Poor quality and customer service
Very disappointing product quality and even worse customer service
I had a mixed experience with my order. Some of the plants appeared fine and were planted, but others arrived in very poor condition, including a soggy, unusable clump that developed fungus shortly afterward.
What really turned a disappointing order into a bad overall experience was the customer service.
I contacted TN Nursery within a few days of delivery, provided photos, and asked for a reasonable resolution for the affected plants. Rather than actually address the condition of what I received, customer service relied on a strict 24-hour reporting policy and refused to offer a replacement or refund.
There was no information in the box drawing attention to this extremely short reporting window. When I explained that and asked how they planned to resolve the situation, the response was essentially just to send me an image of the policy again.
That is not what I consider good customer service.
I was not asking for a refund of my entire order. I was asking them to stand behind the portion that arrived in unacceptable condition. Instead, I got a rigid policy response and no meaningful attempt to resolve the problem.
Based on both the condition of part of my order and, especially, how the issue was handled afterward, I would be very hesitant to order from TN Nursery again.
If you do order, inspect absolutely everything immediately. Their 24-hour claim window leaves very little room if a problem becomes apparent after delivery.

We’re sorry you were disappointed, but we do want to clarify why our 24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee exists.
Living bare-root plants can change quickly after delivery depending on temperature, moisture, storage, and handling. That is why we require arrival-condition concerns to be reported within 24 hours, while we can reasonably determine the condition in which the plants were received. A claim submitted several days later falls outside that window.
The 24-hour guarantee is published on our website and agreed to as part of our ordering policies. It is not a policy created after a customer reports a problem, nor is it intended to avoid standing behind our plants.
We understand that you would have preferred an exception, but applying a published guarantee consistently to every customer is not the same as refusing to provide customer service.
We appreciate that you acknowledged other plants in the order arrived in good condition, and we’re sorry this portion of your experience did not meet your expectations.

I purchased the bamboo tree
I purchased the bamboo tree, 2 for 1, a year ago. Instructions said it is bareroot (arrived dry and leafless) and could take time to wake up. I went back to their site and it’s $20 more in 2026 than what I paid ($49). I’m wondering when it’s going to show signs of life. Meanwhile I bought a potted Bambusa banana in a gallon pot with leaves for $39 on Etsy.

Thank you for your review. We understand why you're wondering when you'll see growth, but bare-root bamboo behaves very differently from the leafy, gallon-potted bamboo you're comparing it with.
Bamboo grows and spreads from its underground rhizome system, and new shoots emerge from buds on those rhizomes. The original bare-root material may never look like the potted bamboo you purchased elsewhere while it is establishing.
Bamboo also has a seasonal shooting cycle, with much of its new culm growth occurring during a relatively short period in spring.
If the rhizomes remain viable, watch closely next spring for new shoots emerging from the ground around the original planting area rather than waiting for the original cane to suddenly leaf out.
We hope you'll give it through the next spring growth cycle and update your review when you see what emerges.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root nursery stock, which naturally looks much smaller upon arrival than an established potted plant. Our website explains what bare-root plants look like when shipped and shows customers examples of the actual dormant stock they can expect to receive.
Bare-root plants are also considerably more economical than mature container-grown plants because customers are purchasing the living root system and growing the plant to maturity themselves.
A smaller plant does not mean an unhealthy plant. Please give it time to establish and grow before judging its ultimate quality based solely on its size when received.

When customers participate in our review offer, we upgrade the shipping service with the carrier whenever applicable. The upgrade applies to the carrier service selected when the package is processed; however, once the shipment leaves our nursery, the actual transit time and delivery schedule are controlled by the carrier.

The plants received were in terrible shape…
The plants received were in terrible shape. Some were dried out (Liverwort Hepatica and Lyreleaf Sage), others were moldy and soft (bloodroot), others looked crushed (Cardinal Flower). I did not report the problem right away so I was told nothing could be done for me waiting 3 days after receipt of plants. The plants should have been in pots not bare root this time of year. This is the growing season, plants do not appreciate being out of the soil when they are growing.

Bare-root perennials can look dry, flattened, brown, or dormant after shipping, and their appearance can be very different from established potted plants. Many will focus on establishing their root systems and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.
Our 24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee exists specifically for plants that genuinely arrive rotten, moldy, dead, or damaged. We require those conditions to be reported promptly so we can verify how the plants arrived. You acknowledge that the issue wasn't reported until three days after delivery, which unfortunately falls outside that guarantee.
We understand your disappointment, but shipping bare-root plants during the growing season is intentional and is not, by itself, evidence that the plants were improperly handled or nonviable.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root plants, and many perennial roots are naturally quite small when dormant. Root size varies considerably by species, and a one-inch root can still be viable and establish successfully after planting.
Bare-root perennials can also look brown, dry, or completely inactive when they arrive. Many focus on establishing underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.
If a plant actually arrives dead or damaged, our 24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee is provided specifically for that situation.
Please give the planted roots their normal establishment period before determining they have failed. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when they emerge next spring.

Dead tree delivered in August for "fall" planting
Ordered a tree from TN Nursery that said would arrive for fall shipping. Got the tree the last day of August that had so few roots on it it could not even stay in the soil in the pot. I took a picture and was told it still had green leaves and to plant immediately in 98 degree weather. I was then told I needed to have plant insurance to replace it. I didn't know that applied to a dead tree that was shipped to you

A tree arriving with green living foliage is not a dead tree. Root systems on young nursery stock can also vary considerably in size, and a smaller root system does not establish that the tree was dead when shipped.
When our team advised you to plant it promptly, that was because living bare-root nursery stock should be planted as soon as possible rather than left exposed. Appropriate watering and aftercare are especially important during hot weather.
Our Live Arrival Guarantee covers plants that actually arrive dead or damaged. Plant Protection is separate coverage for problems that occur after planting and establishment.
We understand your concern about the August heat, but the presence of green foliage in the photograph you submitted indicated living plant tissue at the time the concern was reported. For that reason, we could not classify the tree as dead on arrival.

Ordering is very easy
Ordering is very easy. Shipment was quick. I ordered 5 ferns and received 8. I planted them all according to instructions. All but 1 is growing well, but I'm giving the last one plenty of time. I have found that some things need a little extra time. That's not a problem.

Thank you for your review. Since your plants were only planted a little over a month ago, it is still too early to determine that they have failed.
Many of our bare-root perennials spend their first growing season establishing strong root systems underground and may not produce visible top growth until the following spring.
Please leave them planted and continue normal care. We hope you'll be pleasantly surprised when they emerge next spring, and we'd love for you to come back and update your review when they do.

Bait and Switch experience based on Web page pictures
The picture on the web page showed full size mature plants. I ordered 25 to fill in my shade garden. What I received was 25 just sprouted seedlings. I expected more mature plants after spending more than $2 apiece for these plants. The description did not specify the exact plant size but the picture did not depict seedlings but mature plants. This was my first and LAST order. Very disappointed by what I received. 25 plants were sent in a 5x7 padded envelope. Never again.

The photos on our website show what the plants look like at maturity, just as most nursery and garden websites show mature plants so customers can see the eventual foliage, flowers, and landscape appearance. They are not intended to represent the exact size of every plant at the time of shipment.
TN Nursery specializes in bare-root and young nursery stock, which allows customers to purchase plants at substantially lower prices than mature container-grown specimens. You purchased 25 plants for just over $2 each—that pricing is simply not comparable to purchasing 25 mature, established plants from a retail garden center.
We also show and describe how our plants are shipped so customers know what to expect before purchasing. Shipping 25 young plants efficiently in protective packaging is one of the reasons we're able to keep both plant and shipping costs affordable.
Calling this a "bait and switch" suggests we intentionally advertised one product and secretly sent another. That is not what occurred. You received the young plants ordered; the mature photographs demonstrate what those plants can become once established.
We hope you'll give them time to grow before judging their long-term value.

TN Nursery specializes in bare-root and young nursery stock, and our BOGO plants are priced accordingly. Bare-root plants can look surprisingly small when they arrive because customers are receiving the living root or crown that establishes and develops into the mature plant shown on our website.
A small dormant plant is not necessarily a poor-quality or unhealthy plant. Many of our bare-root perennials spend their first growing season establishing underground and may not produce substantial visible growth until the following spring.
We're also sorry to hear you ordered from us "accidentally," but the size and appearance of young bare-root stock should not be compared with mature container plants sold at retail garden centers.
We hope you'll give the plants an opportunity to establish before deciding their quality based solely on their appearance upon arrival.
