Consumer Reports is an independent, nonprofit member organization that works for truth, transparency, and fairness in the marketplace. Consumers Union was chartered on February 6, 1936, at a time when consumers had very few options to gauge the value, quality, or authenticity of goods and services. It was an era of unfettered advertising claims, rapid technological progress, and patchwork regulations. Since then, CR has remained true to its mission, testing and reviewing countless products to make sure they’re safe and worth your money. Through our advocacy, we’ve helped people save billions. And we’ve influenced some of the most critical issues of the marketplace: the dangers of smoking cigarettes and eating toxic foods, predatory practices of credit card companies, safety risks in cars, and more.

I made sure to cancel my subscription after one month but continued to get auto billed. When I called Customer services a few months later they were not helpful. Buyer beware!
Appalling Misinformation
I've lost all respect for CU after finding their mattress ratings strikingly out of touch with reality, I subscribed online hoping for some help buying a mattress but was appalled at the misinformation.
In the ratings chart, with few exceptions CU assigns the same Comfort and Owner Satisfaction rating to all of a manufacturer's products. There's no way to tell if owners found one model to be a star or a dud.
Researching Avocado mattresses, I found tons of horror stories on Trustpilot - items delivered late or not at all, damaged, failure to honor warranty, unresponsive customer service. 85% of ratings were 1* out of 5. Google reviews of our local store were positive about the salespeople, but the 1* reviews reported the same fulfillment, quality and support issues.
Yet CU misleadingly rates Avocado 73/100 in owner satisfaction; only 3 of 175 innerspring mattresses are higher.
CU's chart shows Saatva mattresses do "Resist bounciness." Wrong! In the store, we found their mattresses bouncing uncomfortably when a second person lay down. And review in Wirecutter, which we've always found reliable, repeatedly note Saatva's bounciness (one reviewer said "trampoline").
I don't know where CU gets its information. But it's no longer where I'm getting mine.
Auto Renewal or nothing
Regular junk mail offers, I returned a postcard for a free thing and an issue. Get a bill for the annual subscription they were teasing and tried to pay it. Full intention of taking the subscription. ZERO option for a one year subscription! Must have email address to even get to customer support. Only subscription is forever (auto renewal)
How about you lose my name and address forever!
Consumer Reports Magazine Downhill in a hurry in the last 20 plus years
Was an avid reader decades ago until it went downhill. Review of items not relevant on the West Coast, certain inverter Panasonic Microwaves rated top at multiple categories have not been manufactured for a while and cannot find them even across the country. Car reviews used to be organized in an easy manufacturer-based format, and went back at least 10 years. If you are in the used car market, a review of recent lease return cars is no good to you. You want historical reviews for 5 to 15 year old cars. Now they list them in vehicle categories and make it more of a comparison rather than just pure ratings. Garbage! I signed up for ONE year last year to see if there is any improvement, received multiple teaser rates to renew again which I ignored. They automatically charged my Paypal and said that I had signed up for auto-renew, which cannot be further from the truth. It used to be that Consumer Reports didn't lend its name to advertisers to refer to its ratings. Now they do, and that makes them a commercial magazine. I'm looking at my latest issue and there is not even a date on the cover. Inside it says it is July-Aug 2025. I haven't even had the urge to open the magazine to look. It is blah blah and even more irrelevant blah.
Received the magazine for many years
Received the magazine for many years, for decades. It stopped without notice. Now renewed, they have the worst consumer relations. Just like big corporate that basically doesn't care. Very sad.
RIP OFF COMPANY WITH RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
Today I received a notification from my credit card company indicating that there had been a charge of $39.00 to my card from consumerreports.org. I received NO email notification (It IS possible that it went to spam.) When I called to cancel the account, I was told that I would be refunded $29. I asked why that was when I received NO notification of the upcoming charge. Alexandria told me that I received a letter in the mail, but I did NOT!!!!!!!!! I told her that I received no letter and no email, JUST a notification of the charge on my credit card and I was calling right away to take care of the issue. She said that was basically too bad and when I asked to speak with a manager, she refused to give me one!!!!!! VERY, VERY RUDE customer service!!!! In addition, I received NO NOTIFICATION, YET I have to pay $10!!!!!!!! For what!?!?!?! DONE WITH CONSUMER REPORTS FOR GOOD!!!!!!!!
Poor CR App
Became a recent member. Be careful as digital membership does not provide access to magazines. That is my fault.
However digital access on Android phones is very, very frustrating. Firstly you cannot stay logged in. Secondly you have to change your password every time as the log in provisions on the app do not work.
Job opportunity scam
I was contacted by a headhunter looking for freelancer to work for Consumer Reports Inc. It turned out the headhunter was impersonating a real person and using her stolen business card (police is already on the case). I played along. Now I got a contract to sign from Consumer Reports (may be fake)?
Just another subscription service . . . terrible
As many reviewers have noted, Consumer Reports routinely charges and overcharges for annual subscriptions; and fails to address billing issues and cancellations. My experience indicates they are antagonistic towards their customers, failing to honor cancellations; with an awful customer experience. For a publication supposedly focused on Consumers, Consumer Reports fails in almost every possible way.
CR plays Gotcha with renewals
They tout consumer support and transparency, but for their renewals, they're terrible. Rec'd >6 letters to renew mag, many emails about reviews/promos, but zero advising of digital exp. Play Gotcha if you don't cancel before renewal. Called, spoke to CSR and Sup'r, they acknowledge this is their policy.
Do Not Trust Consumer Reports
Two years ago I canceled my subscription. I stopped receiving the magazine. Sadly I didn’t catch the $59 auto pay on my credit card in 2024. Fast forward to this month and I saw a random $59 charge so I called the credit card company, it was for Consumer Reports. I called Consumer Reports and they said I didn’t cancel and they would not refund my money even though I had not received any issues of the magazine since I canceled. Rather ironic for a consumer watchdog organization!
Fraudulant
This is the second time that I have signed up with CR and had troubles. The first time they were charging me double per month and had to go through a lot of rigamarole to get refunded. This recent time, I believe that they kept me subscribed even though I had unsubscribed. Fraud.
I was apparently set up for auto renew…
I was apparently set up for auto renew which I was unaware. I received an email that renewal was coming up. I replied to cancel my membership. I was charged $39 anyway! I spoke with customer support and they would only refund $29. They were charging me $10 for 3 days which I never used. I haven't accesed their site even in a year. Customer service was rude, talking over what I was trying to say. Made me wait on hold for 20 minutes to speak with a supervisor. Still no help. I feel so ripped off. Kept hearing from them how they were a non profit. So that gives them the right to steal my money?
Bad service, worse company engaging in fraud
Both a lousy tool for consumers and a crooked company. I got a subscription to try to get guidance on products for a renovation. It was totally useless - no actual reviews, just stars, full of outdated products that are no longer sold and missing current models, and missing large categories of products (no section for bathtubs, for instance). I should have cancelled it immediately but made the mistake of putting it on the back burner relying on the promise at sign up that I could “cancel any time” and get a prorated refund… which turned out to be a lie. I just called them and was told their policy changed to no longer give any refunds and I got an email about it before the policy changed to explain and give me the opportunity to cancel. I went and found it, this is what it said: “ This email is to notify you that we are updating our User Agreement to reflect a change in our Refund Policy, effective April 9, 2025. This revision outlines how refunds will be issued. By continuing to be a member after the effective date, you accept and agree to the updated User Agreement.” I don’t know about you, but I would not say that that is a clear notification that they are NO LONGER OFFERING REFUNDS!!! This is a really absurd fraudulent practice and makes it clear that this place lacks any moral fiber and is definitely not a legitimate nonprofit.

Ordered subscription for basics and even
donated tax for it. Then 'after' another
screen pops up and says you want to add the annual car review...and add digital...All priced too high. I wanted to cancel so I called customer service and was put on hold way too long. Finally, I got someone who wanted me to justify my cancelation. I threatened to contact the BBB and they canceled it. Their top
4 executives together make about 2 1/2
Million Dollars. I will bet you many or most employees get big salaries and I
have a suspicion there is minimal money left to actually do the research. I will no longer trust them not to take bribes. Actual hours of testing will no longer be something I have confidence in.
Bye Bye.
(BBB might want to reexamine this non-profit. My new opinion is it is a scam.)
Too Bad.
Consumers Can't Rate Products Anymore
Consumer Reports used to be great and interactive. You could rate your products and it actually had one of the most comprehensive surveys for your products beyond just standard reviews. Now you can't submit reviews of products anymore. They just completely removed that ability and it's not a useless site. The lack of ability to do so means less transparency and less overall desire to even remotely interact with their website, the magazine, and makes me question their customer feedback since I can't personally contribute anymore like you used to be able to do. They have surveys every once and a while but that's not good enough. Need to be able to review products as we see fit on our own time. Do surveys based off of what we review say a year later a follow-up survey comes to us to check reliability etc and then again for the next few years or allow updated reviews too. This new way is just terrible. Everybody I know that loved it no longer uses or trusts it because of these changes.
This is a great organization that…
This is a great organization that provides information and advocacy for consumer safety. I have been a member for years and very much appreciate their guides. In a fast-paced shopping environment that encourages impulse-buying, it is really helpful to have a model of how to slow down and be thoughtful and careful when making purchases. Would highly recommend reading the articles in addition to the reviews, which cover recent findings on safety. They update their recommendations based on new information when things change, and provide background and history on topics. They provide ways to help advocate for other people's privacy, safety, and health as well.
Be careful
My membership was canceled in July 2024. I don't have any access to account at Consumer Reports anymore since July 2024, but they autorenewal subscription anyway and took $30,74 from my account on 01/03/2025. I canceled membership because it is not worth the cost. I didn't get digital access to all promised benefits.
Honestly not worth the cost. Too vague
Honestly not worth the cost. They don't provide details to back up thier ratings. Any other website has more details. Plus they don't deep dive at all. I used it to rank products which it does provide and is helpful but I can't trust it without seeing the breakdown. 1-5 rating scale is not enough. So my take is save your money and do more research. Ratings.com is great at providing detailed breakdowns and reviews a wider range of products
