We had a terrible experience with Silver Fern Lodge Taupō.
The property is noticeably run‑down, and the room we were given was not in a condition suitable for guests, particularly at $240 per night. We chose to leave the same afternoon and are still working through the refund process.
The “Guest Lounge” was closed, with a paper sign indicating it was being used as a dorm and “for special guests only,” which contributed to an overall impression more in line with a budget hostel than a motel.
The general presentation, maintenance, and cleanliness of the property — both inside and out — were well below an acceptable standard.
We relocated to Wairakei Resort Taupō for $280 per night and found it to be excellent.
Based on this experience, we do not intend to stay at a VR Hotels property again.
