Dawes Scenic Crossbar is a electric commuter bicycle
Dawes Scenic Crossbar is a genuinely reliable electric commuter bike. I bought it on sale through Currys and managed to get an excellent deal — unfortunately, the delivery experience wasn’t quite as lucky.
That said, the bike itself is outstanding value for money. It has a sturdy, well-built frame that feels solid and confidence-inspiring on the road, yet it’s still relatively lightweight compared to many of the overpriced “trendy” bikes out there. It strikes a great balance between durability and practicality for everyday commuting.
The electrical components have proven very dependable. It’s powered by a Bafang H300 rear hub motor, which is known for being low-maintenance and smooth in operation. The motor delivers 32Nm of torque — which might not sound huge on paper, but in real-world riding it’s excellent. Power delivery feels natural rather than jerky, and it handles city riding and climbs better than expected. I mostly stick to the first three assist levels (out of five) because they already provide plenty of support without draining the battery too quickly.
The bike uses a Reention EEL Mini 36V 10Ah battery, which is a very common and widely supported format. In real-world use, its performance has been impressive. I ride in very hilly Edinburgh and average 10+ miles per day, yet a single charge comfortably lasts me around five days. That kind of range makes it ideal for commuting without constantly worrying about charging. Because it’s such a standard battery type, it’s also easy to find higher-capacity replacement packs in the same form factor if you ever want to extend the range in the future — a big plus for long-term ownership.
I’ve also made a couple of smart component upgrades that noticeably improved the ride quality without costing a fortune. I replaced the stock tyres with Schwalbe G-One Allround 700 x 40 tyres, which offer much better grip, comfort, and rolling efficiency on mixed surfaces. They smooth out rough roads and light gravel while still feeling fast on tarmac — perfect for urban commuting. After switching tyres, I also noticed an approximate 10–20% improvement in battery efficiency, likely due to lower rolling resistance and a more efficient ride overall.
I also upgraded the original JAK-7 mechanical disc brakes (which weren’t terrible, just fairly basic) to SRAM Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes. The difference in braking performance is huge: stronger stopping power, better modulation, and more consistent performance in wet conditions. Together, these upgrades make the bike feel significantly higher quality overall, and the improvement came from a relatively small additional investment.
Overall, this bike is a practical, dependable commuter with a strong motor system, excellent real-world range, and a solid build — made even better with a couple of well-chosen upgrades. If you want something that works hard every day rather than just looking flashy, this is a great choice.
