I hired a van for 3 weeks, van was great everything you need inside and was well organised, Lauren was so helpful and professional, I would highly recommend Awesome Campers AAA+++

Just completed a 2 week trip on the east coast. Had an amazing time. The van is basic but exactly what you need and great value for money. Looking forward to my next trip with awesome campers.

We had the best time in an Awesome Campervan, the staff were great and the people in Perth were very helpful, would recommend them

Be warned, it's money down the drain!

I had the Elgrand Campervan 3 weeks and since day 1 several defects reported to the hotline.
I had not received a GPS although it was specified in the package, at the same time all USB accesses were defective in the driver's area. To use the phone as a navigator and to charge was therefore not possible. Also no music via USB.
The battery was also dead after 6-12h drive after 4 hours and woke you up in the middle of the night with a loud beep.
My wipers were not present in the back and in the front also defective.
The front left light was patched with cable ties and not very trustworthy. The alarm system went off (to the delight of the other campers) every time you put the key in the lock or unlocked the door from the inside - because the battery on the key was dead, but you were forced to do so.
The gas stove was also defective and the 10l water tank was stocked with animals when I arrived.

I had actually planned to stand free and the battery only worked for 4h.

Apart from that, it is expected that the van may be picked up only at the last minute and completely cleaned inside and outside at 10 o'clock is given back (deep clean, so that it is rented directly so further - cleaning utensils you have to buy yourself of course and pay the car wash).

Honestly, I would have rented a simple car (which would be much cheaper) I would have had more of it and less stress!

This is complete renter beware. Awesome rip-off rather than Awesome Camper.
The camper we hired had a fridge that didn’t work the minute the car was turned off, super expensive for a very very basic van.
The aircon worked eventually and it wasn’t even a really hot North QLD day.
The van was unroadworthy with chips in the windscreen and the wing mirror swung in once you drove over 80kms per hour.
Complete bomb and worth about $40 a day if that is what the budget traveller is happy to pay. We were charged well in excess of this.
We collected the van with just enough petrol to make it to the nearest petrol station. Really, who does that?
The agent in Townsville was lovely, but seriously the middle man shouldn’t allow these vehicles to be on the road.

So we rented our campervan two weeks ago and to say it was a bad experience would be an understatement.. we got a blow out on our back tyer and when we left it to Bridgestone (tyre shop) we were told we needed 4 new tyres.. I was told by the company the tyres were checked before we collected the van which was an absolute lie.. The man who I believe was Irish was very helpful on the phone and got the tyres and the expenses covered ( very lucky the blowout happened in the back tyre not the front) another issue we had at night was the heat coming from the van .. the temperature outside wasn't to hot but the van was still really hot and this was down to the small fridge over heating which was very worrying so we ended up turing off the fridge and throwing out all the food we bought which was expensive.. the two side doors wouldn't open so in turn we had to climb over the two front seats over all our luggage and bags to open the van.. overall a bad experience which didn't have a massive Impact on our travels as we had the best time but really really disappointed in the overall awesome campervans experience.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER
After 23 days in the Nissan Elgrand (Skippy model) camper i'm going to explain to you why you should spend those 200$ more on the next option and don't ever pick this one despite of being the cheapest one.

- Broken chairs, Broken kitchen appliances (we had to buy some from our pocket), broken gas stove that spends too much gas (13 gas cannisters for 23 days, 2 skinny persons not even cooking twice a day), whatever is not broken is about to as there's no cleaning or maintenance done on the campers.
- Fridge only works for 8-12h if you drive a minimum of 4h/day, let me do the maths for you: 12+4=16, 24-16=8h. That means that despite of driving 4h a day you will have to wake up in the middle of the night to turn the fridge off and leave it off for 8h! Resume: there's no useful fridge, just another storage space. I'm paying more for not having a fridge, nice. When we picked it up the fridge was already discharged so it spend the first 2 days off; when i called them to tell them that was not normal at all they told me it is.
- The camper itself is so old and rusty, not cleaned (even the curtains had too much dirty), but the best part is about to come. Overheats and smells really bad when driving on uphills, breaks smelled really bad when driving on downhills (you can only drive over flat roads to feel nothing is gonna break), start battery doesn't work properly and the engine started working really bad that i had to call for assistance.
- I paid the full coverage insurance (900$) but when i called for assistance they started sending me photos of what parts i had to look for instead of heading myself to a mechanic. I told them to do so cause i paid for an insurance and i'm not a mechanic and they left me looking for one open garage on a Sunday. Not helpful and trying me to fix it instead of a mechanic to do so. Finally found no one so had to drive absolutely carefully to not find myself broken down in the middle of a National Park.
- The cherry on the top was when we drop the camper off the girl from the office revise it and told us everything was perfect. Not even 1 day after that i have charged 75$ more for no reason and with no explanation at all. I asked them why but not reply, just an extra cost with no justification.

Honestly i spent 2.220$ and i felt really cheated, so if i were you i would just spend those 200$ more to pick any other company and avoid all these problems that i have ever had with companies like Cruisin, Jucy, ....
They also own Callypso campers and Get-a- car rentals, so beware of those companies also as you'll probably will feel as cheated as i felt.

If you have this van and this company booked CANCEL it now. A waste of your money and holiday. We are currently going into day 5 abandoned in the outback due to a worn and torn snapped key to match a worn and torn old van. Start of our holidays the van was a day late, went to pick up the van and it was nothing like the photographs. Old, dirty, front window broken, sun roof broken, portable cooker broken etc. Our key snapped in the van on Saturday and are still awaiting help from the company who are sending a few messages back and forth, ruined our holiday from start to finish. Would not recommend this company.

Please do your research before campervan hire and please steer clear of this company. My friend and myself hired the Elgrand from Awesome Campers. First off, this company provided us with an illegal unroadworthy car. When we dropped the car into Perth at the end of our hire and may I say the person we dealt with at Perth was great - efficient and very helpful - but little too late at the end of our hire. We were informed that The Elgrand was actually not even road worthy - x2 tyres were completely bald and the driver headlight did not work (which we discovered days into our trip but could not get fixed). So, we had driven for two weeks doing 4800km in an illegal unroadworthy car! I did question the state of the tyres when I picked the car up from Adelaide, to be informed they had been checked.

The car was in very average condition and didn’t work as sold. We mainly wanted a van with a sink, water and fridge (connected to dual battery) so we could stay in remote locations not needing to connect to power or pay for caravan parks. As per Awesome Campers, the fridge was supposed to hold battery for 8-12 hours after driving for a minimum of 4 hours. Day one, we drove for approx 6 hours straight and the fridge went flat after 1 hour - our cold food we had purchased was ruined, $100 worth of food. We reset the inverter as suggested and day two after 8 hours of driving, again same thing happened.

I called Awesome Campers as soon as they opened and they were not willing to get battery replaced for us as they said they were unable to find someone until the next day to replace the battery and we would need to stay for an extra night which we couldn’t due to our tight schedule. Funnily enough, they have it written in their contract they won't pay for any off-road time even if its due to a fault in the car *not caused by you*. They told us to purchase an eski and after questioning the money side of things, their solution was to “refund” us $200. Not really a refund when we then had to use this money to purchase an eski to store our food/drinks for the remainder of the trip (2 weeks) and buy ice every day, also they didn’t care about the money we spent on our food. We couldn’t keep the eski as we were flying out from Perth, they also didn’t care.

The side mirrors didn’t even click into place properly, and in the wind would move constantly - subsequently we drove with no passenger side mirror vision. The sink leaked, so we couldn’t use it. I would never hire from this company again, they don’t care once you have picked up and paid for the van, they are not willing to help and they are happy to let people drive illegal cars on the road. Please DO NOT waste your money.

Horrendous experience, not worth one star! Broke down 10 mins after leaving the office in Cairns.. nobody from the company would help as it was a Sunday. Spent a day of our holiday sat on the side of the road arranging their van to be towed, even though we were 10 mins from their office!!!!!!! Soooo dangerous too, the van went into limp mode and was on its last legs and basically wouldn't go faster than 40km in a 100km, thankfully nobody was hurt!! We had to sit on the side of the road, no toilet, no water in 32 degree heat for 4 hours trying to arrange fixing their camper ringing so many numbers with no help. Absolutely no communication from the company to explain what to do, nobody was interested, I had to chase every step. We got the racq out who deemed the van unsafe.They arranged another camper for us with had no fan and meant another 5k deposit on top of the 3k already paid. Its crazy to think, that although we were paying customers, we had to spend a day of our holiday organising (had ring about 10 ppl) to fix their van. No compensation was given, no even a "sorry"... far from it, they tried to make out that we were incapable drivers with snidey remarks! When it came to getting our deposit back they told us that we had been driving the van in 2nd gear??? Almost as if to say we weren't going to get it back, even our new company which we got the 2nd camper from had the cheek to say... "oh but there was nothing wrong with the first camper.. ive heard you were driving in second gear?! " so they had even blamed us to the new company.......Absolute insane as we have 26 years driving experience between us plus the racq deemed the vehicle as unsafe! Why would we want to break down and waste time Tried???? Tried to put the blame on us. We also spoke to an Irish girl in the office who was super unfriendly and nasty and snappy to us. She also said you might not get the deposit back as you were driving in second gear??? I have no idea where this assumption came from. Funny I managed to drive from Cairns to townsville fine in the second camper? Im honestly disgusted, they should be apologising to us for sending us out in an unsafe vehicle and losing a day of our holiday! Disgusting seevice all round. I would never ever ever go with them again, if you have any issues you are screwed, do not book with them!!!!

Nous avons eu 3 pannes soit 8 jours d'immobilisation plus une semaine sans pouvoir ouvrir le coffre et donc sans pouvoir utiliser le réfrigérateur et la partie cuisine. À chaque fois que nous sommes tombés en panne nous avons dû avancer les frais d'hôtel et de train. Nous avons dû trouver par nos propres moyens une voiture de location pour 3 jours qui nous a été remboursée. Concernant tous ces désagréments nous venons seulement d'être remboursés (10 jours après la restitution du véhicule) des frais avancés et de 5 jours de location. Aucun dédommagement pour les jours perdus et pour l'impossibilité d'utiliser la partie cuisine et réfrigérateur.

Dirty van, busted lock, curtain not big enough to cover window. When I got this van, I checked the oil...guess what? Nothing in there, literally no oil on the dip stick. They told me to go and buy some and I'll be refunded. What a joke...3 months later still waiting. Absolutely ruined my holiday. You couldn't leave it anywhere with your valuables in, because of the busted lock and it was too dirty to sleep in. The lady you get through to on the phone was a rude, unhelpful person. Avoid at all costs, it's worth paying extra for the peace of mind of support if things go wrong.
