Balkans beyond the beaten paths
What a wonderful 12 day journey through the Balkans
The trip was beautifully curated and we chose it as we liked itinerary.
All our hotels were good. Some were located in the heart of the town, while others were easy to navigate from and also the operators were helpful with any pickups required.
The hotel in Dubrovnik was superb
First thanks to Diona and Ajla for replying to all our questions on email and WhatsApp.
Big thanks and a huge shoutout toTarik Colo, our guide for 12 days
Tarik’s energy, smile ,patience, knowledge made the trip very informative. Tarik was kind and considerate and kept in mind the whole group’s requirements and requests.
Thanks to Nermin for navigating all the narrow mountain roads safely
Travelling in these countries and listening to their recent histories, seeing towns and villages off the normal touristy paths was a very wonderful experience.
Date of experience: September 2026
The Balkans!
Just finished a wonderful trip through the Balkans with a company called “Funky tours”; visited Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania over a course of 16 nights/15 days. Total of 12 people in the group, 6 of whom stayed for the entire length of the trip while the others joined a little later and left earlier.
We ended up visiting some beautiful sites in all 5 countries, which I had no idea even existed, like the Bled lake, Plitvice lakes and the Postojna cave in Slovenia, the gorgeous waterfront in Split, Croatia, the beautiful old city in Dubrovnik. Also, the incredible Adriatic coastline and magnificent scenery in Perast, Montenegro; the beautiful UNESCO heritage site in Berat and the wonderful city of Tirana, Albania. And last, but not the least, the city of Sarajevo and its surroundings, the picturesque town of Konjic on the way to the old city of Mostar.
The trip though rather hectic, was well organized and we saw a lot of places. Our tour leader Robert was a wonderful, friendly and extremely knowledgeable individual who knew pretty much everything about everything in the Balkans and answered almost every question that was asked over a 15 day period in great detail. If there was a department of Balkan tourism at a local university, he probably would be Professor and Chairman! We traveled in a spacious, air conditioned bus driven by a very friendly, expert driver named Dado, who managed to squeeze out of super tight spots on extremely narrow roads with hardly an inch to spare, without the slightest damage to the bus.
A few minor negatives: some of the drives were rather long, but I suppose one has to make an effort to see something spectacular, and the destination makes the journey worthwhile. I would rather the daily trips start at 9 in the morning instead of 7:30 or 8; pit stops should be scheduled approximately every two hours instead of someone having to ask embarrassingly to please stop because they are getting very uncomfortable.
The hotels were decent, some well situated in the center of the city; resort in Dubrovnik had phenomenal views.
All in all, it was an excellent trip, worth the price.

Funky Tours’ 12-Day Zagreb to Kotor Tour
My husband and I took Funky Tours’ 12-Day Zagreb to Kotor Tour in September 2026, and our experience was excellent.
Funky Tours handled the transportation, hotels, admissions, and some group meals, while our guide, Robert, stayed with our 10-member group throughout the trip. He was knowledgeable, personable, and entertaining, and he used the driving time to explain the history and everyday life of the Balkans. Our driver, Dado, also did an excellent job navigating mountain roads and border crossings.
The organization during the trip was excellent. Everything went as planned, the pace was comfortable without feeling slow, and the 4-star hotels were in good locations with excellent breakfasts. We also appreciated having free time in the cities and one completely free day.
One thing worth knowing before booking is that Funky Tours doesn’t provide as much big-company paperwork ahead of time as I was accustomed to. However, this turned out not to be a problem at all. They are a small team of real people working in their Sarajevo office, and communication during the trip was excellent. We used email and WhatsApp to communicate.
The tour involved a fair amount of walking—about 4–5 miles a day, including some uneven paths and plenty of stairs.
We felt very safe throughout the trip and felt that we received good value for the cost. We would definitely travel with Funky Tours again.
Amazing experience with Funky Tours
I am so happy I booked with Funky Tours! The Jewels of Bosnia tour exceeded my expectations. I feel like I learned, saw, and experienced more than I could’ve asked for.
All communication with Amela and Ajla in the office was prompt and courteous. I was also very pleased with the guides. They were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They made sure everyone in the group was doing well and answered all questions that we had. It felt like having a friend show you around. I also appreciated the frankness of each tour guide. They were willing to discuss difficult topics and respectfully shared their opinions and experiences, which really added to the tour. I truly enjoyed every day of the tour and I will absolutely book with Funky Tours for my next trip to the Balkans.
SO GOOD
SO GOOD! Funky Tours made our short trip to Sarajevo and Mostar so memorable, and I came away with so much insight into Bosnia's culture, history and vibe. Our guide - Samir - was an incredible fount of knowledge, and handled tricky questions about the country's politics and history with ease and honesty. He also has a great sene of dry humour! He was patient and cool-headed with grumpy tour-members, random storms, and road detours alike! Very much felt we were in safe hands all the way. We also never felt rushed between stops - we were a small group and so were able to set a pace that suited us. Highly, highly recommend both the half-day Siege tour, and the 1 day Four Cities tour down to Mostar (which we used as a transfer on to Croatia).
Funky Tours has a very friendly, helpful and efficient office staff too - responsive to last-minute scheduling, ready with useful suggestions, and they seem like a tight-knit and friendly organisation. Office is easy to find, on the edge of Old Town.
We booked about 7-10 days in advance, with no issues. I reckon you could probably pop in on the day and they would hook you up with something fun for the next day, but they also take bookings far in advance for those who are more organised than me :D
An excellent Balkan tour
My wife and I recently returned from Funky Tours Best of the Balkans tour. It was a fascinating couple of weeks and overall an informative and enjoyable experience.
For most of the tour, our group consisted of nine well traveled people, ranging in age from mid-30s to early 70s. All of us were from either the US or Australia and the tour was conducted in English. A perk was that we were all prompt to show up at the appointed times and generally got along very well. Given the amount of time spent in a small bus and the general pace of the tour, that helped make it all work well. This tour is not a good replacement for a cruise. The hotels were all fine, in good neighborhoods and with good breakfasts, but there was little downtime, considerable walking required, and some very long days of travel. Aside from our first night in Ljubljana where we had booked an extra night, we never stayed at a hotel for more than two nights.
Communication with the Funky Tours office was excellent and the cost of the trip was very reasonable given the number of places we visited. Funky Tours provided airport transfers on both ends of the trip and paid entrance fees into the places we visited, with a couple of optional exceptions. The tour included a nice mix of city walking tours, national parks, site seeing and history lessons. All of the tour guides were excellent.
The best highlights of the trip include the Postojna Cave and Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia, Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, many beautiful mountain vistas in Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania, and the ancient coastal cities along the Adriatic. We also received several thorough tours in and around Sarajevo, perhaps the most interesting city of the tour. We now have a much better understanding of the very complicated history of this region as well as an appreciation of the natural beauty and cultural attractions. If you want to get a real sense of the region by being immersed among the people who live there, it's hard to imagine a better opportunity.
Smooth Herzegovina Transfer with Excellent Guides
Everything from the start of the booking was seamless. Communication with Ajla was prompt and efficient, which made the entire planning process easy despite multiple back-and-forth emails.
I booked the Dubrovnik to Sarajevo transfer tour via Herzegovina and Mostar with Funky Tours. My guide, Faris, was enthusiastic and positive, with a strong knowledge of history that he shared clearly throughout the day. He also brought a great sense of humour, keeping the experience engaging and enjoyable. We met again the following day for the Sarajevo walking tour. Despite it being a free tour, he was highly professional and ensured the full two-hour itinerary was well covered.
Our driver during the Herzegovina tour, Sadin, handled the roads with confidence and skill, getting us to each destination safely and efficiently.
Well planned and fantastic guide
This tour was a really positive experience, the guide was extremely well prepared, he managed to keep the entire day interesting and answered all of our questions.
If you are interested in understanding what happened in Srebrenica and the historical context behind it I really recommend it.
I would also like to mention that the lunch with the local family was lovely, thank you so much!
WW1 Assassination tour
Professionalism, knowledge and friendliness. Highly recommended!
Thanks a lot
Thanks a lot! It was an amazing experience. Edo, the guide, was very kind with us and a very good storyteller!
We won’t forget what he taught us!
Congratulations for everyone of the group.
Highly raccomended!

Robert in Sarajevo is the BEST
Robert, our guide in old town Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina. So knowledge and passionate about his city, it's contagious. After the tour you'll want to book another tour with Robert of Funky Tours.
Our Croatia Sailing Tour with Funky…
Our Croatia Sailing Tour with Funky Tours was pure magic from start to finish. Skipper Mislav and Host Abi made every day feel like we were sailing with old friends — warm, fun, and incredibly genuine. Their easygoing hospitality and local knowledge made the experience unforgettable.
The itinerary was perfectly balanced, visiting beautiful harbors, charming coastal towns, and breathtaking National Parks. Every meal was a highlight — from delicious onboard meals to amazing dinners in local restaurants along the coast.
We made new friends, laughed constantly, and experienced one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The only downside was that it ended far too soon!
If you’re thinking about sailing Croatia, do it with Funky Tours — you won’t regret it.
An exceptional experience
We did four tours with Funky Tours in Bosnia in September. Private transfers from Dubrovnik to Mostar and from Srajevo to Zagreb via Banja Luka over two days, and two small group day tours from Sarajevo to Srebrenica and Eastern Bosnia/Western Serbia. All the tours took us to beautiful and fascinating places well off the normal tourist itinerary and excellent local drivers and guides provided knowledgeable and empathetic insights into what we were seeing. From the time we started making initial enquiries to follow up after the trip I thought Funky Tours were very efficient, personable and well organised. I woud recommend them highly
Great tour to see and learn about the Balkans
We did the Funky Tours 12-Day Best of Balkans small group tour that visited Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, and Montenegro. The organization of the trip on the part of Funky Tours was wonderful - we visited many beautiful sites while learning about both the more recent and the past history of the region. Our tour guide, Ajla, has a terrific knowledge of the region and gave us great recommendations throughout the trip. It was my first time traveling with a small group tour, and the group got along very well and enjoyed the time together. One interesting thing for us was that some of the people on our tour were on the 16-day version that's also available, so some of the people had started before us and continued on for a few days after us. In terms of timing, the end of September-beginning of October time is a perfect time to visit the Balkans. The weather is still good, but the crowds have started to die down a bit.
We had 4 day boat trip from Tribunz
We had a great 4 day boat trip from Tribunz with Funky Tours which was excellent. The boat was good, the staff brilliant and I would definitely recommend.
Funky Tours Fabulously Fantastic
Funky Tours was easy to communicate and plan our travels with. The professionalism and the friendliness was super before, during sailing and after. Nothing was too much and all information was clear.
The sailing trip had good company, fabulous food, options to relax, swim or explore! Everything with Funky tours was fantastic - Big thanks to Ema!
Our tour was fantastic
Our tour was fantastic, lots of great variety and got to see parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina we wouldn’t have otherwise. Tour guide was very informative and helpful. Would really recommend instead of getting a regular transfer from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik.

My experience on funky Tours
I recently completed a fantastic adventure with Funky Tours, and I can't recommend it enough! We visited three stunning islands, each offering its own unique charm and beauty.
The food throughout the tour was simply fantastic, with each meal providing a delightful taste of local cuisine that exceeded my expectations.
The crew was amazing as well! Their friendliness and attentiveness made the journey even more enjoyable. They ensured that we had everything we needed and shared great insights about each destination.
Overall, my experience with Funky Tours was unforgettable, filled with breathtaking sights, delicious food, and a dedicated crew. If you're looking for an amazing getaway, this tour is the perfect choice!
