I have just purchased my first bonsai…
I have just purchased my first bonsai tree and I am not disappointed. It is stunningly beautiful. I congratulate this company for their expertise and care. My tree is a chinese elm and what I ordered the actual tree looks even better. I am in a kind of trance at the moment just looking at it. It came well packed and the staff who packed it a great big thank you!

I have ordered from Bonsai Direct in the past. I have a Jade Bonsai which I purchased from them in 2019. For some time I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a Serissa Bonsai, and finally gave in and ordered one this week.
The order was placed on Tuesday and arrived today (Friday). Bonsai Direct use DPD for deliveries; DPD are a great company as deliveries are always within the specified window.
When my Serissa Bonsai arrived this morning it was well packaged and very well hydrated considering that it had been in transit. Bonsai Direct pack their trees with great care; they are watered prior to despatch, the pot and soil wrapped in bubble wrap to keep the soil most, then the whole tree is lovingly boxed with plenty of protection to keep it steady in transit.
Bonsai Direct provide a great after sales service. They are always on hand to answer any queries which you may have. Nothing is too much trouble. They are passionate about what they do and the trees which they sell.
I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Rude staff and two tiny bags of soil
I couldn’t believe when the pot arrived that I only had a tiny amount of soil provided with it. When I rang up to ask for more to be sent as it was not nearly enough and I had just spent £60 on the pot I couldn’t believe how rude the female staff member was. She just kept saying it’s free and it’s enough and when I said it isn’t enough she would argue if I’m going to be a tiny tree in a big pot. I said to her multiple times it wasn’t a small tree it’s a large tree but the whole point in repotting is to put fresh soil in not to use old soil you’ve had for years in it. This is expected by the company. I was told off for talking over her when she repeadly would talk over me. I’ve now had to spend another £10 on soil. The email address I was given to send photos to was invalid and the contact us page at the time of writing this is blank. Rude staff and I’ve felt ripped off as I only went with that company as the soil is was supplied. Comments like “it’s only common sense if you’re going to put a small bonsai in a big pot you’ll need more soil” is just rude as I had explained multiple times at that point it’s a large bonsai.
Expect to buy more soil and have rude staff if you have an issues.
Further to below comments proves that I wasn’t listened to from the start as I was talked over. I didn’t remove the soil from the bonsai tree it’s completely intact. Photo will be supplied in extra feedback as proof you can see it’s completely in tact and in shape of the original bonsai and the pot isn’t much bigger than the original one so no I didn’t remove the soil as you claimed I had said to you. Refunded £10 which is the cost of the soil and delivery not a day of someone being arguementive over an issue which is not the customers fault.

As explained over the phone, the amount of free soil you have received is the amount we have always sent with this size pot which is more than sufficient when repotting a bonsai that would fit appropriately in the pot. You were arguing that we had not sent you "everything needed to repot a bonsai" as marketed which is in fact exactly what we sent you but you did not feel you had enough soil. You informed me that you had removed all of the original soil before repotting which will cause your bonsai roots to rot, this is a large reason why most people do not remove all of the original soil.
When you called, you never actually asked if we would send you anymore soil. You told us there wasn't enough and proceeded to undermine our expertise and talk over me so I could not explain.
I simply tried to explain that unless you were repotting a tiny tree into this pot, there should be more than enough soil. You told me about various scenarios I should remarket the product for to which I responded that it was "common sense" that repotting a small tree into such a large pot would require more soil and that I couldn't remarket for these scenarios as it would be never ending. Up until this point, you had not even mentioned how big your own bonsai was only that it was appropriate to repot it into this sized pot. I was not questioning your intelligence, or the size of your tree, I was trying to explain that you should have had enough soil unless the bonsai was very small.
I am unsure why you cannot use the form on our contact us page or email us directly, it has been working for everyone else and when I emailed you directly after establishing your email address you were able to respond.
I can only apologise if you feel I was being rude, I was struggling to get any information across to you as I either could not talk or my expertise was questioned.
We have refunded you £10 to cover your cost of purchasing extra soil, we have taken your feedback into consideration but we do not want our customers to be unhappy.
Fantastic bonsai trees
Trees arrived in fantastic condition & packaged really well. Delivery was very speedy & exactly as requested during checkout. The aftercare booklet which came with the trees is really informative & will be a great help when looking after them. Really pleased I've found the website, will definately be ordering more as get more experienced.

Well what can I say … after buying a Bonsai Tree for my sons 40th for which he was delighted!! Also the amazing help I received from Sarah I then entered a competition for sending in my review!
Well I on went and won £50 to purchase on their website how thrilled and excited was I, so I have treated myself to a gorgeous tree for myself with some accessories… I only ordered it two days ago and it arrived today!!

Delivery failure
I ordered a bonsai for a 40th birthday gift. I asked for a specific delivery date and asked if the gift could be left in the unlocked porch. I received the delivery time information, but DPD wouldn't leave the gift in the porch! As it was a Friday birthday I was extremely disappointed to learn that it won't now be delivered until the following Monday.
As this was a very very special birthday I am extremely upset at the failure to deliver.
I can't say what the bonsai will be like now that it hasn't been delivered, but it certainly is very disappointing and totally unsatisfactory especially as there is a 40th balloon and tag in the box and the birthday date has now been missed.
I can't say that I would recommend this service to anyone.

Dear Rita, That you for your order. I am so sorry that your gift was not delivered on Friday. We did dispatch it on the right day and we did include those delivery instructions. I tried to phone DPD over the weekend but they were closed. I have phoned again this morning and it will be delivered today. Rest assured the bonsai is well watered before delivery and will be absolutely fine in the box for over a week.
I am so sorry you feel the need to write such a negative review. This is totally a DPD driver error and completely beyond our control. 99% of orders are delivered as ordered but we do say 'We cannot guarantee' delivery at the checkout as sometimes there are breakdown or illness which causes delays. In this instance DPD could not advise as to why it was not delivered. Clearly you hold us responsible but I am unsure as to what we could have done to prevent the delay which is why we always say delivery is not guaranteed. I am so sorry that the special birthday was missed. Kind regards Sarah

Not impressed
I'm in the "not awfully impressed" camp.
I bought a "Premium Indoor Bonsai" for my wife for Christmas.
When the tree arrived, it looked great and was extremely well packaged.
I followed all instructions, ensuring it was watered as directed but almost immediately (we're talking a handful of days) the leaves turned yellow and began dropping. I wasn't too concerned as the instructions said this might happen.
We soldiered on for a few months but the tree got worse and worse, in spite of it being properly cared for, as per the instructions.
In March, I got in contact with Bonsai direct who asked me to send some photos.
"It looks like the tree has dried out at some point as it is the top that looks to be suffering the most. It could have dried out from lack of water (possibly volume rather than frequency of watering) or gotten too hot."
This was odd as we always made sure it was properly cared for.
Subsequently I was asked to cut the bark to see if it was green underneath. Some bits were, some not and I fed this back.
I then got further advice, damp soil, bright location etc, another six weeks until improvement but this didn't improve matters.
Obviously I had hoped for the sad specimen to be replaced, but that offer was clearly not forthcoming.

We take great pride in the quality of our bonsai trees, and we can assure you that the tree was in perfect health when it left our nursery. Our team carefully nurtures each bonsai, and it takes us many years to grow them to their optimal state.
After reviewing the photos you provided after three months of delivery, we noticed that the top of the bonsai showed dry and crispy leaves, while there were clearly many new bright green shoots on the lower branches. This indicates that at some point, the bonsai may have become too dry or too hot, which could have affected its overall health. We believe that the advice you received regarding maintaining a proper level of moisture and providing a bright location (but avoiding direct sunlight) was indeed helpful under the circumstances.
We understand your disappointment and frustration with the condition of the bonsai. However, we would like to emphasise that the bonsai was delivered in perfect condition, and it is not possible for us to be responsible for its well-being after three months, as we are not there personally to care for it.
Negative reviews are always disheartening for us, as we strive to provide the highest quality bonsai trees and exceptional customer service. We take each review seriously and use them as an opportunity to learn and improve. In this case, we are genuinely puzzled as to how you feel we are at fault, as it was delivered in perfect condition.
Your review seems a little unfair to us but nonetheless, we respect your perspective and are committed to resolving this matter to the best of our abilities.
I shall personally email you again and hopefully another 3 and a half months down the line we could have us updated photos as clearly in March the bonsai had loads of new shoots and at that point we were not overly concerned and felt the bonsai would make a full recovery with time.
