Good hair academy, free haircuts...errr, good professionals. Some are already better than barbers operating in the high-street. What's not to like?

On this particular moody rain-sodden day I was greeted by pretty animated “Gamine” academy student Becca - whose breezy charm and intelligent chatter relaxed me immediately. Excellent hair management matched by even more excellent banter followed. Becca’s ultimate aim was to become a barber. Whilst Dickensian scenes of grey-whiskered Victorian men being razed in dimly lit parlours filled my curious mind, Becca’s determination to forge a 21st century take on a traditionally male-dominated industry impressed me, as it transpired she had already suffered a degree of prejudice as a would-be girl barber in a mans world.

Within an hour and a half my white roots were skilfully disguised and a shampoo and careful blow dry half an hour more ensured glossy shining tresses. All under the watchful eye of calm conscientious tutor Michaela, whose affable and caring attitude commanded real respect from her students.

I’ve been around the “hair modelling” block over the years but apart from the Everest-like climb up three flights of stairs I can’t fault the shoreditch academy.The teacher/student ratio is fantastic with very small groups of students (sometimes as low as one to one) learning at optimum level from very experienced caring tutors. Every student from Donna to Becca has been incredibly attentive, and the tutors all gracious, patient and helpful. The admin staff are highly efficient and professional and the lovely Isabella and her fellow workers do everything they can to run the place like a well-oiled machine. Reminders the day before. Confirmations on the morning. Skin/Allergy checks updated to the minute and freebies if they need you at short notice.

But it’s the fun feel good factor, while you are being prepared to look good for the outside world, that is what sets this place apart. It’s like they’re on the happy pills. From Becca’s banter to curious facts you never knew about Dr Feelgood from bubbly witty unnamed tutors from Leigh-On-Sea, this place is a find, and all efforts are made across the board to make the whole experience pleasant and memorable. Biggest bonus -you leave feeling like you’ve had a high end hair makeover without burning even a tiny hole in your purse. Highly recommended.

I had a very pleasant experience last week when I had a colour done. The student was Gabriela and her tutor was Andi. All in all I thought they were very professional. The end result was a lovely job. I would definitely go again.

I went there as model for free Haircut. What can I say? Perfect, amazing...there was a student that was practising and a teacher supervisor. The haircut last about an hour...the student, first of all, asks you which type of haircut do you prefer and then, let's start!!!
