RAC Took More Than Triple My Monthly Premium — Then Dodged the Key Question! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
My experience with RAC Car Insurance has been appalling.
Following a relatively minor incident, my monthly premium increased from approximately £80 to £264 — more than three times what I had previously been paying.
My complaint was not simply that the premium had increased. My central concern was that this substantially higher amount was taken from my account without RAC providing me with any satisfactory explanation as to when I had agreed to that revised payment, or when and how I had been clearly notified in advance that £264 would be taken.
I raised this point specifically as part of a formal complaint.
RAC has now issued its final response — and incredibly, it still does not answer that question.
Instead, RAC explains that it is a broker, that premiums are based on risk, and that the insurer determines pricing. But that was never the issue I was asking them to address.
The question is very simple:
When did RAC tell me that £264 was going to be taken from my account, where is the evidence that this was communicated to me in advance, and on what basis did they consider themselves entitled to collect such a dramatically increased amount?
Their final complaint response does not answer it.
I have also been told that if I cancel the policy because I cannot afford this enormous increase, I would still owe £1,446.64 because the claim remains open.
So I am effectively left with a choice between continuing to pay approximately £264 per month, or cancelling and still being pursued for a four-figure balance.
Throughout this process I have repeatedly been passed between RAC, the insurer and different departments, with nobody appearing willing to take overall responsibility for the customer experience.
The online-only service has made matters worse. I found it extremely difficult to obtain meaningful help and only after complaining did RAC amend my account so that I could speak to customer services by telephone.
What is particularly striking is that, having now read recent reviews from other RAC Car Insurance customers, I can see repeated complaints concerning steep premium increases, unexpected charges, poor communication, difficulty speaking to someone and customers struggling to obtain clear answers.
I wish I had read those reviews before taking out the policy.
I have now received RAC’s final complaint response and, in my view, it fails to address one of the most fundamental points I raised.
I am now taking this matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
If you have had a similar experience with RAC Car Insurance — particularly involving a large premium increase, unexpected payments, cancellation charges or difficulty getting a clear explanation — please contact me. I would be very interested to hear from others who have experienced the same issues, and to understand whether there is a wider pattern that should also be brought to the attention of the Financial Ombudsman Service.
My advice to anyone considering RAC Car Insurance is simple: read the recent reviews carefully, read every term relating to premium changes and cancellation, and make sure you understand exactly what can happen to your payments if anything changes during the policy.
I expected far better from a company carrying the RAC name.

Good prices but they increase every year
The Rac prices are competitive, perhaps the prices keeps going up at around £50 per year, althoguth having no claims all my life.

Asked for Renual price came back £140 more than last time said I won’t renew they instantly came back a hundred pounds cheaper, why not give me that price in the first place? Anyway I got insurance £200 cheaper with Aviva

As an intermediary, our initial renewal quotes are generated automatically by our underwriting panel using standard market algorithms.
