I'd heard of The Book Guild and its reliability from some of its authors years before I submitted my own book, and I was not disappointed. Coming from a self-publishing background, this was my first time using a hybrid publisher, a new experience to say the least. They took a huge weight off my shoulders, while being friendly, insightful, and transparent in their communications, which typically occurred at each key milestone of the publishing process. The book came out lovely, and I got a fair amount of support in terms of publicity and marketing. Overall, I'd happily work with The Book Guild again.

There are only minor things authors should look out for. Firstly, be prepared to check your manuscript again after it's returned at various stages, and take your time with it.

Secondly, do as much of your own marketing, publicity, research, etc. as possible, including designing and printing your own merch, like flyers and stickers, because The Book Guild rates are on the high end. I was surprised by a free batch of bookmarks, but anything more would have cost extra.

Finally, don't hesitate to reach out to your assigned contacts for updates and clarifications, as your contract and other provided documents don't include answers to all questions you might have.

The team at the Book Guild made the whole process of bringing Graham and the Flitchcombe Murders into print an enjoyable one from start to finish. It's a really professional operation, well honed and efficient, but I always felt I was dealing with people who care about books and doing the best for their authors. There is real expertise on hand and I was thoughtfully guided at every stage. The typesetting was superb, the copy editing meticulous and practical, and the production process went smoothly. The result has been a volume that has already been praised as an example of book production. I couldn't have asked for better.

Book Guild are very good to work with, keeping the author well-informed at all stages of the publishing process. I found the staff I dealt with to be very receptive to my own ideas and suggestions - even though, naturally, they have far more expertise in design, typesetting and publicity than I do - and quick to respond to my naive questions. The finished product looks superb and really stands out in the window of my local branch of Waterstones. What more could a first-time novelist ask for?

All the people at the Book Guild were great at their various responsibilities. As mine is a published book rather than self-published, I was expecting a little more 'editing' of the MS as opposed to simply proof-reading it. Some errors (later corrected by the author) were inadvertently introduced, e.g, the names of the London theatres 'Lyric' and 'Comedy' were changed to 'lyric' and 'comedy' - words not names. However, the overall process, which is still going on, has been a great pleasure and a chance to work with some expert and charming publishers.

I can only echo what 99.9% of reviews have said, is that I have found The Book Guild excellent in every respect. Publishing a book is a daunting experience - if very exciting - but it is not an exaggeration to say The Book Guild has cherished me at every step of the way. They are consummate professionals who have produced my novel 'The Villa Matisse' to such a high standard I am beyond delighted. If you are in any doubt about approaching The Book Guild with your work, don't be. They are top of the league when it comes to independent publishing.

The Book Guild offers either a traditional publishing contract, a partnership (share of costs with author) deal, or self-publishing by Troubador.
My experience with the Book Guild has been positive throughout. From Rosie to Carolina to Sophie, all have been thorough and professional. For me, the excellent marketing in particular raises them above and beyond my experiences with several other indie publishers in the past.

The Book Guild were excellent in delivering a bulk order to my school in readiness for Melania Giofre's author visit. Melania herself was excellent with the children and they loved meeting her and having their book signed by her.

I was really impressed by the support and expertise The Book Guild has shown. I was reticent about using a shared contract, but I am glad I did. The book looks amazing, and I am hoping that it will do well.

In 2012 I started to write a novel to explore the things that worried me as an academic - and worried many of my clients, friends and colleagues. Like: how easy it is for people to follow bad people and bad ideas. How easy it is for people to be manipulated. How we are ignoring the (many) existential catastrophes facing the monoculture of humanity. Our vulnerability and our susceptibility to fear.
Today, in 2026. I am a novelist with three books published as E book and paperback with one more to be published this year.

With The Book Guild there are many benefits - your hand is held. Professional editors, designers, publicists, marketing, distribution help - a book is a team effort. But the main benefit must be that you will publish a good looking book, it will get into some bookshops as well as Amazon.
And, finally, you the author, have a great deal of control. That is worth a lot.

For first time authors searching for a reputable, experienced, and approachable publishing company can be quite daunting. I was fortunate to discover the Book Guild listed in the Writers’ & Artists’ Yearbook. Ever since that eventful day when my submitted manuscript was accepted by the Book Guild, I have been impressed by their professionalism, dedication, friendliness and attention to authors’ requirements while keeping you fully informed by email of your book’s progress through the production process.
I am a returning author and have published four books with the Book Guild. The paperback books are of the highest quality, beautifully presented with a fantastic book cover design image to be proud of.
The Book Guild offer a website design package. I signed up for a new website which has only recently gone ‘live’. My website, highlighting my children’s books, looks amazing with stunning imagery and easy to navigate pages. I’m really very pleased with it, created by one of their talented web designers. I’m not a techy person and was relieved to find the website allowed me easy access enabling me to add script or pictures when certain pages required updating.

Working with The Book Guild has been such a pleasant experience, since I first contacted them in mid-2025 up until final publication and beyond in early 2026.

I was first unsure about how the dynamic would work, having not worked with a publisher like The Book Guild before, but the acceptance email and working with different key members of each team, has been a breeze. They are quick to respond and I was even able to visit their office in Leicestershire for a face to face meeting.

When I was unsure about the initial cover design, it wasn’t too much trouble to tweak and review until it was perfect (the cover being such an important part of any book).

Without The Book Guild I wouldn’t be where I am now - my first debut novel out in the world and thriving (fingers crossed anyway!). For those who are unsure whether to take the leap, I say - go for it! You have nothing to lose, but a lot to gain.

I have had two experiences of working with The Book Guild. The first was in 2020 ago when my book was published on a partnership deal. The second was in June 2025 when the book was published on a mainstream contract. Whilst both experiences were positive, I noticed a definite shift in the social media interaction. I don't know whether this was due to a change of management or just a more enthusiastic approach to social media but whatever the reason, this greatly enhanced my own experiences of being published by TBG. Five years ago, whilst appreciating being published, I didn't always feel that my book was being promoted as fully as I would have liked. However, this has entirely changed and everything from LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram is commented on, reposted and acknowledged. This makes me feel so much more valued as a writer.
From the initial interaction right through to the production team, the media team and to the warehouse team, everything has been positive.
I also want to stress that, despite my scepticism about the possibility of being published on a mainstream contract, this has actually happened so others should definitely note this! TBG are certainly not a vanity press.
Both of the books look great and both used a photograph that I had provided to build the design around - as was my wish.

My publishing journey with The Book Guild has been a positive experience from the beginning. Everyone involved has been super-helpful, and as keen to achieve the best possible result as I have.

Next month, I will be publishing my sixth book with the Book Guild, six of my now seventeen published volumes. All of the books with the Guild have been 'partnership publishing', sharing the costs between author and publisher, usually 50/50 or 60/40 in the writer's favour. The difference between this and self-publishing is that the writer moves through the three stages of editing, production and marketing with full professional assistance at each stage.
Agents have little or no interest in writers over the age of 40; they want to catch them at the start of their careers. I started putting a publication record together through short stories and poems, including successes in competition. Writing has helped me survive the long illness and death of my partner, and the Book Guild has been highly instrumental in bringing my work to fruition. They are professional, considerate and thorough; they do what it says on their site.

I was kept informed through all stages of the publication process. Any issues that came up were immediately tackled. The people at The Book Guild were so friendly and helpful. I highly recommend working with The Book Guild!
