I have used the NHS credit union for almost 10years now and they have always been extremely helpful, understanding and professional. The service is impeccable and the systems used are quick and easy.
Mixed feelings….
I suppose it’s been a bit of a mixed experience for me.
Decided to apply for a consolidation loan to streamline our outgoings. This is my first time applying for a loan through the CU.
Firstly, I appreciate that applying for something like this, they need to ask for access to bank accounts, statements etc but I have to say I’ve never experienced anything like it. Felt like I was being strip searched! Think the only thing I wasn’t asked for was what colour my underwear was.
What didn’t help was everything being requested via the NIVO app. Yes it was helpful to upload the documents but communicating that way just did not work for me and caused so much stress and anxiety. I sent majority of statements in PDF format but had a few issues trying to get 1 or 2 of them from my banking apps so sent screenshots for these ones and informed them that my app wouldn’t allow me to download a PDF so thought I’d better sending something. The tone in some of the texts were quite abrupt and made me feel as though I was deliberately avoiding sending PDFs despite me telling them repeatedly that my banking apps weren’t giving me the option to download these and I was told that if I didn’t provide these by 9am the next morning my application would be cancelled…again all via an app and no phone call to discuss.
Anyway, after getting really upset by it all, I ended up phoning and spoke to a lovely member of the team who explained why they needed PDFs (as screenshots can be manipulated - which I already knew but again, there wasn’t an option to download) and that normally you need to log in to online banking on a desktop to get these which I hadn’t even thought of. Had someone communicated this earlier this would have saved the stress and upset of feeling like I was being accused of deliberately withholding documents. One simple line at the start of the process, ‘we need PDFs, you will probably need to log in to your online banking as banking apps may not provide this option’. Stress averted!
Anyway, after speaking to her on the phone and managing to get everything via desktop login, I was able to start from scratch and resent every single piece of info I had already sent but in pdf format.
By this point, I was so stressed and just ready to cancel the whole application but hallelujah, what I sent was fine and we could move on but I did make it clear that communicating via the app was adding to the stress.
Roll on to the application being reviewed and Natalie contacting me via NIVO. She had obviously read the previous messages so before starting asked if I was happy to communicate via the app which I appreciated to have been given the option. She was excellent, kept me informed at every stage, asked relevant questions and responded very quickly so I wasn’t hanging on for a day at a time waiting on a reply like I had been in the previous stage….. Loan approved.
All in all a mixed bag of feelings about this experience. The person on the phone when I called and Natalie were both excellent in communicating well and clear on what was needed but the use of the app needs to be reviewed or at least the people communicating behind it. Given this is an NHS credit union and the key aspect of any role in the NHS is clear, concise and compassionate communication, I think there’s definitely room for improvement.

The NHS CU have always been there to help when I’ve needed it despite my poor credit score. The application process takes slightly longer than other loan firms but they are a responsible lender and trustworthy. The rates are also sensible. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
