Support Your Local Fishmonger,

One star for the quality of the fish! The rest of the organisation is getting worse month by month.
As a long term customer the delivery is hit and miss and DPD seem not to prioritise fresh produce deliveries. What is worse is that the staff in the office wash their hands with the issues always ready with an excuse that blames someone else. I think it is now time to support my local fish suppliers and probably save a fair chunk of money!

On 6th fishbox now and very happy so far

We've been getting boxes for months now and are really happy with what we get. The fish is always super fresh and comes with such variety. Been tasting some varieties that we didn't know existed, but are delicious.

We are on our 6th fishbox now after my parents got us interested. They are very happy with the service after using it for a year or so.

We started with a small, moved quickly to a medium, and are now on a large every 2 weeks.

So far, all excellent. The fish is wonderfully fresh, and we've had a wide selection, from pacific oysters to king scallops to prized turbot and sole.

What you get in terms of weight each time of course depends on how expensive the fish is, so you will obviously get less kg of rare, expensive fish, and more of abundant species.

I terms of value, if you go for a small box, then a lot of the cost is packaging. So just like their website says, a bigger box is always going to give more bang per buck. And of course fresh, chilled delivery will always make it more expensive than going to a fish shop. But then if you don't live near a good fish shop (we don't)... and fish shops often just stock the standard cod, salmon that people ask for... and you really love seafood, then fishbox could be for you.

Now on the big box, we feel it is good value for us.

Fresh fish freezes super well, so we get our large box now every 2 weeks and stick most in the freezer to use every few days until the next box. For the quality and variety, definitely happy so far.

We also like the surprise element and that we are eating what's being caught which is key to sustainability. A big problem with fishing is the supermarkets etc tend to demand the standard fish that everyone knows, meaning the lesser known varieties can be wasted; catches invariably produce a mix and not just what was desired. With the fishbox approach, nothing should be wasted.

As for customer service... the website is easy and we are getting what we said we liked. A request to shift our delivery date was dealt with politely and quickly.

In terms of freshness etc. Doing this by post must be tricky as a day late could mean things going awry. We are in the Scottish borders so quite far from Fraserburgh, but still in the same country!

I'll report back if there are any issues in the future.

EDIT. DPD, who deliver our box, caused a 24-hour delay. Box spent a night in their sorting office. The next day it arrived and was still cool enough due to the ice packs in the box so fine. An email to fishbox in the morning got a rapid response to say this should be the case before it arrived.

DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE MONEY

I wish I had read the reviews first before I signed up. I had opted for the £35 & when it arrived I was disappointed to say the least. Four pieces of fish of which two were what I said I did not want, so basically I have paid £35 for a thin piece of white fish, & 2 thin pieces of salmon, what a joke, I contacted fishbox a few times & complained but no one had the decently to get back in touch, poor customer services. No I would definitely NOT recommend fishbox.

Very expensive for what we received

Received our first Fishbox this morning - the quality was excellent but it was extremely expensive for what arrived: £27.00 for 1 x bag of mussels, 2 x small pieces of Pollock and 2 x pieces of smoked Haddock.
I individually priced the contents using the highest figures I could find online per kilo, the total coming to £18, so essentially we paid £9 for post and packaging. The website states that post and packaging is free, but it's just a case of wording. I called the company and they said they increase the prices of the products to encompass the P&P so customers don't have to pay extra at the end. However, it feels to me like misleading advertising. For where we live and local access to seafood there's not much point in spending so much more for Fishbox. We've cancelled our order.

I absolutely love my fishbox…

I absolutely love my fishbox subscription and am always excited to open each one to see what I’ve got this time. I’ve had a huge variety of fish over the three boxes I’ve had so far, always really fresh and perfectly sized portions. They are also great at communicating when your next delivery is coming and have a handy ‘holiday’ feature if you want to postpone. I’ve recommended them to anyone that will listen!

Always pleased with the quality of the…

Always pleased with the quality of the fish and there is a good range of different fish, so I've definitely enjoyed learning to cook new meals. The fact that the fish is sustainable and local is also great. A large box is enough for about 3 meals for 2 adults, I would say, so it's not the cheapest but I think the quality, convenience and the fact that it's local and sustainable make up for that.

I’m very surprised by the negative…

I’m very surprised by the negative reviews. I subscribed to Fishbox just over a year ago and have always received very fresh fish - even on one occasion when I wasn’t home for the delivery and it was delivered the next day and another, last summer, when I returned home several hours after the delivery. The quantity of ice in the box, and the insulated box itself, has kept the fish very cool and fresh.
For example, skate, which needs to eaten as fresh as possible, has always been in great, and delicious, condition.
I’ve just eaten, for the first time in my life, Shetland witches. Absolutely delicious and a good rival to Dover sole. I’ve faced some challenges - what to do with monkfish cheek and cod’s “tongue” - but find the recipe cards and blog (and online recipes) very helpful. I. Now a big fan of both!
I’ve really enjoyed eating a wider range of fish than is available in supermarkets and local fishmongers (and I live close to, and used to shop at, Billingsgate fish market). I also enjoy eating what is caught, rather than having so much fish wasted.
Thank you Fishbox, you have widened my horizons and helped me to cook it well.

Fish delivery rancid.

Recent delivery of fish all had a use by date of 3rd May. Opened some up on 1st and 2nd of May having been kept in the fridge and it had gone rancid. I've had to remove what I had put in the freezer and dispose of as it's likely that is wasted. Only item I could use was 110g of smoked salmon out of a £35 box. The cost of the fish is quite high but I was willing to pay extra to support a small business but sending me fish which was off means I can't continue to support them.

Tiny portions; hit and miss

Once ended up with a whole box full off scallops - my other choices were ignored. Complained and had no response. Another time, the hake was also hit and miss - again having had nearly a box full of one type of fish. One piece had a horrible odour. I think they got complacent with increased custom over lockdown. Portions are also miniscule. I weigh under 8st but 140g for any adult is not enough

Long standing customer but had to leave.

I have been a customer for around two years or and in the early days the portions were generous varied and exceptional quality. I had a monthly standing order and deliveries were fine until around 3 - 4 months ago when quantities started dropping. I complained but was told they could make up a bigger order if I had cheaper fish. This didn't used to be the case previously as there was always a good variety in each box. The final straw came in February this year when my order included six portions (originally used to receive ten portions) of which only two of which were white sea fish. The rest being hot smoked Salmon and farmed Sea Trout. I cancelled my standing order after all this time and didn't even get the courtesy of a reply. They asked me for feedback but didn't respond to that either. I think the business changed hands a while back as originally if there was a problem the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Shoddy treatment all round.

Very poor customer service.

First Delivery was great, second delivery was too little amount of product compared with the first one, I complained, third delivery was really poor, I sent a picture what they sent me, they answer me saying the fish they sent me was the most expensive, but as I was complaining too much, they just delete my account...

Unresponsive retailer

Sad to say I'm very disappointed with Fishbox to whom I was recommended by a friend. The first delivery was 6 oysters, a fish pie mix and some brill (which we haven't eaten yet). The oysters and fish pie mix were ok but I thought it quite expensive (£32)
Second delivery was hake, lemon sole, and salmon...I put them straight in the freezer but when defrosted and opened they all stank and were inedible. Very disappointing.
I cancelled future orders and explained why on their website. The most disappointing thing is that I have had no feedback at all from Fishbox. I can well understand that occasionally you get a dodgy delivery (and judging by the other reviews this could be possible) but to not get any response from the company is poor in my view.

Thank you Fishbox!

I think we’ve had a fishbox subscription for almost a year. I keep meaning to review - frankly, it’s amazing!

But I have just shucked three of the most delicious fresh oysters and was almost beside myself with happiness. In the last box we got amazing mussels - so beautiful and such a treat.

You can choose Your preferences and also if you would prefer to not have something in your box. The fish is beautiful and the whole thing is great.

Great quality and choice!

We are three boxes in and are really enjoying them. The quality is excellent and I’m enjoying the fact that we have access to fish I may not normally try. There are also heaps of recipe ideas which are fantastic. My kids love when the box arrives so we can see what we have for the week! I’ve found for a family of four a large box weekly (plus I add one more portion of fish) gives us enough for 4/5 generous meals. Keep up the good work Fishbox! Thank you.

Not good value for money

I ordered a "large" box - which cost £45.

I received c1.6KG of fish meaning a cost of about £28 per KG.

This does not represent good value for money, given other alternatives.

Ordered a fish box and it came quickly

Ordered a fish box and it came quickly. We don’t have to meal plan as much as we have lots of fish to work with. It actually works out cheaper than if you buy fish a lot from the supermarket and it’s better quality. Also had a little recipe inside the box for what to do with the langoustines that we ordered. I’m impressed. we eat lots of fish and not other meat so it’s a huge part of our diet.

Very expensive for what you get

Very expensive for what you get. Tried it for three months and only received 5 different products in the end - and the value of the fish definitely wasn't worth it. Cancelling it now. There are far better suppliers up in Scotland that are value for money and actually bother replying to emails and phone calls. Or, if possible, support your local fishmonger

Terrific quality of fish

I have found the quality of fish, and what you get in your box excellent value for money.

It’s nice to get your box not knowing what’s going to be in it, but also a downside to you can only plan your meals once it’s arrived.

Nonetheless terrific company and a satisfied customer

Best to be safe and list what you don’t want...

Unfortunately only one of the seafood items I had requested for a gift box were supplied. When I expressed disappointment, I got a quick reply indicating that I didn’t list all my dislikes. However, the only direction on the website is “Tailor your giftbox to suit your recipient’s preferences - tell us what they would love and we'll do our best to include it!” For this simple reason the product was a failure as a gift and thus my low score. Let’s hope you have a more positive experience especially as other customers have been impressed by the quality of the product, but I would recommend that you list everything you don’t want to avoid disappointment.
