Good service, but timber quality was inconsistent
No problems with Southgate Timber as a company. Staff were helpful, delivery was quick and on time, and the driver was friendly.
My only disappointment was the quality and consistency of some of the Yellow Balau. I ordered more than the recommended 10% extra but still came close to running short because of width variations, poor machining and a few boards that were difficult or impossible to use. One long board was badly twisted along its full length, and some of the shorter boards were noticeably poorer quality than the longer ones.
To be fair, I managed to work around the problems and didn’t contact Southgate Timber to complain, so they weren’t given the opportunity to replace anything, but cutting up a fall 4.8m unusable length of yellow balau did make my wallet cry a little.
I would buy from them again because the service itself was good, but for the price of hardwood decking I would have expected more consistent quality control.

Hi Cerebel, Thank you for your recent purchase and for leaving a review.
We take great care to describe our products accurately online and give detailed information explaining width variation and expected defects. From your feedback, this matches what can happen on occasional boards of imported Yellow Balau decking. We are the market leaders in volumes of stock of this specie and have 25 years plus of successful sales to clients, whether trade or retail. On rare occasions, some boards fall below expected standards; in this case, if customers contact us with images, we will resolve swiftly. Our procurement team only source stock from the finest mills, but being a natural product, some allowance for defects is permissible as detailed online. At this time, Yellow Balau is circa £50/m2 + vat which is the lowest budget end for hardwood decking, but it remains the most popular option with UK customers and is still offers considerably better value than alternatives like decent standard composite or natural stone exterior floor coverings.
We appreciate you would use us again and welcome your constructive feedback.
Best regards 😊

Great supplier for timber cladding
Great supplier.
We used them on a number of garden room projects. They are not the cheapest, but they sell good quality timber cladding, and quality matters.
We tried a number of other suppliers before coming to this one, and their timber is more dimensionally stable, cleaner cut, is delivered quickly and comes in a number of sizes, so we can pick the best fitting option.
Definitely recommend.
