No longer the best rates
I’m sorry, but Athena came on the scene priding itself on offering the lowest interest rates in the market. And I switched and it was great! However, I’ve found a rate a full percentage point lower, and Athena simply advises that they will not offer a comparable rate.
You were great for a few years Athena! But c’mon, everyone is looking for the lowest interest rates right now, and you should be on board to offer these if other providers are doing so. So, looks like it’s time to move again…

We don’t rate match as we offer our best rates upfront to all our customers, existing and new. As we’ve mentioned before, to determine which lender will be on your side in the long run, it’s important to look beyond the intro rate.
Yes, there are more competitive rates being advertised right now. And that’s because, elsewhere, that shiny new customer rate you join on doesn't last long. It quickly loses its shine as the lender passes on higher rate hikes to you once you're an existing customer, in order to reserve lower rates just for new customers. It’s a super common tactic to get new customers in the door and over time (sometimes as short as 3-6 months) they’ll creep up your rate as they think it’s unlikely you’ll go through the hassle of switching again, or even worse will be trapped with them because you’re not actually able to refinance.
From the very start, we ditched the loyalty tax (and we’re the first Aussie lender to do so!), because we believe it’s totally unfair to penalise your loyal customers. As an Athenian, you would know that existing customers will always get the same rate as new customers on like-for-like variable loans.
We intentionally built a home loan with features that help you pay down your home loan faster. This include AcceleRATES, the more you pay down the more we’ll lower your rate automatically. And we charge ZERO fees, we don’t believe in charging fees for simply being a customer.
Make sure when you’re comparing lenders in the market, you look at which lender will have your back in the long run (not just the start!).

Should have done this years ago!
The application process has been extremely smooth, including the loading of documents, ongoing updates & communications via the online portal, SMS messages and calls, and finally, the timely settlement process.
I have already recommended Athena to everyone at work who's interested in moving away from a big bank :)

Rates still higher than most lenders
Hi Athena,
Just enquiring if your interest rates will be slashed any time soon. On todays interest rate Feb 23 it says 5.24% for variable. All four major banks plus many more lenders online all have rates in the mid to late 4% for variable home loans.
If your lender is able to advise if they will be competitive in offering a fair go with Australian customers and their home loans to pay them off quicker would be great to see.
Update Sep 2024. I'm glad I left back in October 2022. I have saved over 3000 dollars in interest Athena would of charged me in that time. They would of charged me loyalty tax for staying with them. Instead going with Qudos Bank my home loan late is 5.84 variable today compared to Athena's 6.39 or higher depending on what rate tier your on. Would highly recommend swapping away from lenders that don't look after customers best interest.

We give our best rates upfront to all our customers and never raise rates unnecessarily. But we’ve always said to look beyond the intro rate to determine which lender won’t go behind your back. We launched with a mission to shake things up by giving Aussies a fair go and actually helping them pay down their home loan quicker.

That’s why with our automatic rate match, existing customers will always get the same rate as new customers on like-for-like variable loans. It’s common practice for lenders to lure you in with shiny low rate, and then once you’re through the door (sometimes in as little as 3-6 months 🤯), they’ll sneakily creep your rate up well beyond what you joined on – and more importantly, way higher than what they’re offering to new customers. Unlike big banks, we’re not in the business of screwing you over.

Very happy I chose Athena
Before choosing an investor loan I did a lot of research to find the best loan and I found Athena had amongst the lowest interest rate and definitely the best features and low/no fees which sealed the deal for me. Customer service was also really friendly, professional and proactive, which made the whole experience much easier.

So simple and easy to switch
The process of transferring from my exisiting bank loan to Athena was an absolute breeze. I could complete most of it through an app or online. If I had any trouble with anything the team at Athena made it easy to contact them and your call would be returned very shortly after. I would definately recommend Athena home loans.

Android app is "not available for any of your devices" and logging in seems to require 1 - 3 SMS PIN codes (depending on the day), but otherwise great to deal with.

Quick and easy
With my old rate at 7% I thought it was time for a change and to get a better lower rate and Athena Homeloans was the provider we chose to go with . The process was easy and able to do online they where very helpful at every stage of the application and we are finally able to save money and pay down our home loan faster than what we previously thought.
I highly recommend them as they give you more options as to how you manage your home loan.
