Too much discrepancy in board widths
Board widths varied too much to get a good finish on the deck

Hi Chris, thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. Southgate Timber are the UK's largest seller of hardwood decking, particularly Yellow Balau Decking. We take great care to describe our products accurately online. If customers need assistance with fitting, we have online videos and we offer support. You are correct that the widths can vary in YB and all hardwood decking; this is standard and can be overcome by matching boards of similar width if you are butting up the ends.
Hardwood decking is generally machined at source and loaded in containers for shipment to the UK. Moisture content from board to board can vary, and therefore movement before fitting can result in board width variations.
We appreciate your business and hope to deal with you again in the future
Best regards

Bad quality timber decking
I bought from Southgate timber a significant amount of wood decking. They seem professional and trustworthy with the process but the quality of the wood timber was disastrous. So many planks came bent, curved and once fitted, few broke on the edge.
After numerous back and forth with the director of the company, he blamed it on the moisture... i still cant figure out how can wood decking in London can avoid moisture:((. His email reads: 'The boards have cupped because of in-balance of moisture'. He has therefore completely dismissed my complain, refused to pick up the faulty boards and any kind of solution.
So if you buy from them, pray that all goes well as they wont be there if you have a problem. They just dismiss you even if you spend thousand with them.
and yes they will say in the reply they offered few new boards after 8 emails sent and 3 times pictures that he failed to look at, so not good enough.

Hi Audrey, thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback. Whilst we welcome customer feedback, please allow us to defend our business and give a few facts based on your review.
1. Jatoba decking was supplied 8th May but the complaint was not received till 22nd June
2. The timber was only reported bent after it had all been installed
3. The fitter failed to read the basic instructions for the hidden fixings and had to take up and re-fit the complete deck after speaking with us
4. We have sent around 14 emails trying to assist you to resolve the errors on fitting and the limitations of the deck design having inadequate airflow and drainage under the decking
5. There is some cupping of the Jatoba boards caused by damp under the decking due to the fitting/deck design. This is not a timber defect; it is a design limitation
6. Lengthy emails were sent to assist your fitter to get this right
7. Three split boards from 260pieces ordered were offered FOC replacement despite this request 4 months after the delivery
8. We sell circa 20,000 lineal metres of Jatoba 21 x 145mm smooth hidden fix per calendar year. We have not received complaints of any noticeable amount from other customer except the occasional sub-standard board or transit damage which we promptly resolve for customers when reported in a timely manner.
9. We have responded to all communication within a swift timeframe typically same working day.
Regrettably we were unable to reach an amical solution with yourself but on receiving the threat of a negative review there was little more we could do to help further. Had the fitter just read the instructions and the deck not been at ground level (allowing for drainage and air flow) we believe all the of issues would have not occurred. We do take great pride in our service and customer support as is shown overwhelmingly in our customer feedback. Only about 3% of our customers take the time to review our business so as you can imagine we have 1000’s of happy customers who have purchased Jatoba and other timber products from us every year.
Sorry we didn’t meet your expectations and that your frustrations with your project have resulted in this negative feedback for us. You explained to my colleague that everything has gone wrong with your house project, we are sad to hear this and hope you get everything resolved to your satisfaction.
Best regards
