Avoid avoid - It’s a scam…
I cancelled in January they have continued to take money for March, August and September. Despite opening 2 tickets on their online system I have simply been asked for a postcode and email saying they cannot locate my account.
I cancelled on 17.01.20. I was told by Harlands no future payments would be taken and they would cancel and talked me through step by step on the phone and gave me the numbers to put in to finally get the cancelled message on the app!
I now find they have continued to take payments as per my bank despite me not having been a member for 8 months.
I will be reporting this to my bank as fraud as I first opened a ticket 11 days ago and have got nowhere. I will report to the financial ombudsman if anymore money is taken from my account unauthorised.
I do not even have xercise4less as a direct debit with my bank, it is not on my direct debit list, therefore proving that this is unauthorised payments being taken as I am not in a contract with them, it must be being taken manually.
Shocking service! Tweeted and they said ‘someone will reply soon’! Useless and scam artists!

If I could have scored 0 I would have. Joined the gym on a rolling monthly subscription. Went on the app to notify cancellation and received an email to say it would be cancelled and no further payments due. Lo and behold they have taken yet another payment. Called the help line on 01444449033 and spoke to someone who advised if I had an email confirmation then they would refund me money and I just had to reply back to the email that they were going to send me...guess what no email sent. Avoid at all costs. I didn't want to cancel my direct debit as I know when they pass onto a debt agency they crank up the prices.

Cancelled membership beginning of September, after paying my DD. Got an email saying everything was fine, membership cancelled, no further payments required. 3 weeks later I'm getting emails saying Harlands have noted I've cancelled my DD and I'm going to incur costs if I don't restart. What a joke I was on the rolling monthly membership where you are meant to be free to cancel at any point. Can't speak to anyone on the telephone at Harlands and they don't reply to emails.

Seems I'm not alone. Had 2 memberships for me and husband for five years, when we moved out of area I tried to cancel both. My cancellation seemed to be no problem, easy form online then 30 day notice. How naive I was. Next payment went out. I was still trying to cancel my husband's, eventually finding out they had misspelled his email, so we couldn't get into his account. Sent email to manager only to get snotty email back that due to data protection, she can't let him know his reference number. After email to head office, finally got the number, but now in lockdown he was unable to cancel. Meanwhile as my account showed as inactive I had cancelled the DD and few days later got email saying that now I owe £36.99. I assumed that perhaps I had cancelled the DD too early and paid the balance. Yes, I'm that stupid. Next day there was message that all payments are suspended till reopening.
Forward to 25th of July, gym opens and suddenly my account is active again. Put in request for my husband's cancellation, got message back with cancellation reference and paid the allegedly last payment in August. Kept checking on the "manage membership" page, which showed the membership inactive and no due date for any more DD.
Then yesterday I check my bank and another £11.99 went out.
So moral of the story is, if you're happy forever paying for nothing, join this gym they will happily take your money. So far between 25th of march and now they charged us £96 for not being to go in. Excellent.
Genuinely awful
I registered my interest in the gym and started the sign up process but never finished it or paid for a membership. I looked at the reviews on here and decided I should probably avoid it. A few days later I get a call about why I hadn't finished signing up, so I said I was no longer interested. Today I looked at my bank account and the gym had been taking money out of my account despite me never agreeing to a membership or confirming any payment.
I called the customer service line and they told me they had no advice apart from contacting head office who would 'get back to me in a few weeks'. Are you joking.
edit: I reported the company for fraud. I'd encourage everyone who had a similar experience to do the same and hopefully they stop stealing people's money.
RUBBISH
Despite filling out the cancellation form online, the company is still taking money via DD which I have had to cancel. No response via email etc. The app is outdated and not as good as other gyms I have used. Procedure to get into the gym is poor and not regularly checked .. anyone can walk in and out.
Still charging DD after cancellation
Cancelled my membership validly in March by giving 30 days notice. I’m way outside the original 12 month contract. It’s now September and they are still taking the direct debit from my account. No response from the company at all
Ignored Cancellation Requests
Submitted requests to cancel my membership, received automated replies stating no more money would be taken. They have since taken 2 additional payments, have not replied to emails for 7 weeks and will not answer phone calls. Avoid using this gym.
Scammers! Avoid!
After months of being shut due to corona they charged me for membership suddenly without any warning. They won't answer any calls and guy at the gym promised someone would contact me but they never did. I guess the new management just wants to scam and use the customers. Terrible service. You lost 3 customers. I reported you to fraud dept at my bank.
Awful Gym
this gym does not even deserve a 1 star. I joined in 2015, and after 12 months of the contract in 2016, I requested a member of staff to cancel my membership to which the staff informed me that she did cancel it. However, here we are in 2020 and I find out my vulnerable mother has been getting charged for my membership and her own membership. We have not stepped in the gym since 2016 or used the facilities but still got charged.

2 stars for just an area space to train, had this receptionsist or whatever he works there, due to me bringing my family members to join gym and myself to train them this guy comes to me and throws a threat on me for tellig me i am not allowed to train my own family that come with me unless i train myself and was told by him if i train them by coming there he will be kicking me out from gym and so on he also complained about my old shirt i wear that is from college time........ Not sure what rules i did broke there by bringing my family members to sign for membership or for myself attending there and train them as they coming cuz of me they know nothing about gym so helping them is a crime in there i believe....... Equipment in gym never fixes receptionist alwags busy on their own fun time chatting or playing on phones and so on comes throw a threat if i help somone ill be kicked out from gym and even told him is my damn family members so he was like giving me warning...... I am looking forwards contacting main manager for this complain.....BE CAREFULL WHEN YOU JOIN THIS CHEAP SO SAID GYM

Awful, continue to take money even though I cancelled. They were quick to cancel my use of services however still want to take my money. Avoid!!!

BE CAREFUL. Unathorised use of bank details again and again. After cancelling my membership back in 2019 I suddenly got a pending transaction August 2020 from xercise4less. They have done this to me before and make it very difficult to access your account and information. I am considering changing my account number to get away from them. There is no apology and they do not keep you updated if money is still going out. Absolute SCAM.
Abysmal customer service
The customer service side of this gym is nothing short of abysmal. Having been training here before the pandemic, I cancelled well before the lockdown (early March) in anticipation of what was to come. Despite freezing my account, they were/are incapable of closing my account, despite it being over four months ago, having just taken payment for this month.
The gym are impossible to contact, they don't respond to emails, and calls to the gym reception are completely ignored. I fully expect them to reimburse me for what they have charged after I left the gym, and to finally cancel my membership. However, I am not that confident in their ability to do so.
When I start going back to the gym, it definitely won't be with them, and I will be advising all my friends and colleagues against joining this establishment too.

Contacted many times before the gym re opened to cancel membership with no response, only for them to take a payment again a day after it opened!
Trying to find info of where to send my concerns to only to be going around in circles and taken to the same useless FAQ page. Messaged for my membership number three times and received a generic automated response without providing the number or addressing what was in the correspondence.
Making a complaint is impossible, claim complaints need to be by email to your registered gym, but no email address supplied, pathetic.
It will be easier to cancel my card to stop them taking payments from it, which I intend to do.
I am still looking ways to make a complaint and to get the money back for a service I could not use as they were closed!

I couldn't agree less with the previous reviewer that the communication is very poor. I was at the Benton site on Saturday to make an enquiry about the operations with plan to join on Monday. Getting to the gym on Monday, I met a staff who described herself as Sophie. Apparently she claimed she was a manager on duty. She told me her information is the only right one; the one her previous colleague gave and the website wasn't as accurate as hers. Basically the customer service was so appalling that I made every attempt to explain why her actions might not in the best interest of her company. Unfortunately, it seems she was happy to be right than to make money for her employers. I am not quite surprised that they will soon be taken over by another rival company any moment from now. I have definitely decided not to patronise them as it seems they aren't well motivated to deliver basic customer service. They do not worth the stress.
Zero communication
I joined just before lockdown & obviously my account was frozen throughout. Since I am unexpectedly moving (have now moved) 25 miles away I have been trying over a week to cancel. First with their online portal, which didn’t work, then through the Harlands help line, who told me they had no record of my details on their system, then my in store branch (Mansfield Woodhouse). At this point I spoke to a woman who told me that I’d taken all the right steps and that, looking at my records, she could see that I should be able to cancel. She told me that she would contact head office on my behalf and get back to me in a few days. After a few days and with no response, I emailed the company and got a standard email back with content that clearly indicated they hadn’t even read my email. A week after speaking with the woman in branch, still with no response, I rang back and spoke to another woman who told me that actually I can’t cancel, despite moving, because there is an Xercise4Less gym in my new city, and that they can’t actually contact head office either. Pointed out that this was at odds with everything I’d been told by the company prior to that point & asked if that meant people were just lying? She said she didn’t understand. Didn’t even offer to help me switch gyms to the new one that is apparently in my city. Absolute joke of a company. No wonder there was an exposé on them.
Disappointed with the freezing acc…
I am disappointed with the freezing membership system that they have. They charged me even though I have received confirmation from them saying that my account was freezed. They didn't give me an option to cancel any earlier because they're website wasn't working at all until they have reopened.
I am still trying to sort this out with them because it is unacceptable.
So far terrible experience
So far terrible experience. While gym was shut down they took all the options to freeze or leave out of their websites and stopped any customer services over the phone. 3 days before opening they gave a chance to freeze the account which me and my wife did due to personal circumstances. We received a confirmation saying that accounts were froze with immediate effect and advise asking not to cancel our direct debit. We didn't and three days later the payment was taking out anyway. Now they playing it as we were supposed to let them know 14 days earlier although it wasn't even an option. We will go with this further and see how it turns out. They took advantage of the situation to scam people that's what it looks like.
Cancelling your account is a nightmare
Cancelling your account is a nightmare! The gym reopened on the 25th but cancellation portal didn't open until the 27th. Then they have the 30 day cancel policy and the cheek to take another payment!
All other gyms post Covid have had a immediate cancel and no more payments policy ( even premium places like Orangetheory Fitness)
I know they have been bought by JD gyms and hope that the admin side of things will now be better. Gladly however, I won't be around to find out.
Plenty of other gyms out there so you don't need to go here.
