TN Nursery specializes in bare-root and young nursery stock, and our BOGO plants are priced accordingly. Bare-root plants can look surprisingly small when they arrive because customers are receiving the living root or crown that establishes and develops into the mature plant shown on our website.
A small dormant plant is not necessarily a poor-quality or unhealthy plant. Many of our bare-root perennials spend their first growing season establishing underground and may not produce substantial visible growth until the following spring.
We're also sorry to hear you ordered from us "accidentally," but the size and appearance of young bare-root stock should not be compared with mature container plants sold at retail garden centers.
We hope you'll give the plants an opportunity to establish before deciding their quality based solely on their appearance upon arrival.

Coneflowers are shipped as dormant bare-root perennials, and the roots can look unimpressive when they arrive. That appearance alone does not necessarily mean the root is rotten or nonviable.
Once planted, Coneflowers often focus on establishing their root systems underground first and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.
Please leave it planted and give it the proper establishment period. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when it emerges next spring!

Disappointing experience
It was a first to have plants shipped barefoot wrapped in paper in a common shipping envelope. The plants were completely dry and so were in terrible condition upon arrival. I did all I could to resuscitate them but only two managed to bounce back. It’s okay - lesson learned.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root plants, so they are intentionally shipped without pots or soil and carefully packaged for transit. Dormant bare-root plants can look surprisingly dry or lifeless when they arrive, but that appearance does not necessarily mean they are dead.
The fact that two of your plants have already produced growth is encouraging. The remaining plants may simply be establishing at a different rate. Many bare-root perennials focus on developing their root systems underground during their first season and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.
Please don't give up on the remaining plants yet. Leave them planted, continue appropriate care, and give them their full establishment period. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised next spring.

Nothing at all like the picture on your site
The website shows a picture of bareroot milkweed with lots of roots, very healthy looking. What I received looked like dried out sticks, very hard to tell which was the root end and which was the growth end. Planted them, nothing so far.

Milkweed is shipped as a dormant bare-root perennial, and individual roots naturally vary in size, shape, and appearance. Some may have more feeder roots than others, and dormant roots can look surprisingly dry or stick-like when they arrive.
The product photos show examples of our bare-root stock, but no two living root systems will ever look exactly alike.
Most importantly, Milkweed can spend its first season establishing underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring. Please leave the roots planted and give them their full establishment period before determining they haven't grown.

trillium rhizomes
I bought a package of trillium rhizomes. They were delivered in good condition. And they look very healthy. They also came with a very nice set of instructions on how to care for them.
The only issue is my fault. I ordered them on July 9, which was too early in the year when it is still hot. I should have waited until early fall. Since I didn't, I put them in my refrigerator to keep until it cools off. I'll get them in the ground this fall. If they don't survive, it will probably be because of my actions rather than the quality of the rhizomes that I ordered.

Less than half the plants I have…
Less than half the plants I have ordered have not survived in spite of amending the soil, planting in well drained soil, and planting in recommended locations. The most disturbing thing is having plants replaced without by the company without proper notification. For example, I ordered a butterfly garden that was supposed to contain various plants. I received 5 butterfly bushes which was fine. I received 10 trumpet vines which are highly invasive and for which I have no room to plant.
There is no way I can accommodate plants which not only choke out everything that I have planted but also reach heights of 30 feet and need extensive maintenance.
I trusted The Appalachian Storyteller’s recommendation that this was an excellent and honorable company which had provided plants for sites such as The Washington Monument, but I now realize that such sites have hundreds of people maintaining these plantings.
When looking online I found many complaints about this company and the failure of their plants to grow. I also researched the most trusted plant sources online and this company was not on the list.
When I went to the websites of the recommended suppliers the information I found about growth habits, warnings about invasiveness, optimal planting times and other valuable information which I found more useful. The other suppliers have lifetime warranties while TN Nursery supplies a gift certificate and limited time to determine success of the plants. TN Nursery is so expensive especially shipping costs for a small package containing only roots.

First, please don't assume the plants that haven't produced visible growth have died. Many of our bare-root perennials establish underground during their first growing season and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.
Regarding the Butterfly Garden, our plant collections are assortments and may include substitutions based on seasonal availability. However, if you believe you received 10 Trumpet Vines in place of the advertised assortment, please contact us with your order number so we can review exactly what was selected and shipped.
Your review also relies heavily on complaints, rankings, and information you found about other companies online. Those sources do not describe your individual transaction with TN Nursery, and warranty programs and pricing structures vary considerably between nurseries.
Shipping bare-root plants also allows us to offer many varieties at substantially lower plant prices than comparable mature container-grown plants. Customers are paying for viable nursery stock—not the weight or size of the shipping package.
TN Nursery has been a family-owned nursery since 1959, and we have supplied plants for residential gardens as well as prominent projects across the country. We appreciate your feedback, but we encourage you to give your bare-root plants their full establishment period before determining their survival rate.

Only 6 of the plants have done anything…
Only 6 of the plants have done anything the rest arrived in very bad shape and have done nothing. This was a test order for our garden club which is doing a large native garden in the community. I can’t at this point recommend we place a large order.

The fact that six are already producing growth is encouraging.
For a community native garden, patience with bare-root material is especially important because it behaves very differently from established potted plants. Please leave the remaining plants in place and allow them their full establishment period.
We hope your garden club will evaluate the entire test order next spring, when the plants have had a complete establishment cycle. We'd love to hear how many additional plants emerge before you make a final decision about your larger native garden project.
