The Inside Line: Racing the 500cc World Motocross Championship is the critically-acclaimed new book by British former 500 GP racer Rob Andrews. Have you ever wondered what it must have been like to race in the 500cc motocross GPs during their 1980s heyday? 'The Inside Line' tells you. Tracing Rob's journey from complete beginner, through to factory Kawasaki rider, GP contender, and Motocross des Nations team member, The Inside Line goes where no book has gone before: deep into the heart of life as a professional motocross racer. Superbly illustrated with nearly 400 pictures from some of the finest photographers in the industry, it takes the reader on a fascinating odyssey of insight and intrigue. Learn the inner workings of the grand prix motocross world, get answers to long-pondered questions, and discover things you never knew. There are facts that will surprise you, anecdotes that will make you laugh, and honest, never-before-published information. Find out how it felt to race against motocross legends on the world’s most famous circuits. Discover what it was like to race a full-factory 500 for Team Kawasaki. Learn how the riders lived, travelled, trained, and practiced while on the road. And even read how many in the close-knit GP paddock were ripped-off in an elaborate, multi-million-pound financial scam. Seriously. It happened. Join Rob as he guides you - in his own words - through the jubilant highs and occasionally devastating lows of his journey from raw novice all the way to the biggest stage of all: the world motocross championship. And by the end you’ll understand just what it was like - and what it took - to be a grand prix racer.

The definitive guide to 80s motocross

Rob was there. He saw it. He did it. And this is his story about that incredible era of motocross when he raced against the likes of Andre Malherbe, Dave Thorpe, Eric Geboers, Georges Jobe and Hakan Carlqvist. The book is full of fascinating insights about the racers, the tracks and the machinery. As someone who followed the international GPs mostly through the weeklies and the monthly mags I found myself taking a step back in time to my teenage years when all these guys (including Rob) were my heroes. From Brou to Sittendorf, from Carlsbad to Gaildorf, Rob even takes us back to Namur to walk the track. There’s plenty of text to immerse yourself in but the photography is outstanding as well. What I really love about the book is that you can read it from cover to cover, and you will, but because it is broken down into well-planned and very manageable chapters, you will pick it up and re-read a specific chunk of it again (and again). I can’t recommend it enough.

Must have

As a former organiser of the Luxemburg 500cc GP and regular visitor of the Namur GP, it's even more interesting having the story told from the riders view.
It provides you a unique look behind the scenes.
You must have this book in your library !

An Excellent Recount Of A Classic Era Of Racing

From beginning to end, Rob Andrews journey through the GP Motocross wars is a fascinating tale. His unique approach to outlining each subject and era he was going to cover was a pleasant surprise. This well thought out chronology of a hard working and dedicated competitor who dueled with some of the finest riders to ever straddle a motorcycle is a fantastic read. Even if you're only a casual fan, Andrews easy going narrative will hold your attention.

I've been a student of the sport of…

I've been a student of the sport of Motocross since I saw Ake Jonsson in 1972(I believe) on Wide World of Sports in the United States 500cc Gran Prix of Motocross at Carlsbad, California on Television.I was hooked, the Athletes were a combination of Marathon Athletes, toughness of American Football players, but with the fine thinking skills of a Formula 1 racer,it was perfect, the perfect sport for me.Rob Andrews fit very well into this mold and he could ride the 500 2-strokes,only a few in the World could push one of these machines to the limit,Rob Andrews was one of them.Rob Andrews takes you on his journey, through his career,to the different countries and this fine book is loaded with amazing photos, it's almost like you're there because it literally took a huge portion of his life to accumulate this many photos and for Rob Andrews to share all this for the small price of the book is very generous,I haven't seen another book like it yet.I appreciate Rob Andrews sharing his experience racing for the ultimate prize in Motocross, the 500cc World Motocross Championship on the big bikes on the real tracks,I hope you enjoy Rob Andrews masterpiece as much as do;I am sure you will, thanks Rob!

Rob's book is incredible and will make you an insomniac!

I purchased Rob's book and quickly thumbed through it just to see all of the quality pictures. I was so impressed by those that I thought they nearly justified the cost of the book! Once I started reading it, it was difficult to put it down. Rob's insight regarding what it was like to compete at the highest level of motocross makes one truly understand just how much commitment and sacrifice it takes for the racer, their support team, and their family. In addition, traveling between all of the European countries during that time presented so many logistical challenges that we would not even have to consider here in the U.S. That in itself is just one more factor that added to the stress of what it was like in Rob's life as a Grand Prix motocross racer. It was certainly that way for many other racers and his stories through the book clearly express what he and his team and family encountered along his decade long journey. Those of us who have followed the sport all know of the top names across the years (Aberg, Hallman, Weil, Robert, DeCoster, Mikola, Lackey, Carlquist, etc.) and they have been featured in many race documentaries but I believe that Rob's book is so well written that it would translate very well to a movie. It would be very interesting for a movie producer to highlight the sport through the eyes of rider's like Rob Andrews.
I would highly recommend the book to anyone, not just those who have had an interest in motocross.

Rob's Inside Line

Rob's book was a pleasure to read. I was fortunate to be stationed in Germany with the US Air Force from 1985 - 87. During this time I was able to go to several World Championship MX GPs. This book brought me back to those races and all the great memories I had of them. I love his personal experiences during these times. The Namur section was my favorite as I was there in 85 and 86. My favorite race of all time was Namur 85. Thanks for putting out a book of the best time in the MX World Championships. The detailed insights to that great time in MX history kept me glued to the pages. Thanks Rob and best of luck in the future.

As a former MX'er

As a former MX'er, who dreamt of racing the GP's some day, this was a special book. His struggles to get to the top of his career, matched many of us racers. Totally relate to all the travels and stories. The pictures are so great as well. Any Motocross fan needs this book. I've read my copy 3 times. I'm due for a 4th read. Thanks Rob, love the book!!

Absolutely loved this book

For me the eighties is the greatest period in motocross not only here in europe but also in America too. It was such an exciting time with bikes evolving so quickly and legendary riders riding exotic true works bikes in the best looking and coolest gear. Being one of those riders Rob caputures that era perfectly with behind the scenes back stories and photographs that allow us into that very precious and important time of moto history.
Rob also personaly signed the book and added a small inscription in the first couple of pages which I felt was a really cool touch and I really appreciated. Thank you Rob.
