WPML claims to be the ultimate translation plugin, but the reality is that it has become bloated, dangerous legacy software that will irreparably damage your database—especially when used with modern page builders.
They claim full compatibility with Divi 5, but their translation duplication method actually injects malformed, corrupted JSON directly into the post_content column, causing Fatal Errors and White Screens of Death (WSOD). When I contacted support to fix the damage their plugin caused, the real nightmare began.
Their technical assistance is embarrassingly incompetent. To fix the conflicts, they used their automated "Reset" feature, which, instead of cleaning the database, flooded my wp_posts table with hundreds of orphaned clones, completely destroying my layout library. They don't know how to properly read a database, they can't write a basic SQL query to clean the corrupted records they created, and worst of all, they blatantly lie.
Support guaranteed me they had completely emptied the translation tables (wp_icl_strings), yet my custom native-English plugin kept displaying their old Italian translations—absolute proof they hadn't actually cleaned the database. Instead of taking responsibility, they make excuses and ask you to provide previous backups (which their own plugin had already corrupted) so they don't have to do the manual dirty work.
You are paying top dollar for a plugin that will permanently pollute your database and a support team that just clicks automated buttons hoping the problems go away. Absolutely avoid this plugin if you run a professional environment.

I’ve been using WPML on one of my sites for over 3 months and I really like it. It just makes handling multi languages way easier once you get familiarized. Auto-translate feature works great too, I almost don't have to make any adjustments, they come basically ready to be pushed live.
Kudos to the support team, they’re super helpful and actually take the time to solve your issue, they have a great deal of empathy and you feel like you're helped by a real human at the other hand, which is rare these days.
Overall, I’m really happy with it and would definitely use it again for future projects 👍
WPML is the most flexible plugin among all multilingual plugins available. I have been using it for more than 10 years and don’t understand all these negative comments. Please show me any other multilingual plugin with such high quality automatic translation and! at such an affordable price (disclaimer: you need to use their PTC engine to achieve the best translation quality) with this level of flexibility.! You can even have different layouts for specific pages, and you can translate content automatically, manually, or use a mix of both.

No real response to support tickets - waiting for a week now. There are a lot of trouble with WPML. The support only answers: - "we will get back to you" - which they do with a new message: "we will get back to you". I have now received the third message of "we will get back to you" - which essentially means - they never get back to you.

It can’t be any more complicated: everything requires you to purchase credits, even migrating from an old site. On top of that, there are incompatibilities and annoying workarounds with other plugins and themes.

It is hostile design aimed at discouraging you from using your own tools or APIs. They hold your site's data hostage behind a wall of bad UX to squeeze more money out of you. In an era of open AI connectivity, WPML is a dinosaur trying to fence you in. Do not use this software

I have been using WPML (Multilingual CMS package) for three years and it has never properly worked (even though they have a partnership with my theme of choice, which I've happily used for over 12 years).
The list of issues is long. It includes buggy UI, spontaneously disappearing translations, a lot of broken pages and terrible support. I feel like they intentionally make the support process so frustrating you'll give up.
Support is incredibly slow. They will also close support tickets without notifying you, so you'll then have to start the process of opening a ticket (which is also not easy, as I'll explain next) all over again. Most of the issues I raised were never resolved, so I stuck to my bandaids and work-arounds. I spent much more time on fixing translations and helping my confused translators than I should. My translators are perpetually confused by the buggy UI.
Since they've introduced AI to help manage support tickets, things are even worse. You'll spend (sometimes a lot of) time, detailing an issue, and in the next screen an AI bot will have rewritten your ticket, missing key details. Since your original ticket is not saved, all that work you've done is lost. So you then have to correct the bot and rewrite everything again. It's incredibly frustrating.
I'm currently looking for a way to get out, but our large website is pretty dependent on WPML. It'll be a big job to move to a new translation plugin, I but am looking forward to the day I'm free of WPML.

I thought it would be faster, just reviewing AI translations. Since then one problem has been added to the next. That is why I tried the support. Forget all about it. After 4 days - they still have not even startet looking at the problems. And a legal disclaimer says that I will carry the responsibility of any issues that the support might cause. So I have just been giving up on this matter.
I have started to pay for the automatic translation service, but not worth it, it translate it yes, but when I try to change something, for example a link as for a different language there is a different page, the page redirect to a blank page hence I am not able to do anything. Tried to contact support over a week ago and still not answer. If it was a free service I can accept, but for paying clients this is definetelly no the way to go. Thank you for nothing.
A shitty company with an even shittier product. Don't buy their buggy plugins
Edit: è più di un'ora che sto dietro a una traduzione praticamente già pronta, sto inserendo tutto manualmente, dopo essere passata all'editor originale. Praticametne tutti i marcatori che sono riuscita a inserire con il vecchio editor sono spariti nella traduzione. Complimenti vivissimi!
Ti permette di tradurre tutti gli elementi di un articolo, ma dagli ultimi aggiornamenti, soprattutto con l'editor avanzato, presenta tantissimi problemi, creando difficoltà e rallentando molto il lavoro. Spesso nell'editor mancano i formattatori necessari e se si prova ad aggiungerli manualmente, tutti i link interni dell'articolo spariscono. Possibile che nessuno si sia accorto di questi bug piuttosto gravi?
Despite paying €99 annually for WPML, they block me from using DeepL in their so-called ATE (Advanced Translation Editor). The only way to use DeepL is by purchasing extra credits directly from them, which makes no sense—why isn’t the €99 fee enough for ATE access? There are no alternative solutions: unless I buy credits, they won’t help. Customer service is very poor, and they deliberately prevent you from using external translation tools in ATE. If you don’t have heavy translation needs or don’t rely on machine translation, WPML might work, but otherwise, I strongly recommend looking at alternatives.
