About Littlefair's
Back in 2001, Les G. Littlefair began stocking wood stain products in his Darwen based bric-a-brac shop and soon noticed how well the products sold. As a joiner with an eye for perfection, he believed he could create an even better product that could enhance any untreated wood. After months of perfecting a product that was easy to use, environmentally friendly and beautiful to look at, Les began selling his first range. It wasn’t long until the success of his products enabled him to leave the bric-a-brac trade and concentrate on cultivating his own brand.
Based in Blackburn, Littlefair’s are multi award winning manufacturers of water-based wood dyes, varnishes, finishing oils and wax polishes. Customer care couldn't care less
After seeing good reviews online I purchased a bottle of stain in 'light rosewood', which is depicted in all their material close to a pale warm oak colour. I also purchased a bottle of the wood conditioner as recommended as I was staining a softwood bench and table. Unfortunately, after applying to part of the bench it was clear that the colour was nothing like their guide at all and actually almost identical to the colour that they sell as 'very red mahogany'. I contacted their customer care to see if they agreed that this was the wrong colour and they told me that it's the right colour and maybe I should try and buy another bottle in a different shade to mix it to try and make it close to the colour I wanted?? They also tried to fob me off with the colour looking different because it's been applied to 'old wood'? The bench was freshly sanded and polished with a fine grit before applying their wood conditioner and finally their stain. I've asked for a refund which they refused and said I should have bought a tester pot. I'll be doing a chargeback with my bank as the colour they have sent is not the colour I bought, or it is grossly misrepresented on their website.

From the photos you shared, we can confirm the colour supplied is Light Rosewood, and we’ve also tested the batch your order came from to double-check. Everything is correct and consistent with our standard.
One of the challenges with wood stains is that it’s impossible to guarantee an exact match to what you see on a screen. Colours can appear very differently depending on screen brightness, resolution, and settings. For example, on some screens Light Rosewood can look very similar to Antique Stripped Pine, whereas on others (including ours) the red tones in Light Rosewood are clearly visible.
There are also a couple of other important factors that affect the final result:
1. The type of wood being used
2. The application method
3. Whether additional products are used – in your case, the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, which isn’t used in the website imagery and can alter how the colour appears
Because of all of this, we do recommend trying a tester pot first before committing to a larger size, and we state this clearly on our product listings. We offer tester pots for all of our wood stains, as well as the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, specifically to help avoid situations like this.
With regards to your refund request, as the product supplied was correct and the tester pot guidance wasn’t followed, we had to adhere to our returns policy and decline this. That said, we didn’t want to leave you stuck, so we offered a solution along with a discount code to help you achieve a result closer to what you were looking for.
Customer service is extremely important to us, as you’ll see from the vast majority of our reviews, and we always aim to be as fair and helpful as possible in situations like this.
