Wolfburn is a multi-award-winning whisky distillery on the north coast of mainland Scotland. Building work commenced in the summer of 2012 and Wolfburn was reopened after some 150 years in early 2013. In 1821 William Smith founded a distillery on the outskirts of Thurso and named it Wolfburn after the watercourse it drew from, “burn” being the Scots word for stream or small river. The distillery was constructed from hardy local Caithness flagstone and the remains of its foundations can still be seen today. Smith invested heavily in Wolfburn and it quickly became a significant producer of malt whisky – tax records from the early 19th Century show it being the largest distillery in Caithness. In 1826 its annual production was 28,056 “Total Gallons of Proof Spirt” – roughly 125,000 litres. The new Wolfburn distillery building is just a short walk along the burn from the old site towards the sea. A mixture of ex-bourbon casks and ex-Olorosso sherry butts have been used so far in the maturation of this aromatic, mildly smokey delicious Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Our master craftsmen fashion their whisky the same way it has always been made: by hand, using only the finest ingredients, and without haste. Now available worldwide in over 38 countries.

A small but fine distillery
We visited this small, fine distillery on our trip through Scotland. It was a great experience - unlike the many large distilleries. That's why I decided to order a selection of whiskies there when I got home. I had British access due to my local booking and initially found that the range in the online store differed greatly between the UK and Germany. But now I could also buy everything I wanted from Germany.

Tolle Führung und sehr gute Whiskys
Wir hatten eine Führung nachmittags 14 Uhr gebucht. Charly begrüßte und sehr freundlich und zeigte uns die Distillery. Er spricht sehr gut verständliches Englisch so dass es auch für Menschen mit nicht so guten englischen Sprachkenntnissen einfacher war, alles zu verstehen. Nach der Führung konnten wir die Whiskys verkosten und einige davon sind wirklich sehr gut. Wir haben schon einige Distillery-Führungen in Schottland besucht, diese war eine der besten. Die kleine Und noch junge Distillery hat ihren eigenen Charme. Sehr gern kommen wir wieder.

Wonderful tasting tour
Do not be putt off by the exterior of the destillery. It does not look like anything special at first, but the tour and the tasting itself was one of the best visits we made during our holiday. The whisky itself was not known to us beforehand, but we bought a bottle of each of the five core whiskies after our return to Germany. A must-visit.

Great Guide and lovely distillery
