Cheaper coffee beans? Or a production issue?

The new Kenco coffee is absolutely awful. I am looking now to ditch this brand that I have used for over 10 years. Can’t believe what they were thinking.

Kenco Rich coffee - a staple of mine since 2006!! What have you done to it? I thought it was me with a couple of bad jars until I googled! Firstly reduction in size of jar - really? Secondly and most important the taste and the look of the made drink! It looks thick and laggy in my mug - like a percolated coffee without being percolated. It leaves very brown marks in my mug, 🍵 t is definitely not mixing correctly and it tastes watery but bitter! Nothing like it was and I have given it a good go! Trialling others now to change brands - very disappointed to be doing this - please put it back to how it was / should be and let me know when things done!! Thanks

This new blend is awful! I’m put off drinking it before I even start because of the tide mark it leaves around the top of the cup nevermind the sludge at the end. It’s embarrassing serving it up guests and the taste is nowhere near as good. Says cheaper blend and less of it to me. Managed to get a couple of the older style jars at my local Tesco and once they run out I’ll be switching to a different coffee entirely. Poor choices Kenco

What have they done. I have been buying this coffee for a very long time and loved it but now the residue floats on top and also staining the mugs. I will not be buying this in future, such a shame.

I have bought Kenco Rich for many, many years, wearing each price leap with a shrug and an "it's worth it" comment. But no more. I could forgive the "shrinkflation" and the patronising assumption that we wouldn't notice. But not the actual coffee. What have you done? It is revolting! A nasty film on top, a powdery mouth-feel, a bitter taste and a hideous sludge at the end of the cup. Why the change? I'm clearly not the only loyal customer who is now off to find a replacement.

There's not much you can rely on these days, but for 20 odd years a decent cup of coffee in the mornings was. Until NOW! Oh Kenco - what have you done?!?

I understand the shrinkflation - I can even forgive the brown sludge - but the taste??? It's like drinking dishwater - no better than a cup of Nescafé.

I've been singing Kenco's praises since collecting the wee tokens years ago - but sadly, now need to find an alternative. I used to admire Kenco for it's ethics and was willing to pay a bit more.

I know it's all down to profit, but unless you change the recipe back (and I would happily pay more for a decent cup of coffee), you have ditched your loyal fan base and have cheapened your product in a sad attempt to appeal to the masses. Do you really think they will be prepared to pay for an inferior product? Shame on you Kenco!

I have drank kenco smooth for many years. Recently it’s tasted bitter and the dark horrible sludge in the bottom of the cup is nauseating. I have experienced headaches too. I thought it was just me or maybe just a bad batch, but from these reviews it seems not. I have thrown away my new jar - I wouldn’t even gift this to someone, and will be trying other brands. Sorry Kenco another customer lost.

We have been Kenco coffee drinkers for many years and have never deviated away from them until now. The new recipe taste is frankly awful. Watery, tasteless, leave a horrible residue at the bottom of the cup, I drink my coffee black and this new blend even looks different, now it’s muddy looking. Please Kenco!! Go back to your old recipe taste. I cannot believe that anyone thinks this is a good move!
We will not be buying it again as it is.

Disgusting!!! Horrid taste and loads of residue left in the cup . Why change something that worked and tasted just fine!! My partner and son said we will have to change to another brand as it's absolutely disgusting and weak, dirty sediments at the bottom of the cup, silly jewel jar change too, I have no words left!!!

They've changed the ingredients, not the same rich taste as before and reduced the size of jar and contents, that's pure greed.
I've stopped buying their product

A dreadful change to what was my favourite instant coffee!!! My most recent jar (Aug 2026) is the new smaller size & shape. But the coffee, eughhh the coffee, now tastes so weak. I always buy the ‘rich’ blend as I prefer a stronger tasting coffee, but this is now just awful and tastes like some cheap 99p blend. Doesn’t dissolve well either. A poor show Kenco
