Overreach

I do not have problem with Swiftaid managing a single donation to JustGiving if it is helpful to all parties. What I object to considerably is the extended rights they then claim to all my potential Gift Aid opportunities. How are they managing my data ? This is an unacceptable overreach.

Hi Rob, thank you for sharing your concerns.

We understand that the scope of the Gift Aid authorisation may feel broader than a typical enduring Gift Aid declaration, which can cover eligible donations made to a charity during the previous four years and in the future until cancelled.

The authorisation presented during the donation explains that Swiftaid may add Gift Aid to other eligible donations made during that tax year where Gift Aid has not already been added. This is intended to help ensure eligible Gift Aid is not missed.

Transparency and the responsible handling of donor information are extremely important to us. Swiftaid is certified to ISO 27001 for information security management and ISO 22301 for business continuity management. The authorisation includes links to our Terms and Privacy Policy, and donors can review or cancel it at any time.

I appreciate what you're trying to do

I appreciate what you're trying to do, if you're legitimate. But DO NOT sign people up to something financial without ASKING them first.

I've always declared GiftAid, never yet had an issue with that. If charities need a service to help them with that OFFER IT AS AN OPTION - don't randomly send a thing saying "oh - thank you for 'signing up' for this" because I didn't.

I gave to a major charity who should know how to claim every GiftAid for their donations, I DO NOT know you, I DO NOT know how trustworthy you are and now you're saying I've signed up for a service with you.

This isn't how we do things - explain it, promote yourselves via the major charities who want to use you and increase awareness. You don't just do things with people's information, with no consent.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We're sorry our email caused concern.

Transparency is important to us. When a fundraising platform/charity chooses to use Swiftaid, the Gift Aid step within the donation journey explains that Swiftaid will be used to add Gift Aid, includes links to our Terms and Privacy Policy, and requires the donor to confirm their agreement before continuing.

After the donation, we send a welcome email with additional information, confirm the authorisation, and explain how it can be managed or cancelled at any time.

We appreciate that receiving an email from a company you weren't expecting can be surprising. However, Swiftaid does not create Gift Aid authorisations without a donor's agreement.

Hello Ray, we’re sorry the email caused concern. Swiftaid does not create an authorisation unless the donor chooses to add Gift Aid and accepts the authorisation wording.

The Gift Aid wording used within the donation journeys of the charities and platforms we work with names Swiftaid, explains what the authorisation covers and provides links to our Terms and Privacy Policy. We then send a welcome email confirming the authorisation and explaining how it can be managed or cancelled. We work hard to explain the authorisation clearly and transparently, while keeping the donation process straightforward for donors.

Swiftaid is ISO-certified and listed on GOV.UK as a commercial software supplier for HMRC Charities Online. You can manage or cancel your authorisation through your Swiftaid account, or email info@swiftaid.co.uk and we will be happy to help directly. We hope this clarifies the process.

I got an unsolicited email from Swiftaid

I got an unsolicited email from Swiftaid regarding Giftaid. Never heard of them, & certainly never signed up for their service. It's "red flags" all over as far as I can tell from the email, hence 1 star.
That said, their website has a valid certificate, & Justgiving states "Swiftaid is an ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 accredited company".
It's most likely a genuine 3rd party service provider to charities, but unless charity donors are clearly told to expect emails from them, the only safe action for anyone to do is send their emails to the spam bin.

The email was not unsolicited marketing. It was a service notification confirming a Gift Aid authorisation and explaining how it could be managed or cancelled. Before the authorisation is made, Swiftaid is named in the Gift Aid wording, which explains what we do and links to our Terms and Privacy Policy.
We work hard to explain the authorisation clearly and transparently, while keeping the donation process straightforward for donors.

As you mention, JustGiving works with Swiftaid. Swiftaid is ISO-accredited and is also listed on GOV.UK as a commercial software supplier for HMRC Charities Online. You can visit our website directly rather than following an email link, or email info@swiftaid.co.uk if you would like us to verify the notification or help cancel the authorisation. Hope this helps clarify things for you.

Unknown sender

I don't know who this is but got email with 2 links implying it's something to do with HMRC.
As I'm not keen on using such links, I can see no way of accessing my data assuming it's not a spam.
If it's genuine, why doesn't HMRC do their own work

Swiftaid is not HMRC and does not claim to be. Charities are responsible for claiming Gift Aid, and Swiftaid provides software that helps charities and authorised organisations prepare and submit those claims to HMRC. Swiftaid is listed on GOV.UK as a commercial software supplier for HMRC Charities Online.

The email was a service notification sent following a Swiftaid Gift Aid authorisation. You do not need to follow the links in the email. You can visit swiftaid.co.uk directly or email info@swiftaid.co.uk to verify the message, access your information or manage the authorisation. Hope this helps clarify things for you.

I found it very troubling that this…

I found it very troubling that this company, without my permission, links information about my charitable donations and then overrides my original requests on whether to claim gift aid - sending a note that says they will automatically apply it unless I take steps to decline again, and taking up to 10 percent of the proceeds for themselves. I don’t think the charities involved know Swiftaid’s questionable process of automatically overriding donor’s original requests. It makes me less likely to contribute at all to Gofundme or Movember (the two charities involved in sharing my information with them and then allowing them to back-claim previous donations unless I log on and tell them not to) due to Swiftaid’s relationship with them.

Hello Jean, thank you for raising your concerns. We’ve only recently become aware of your review, so apologies for the delayed response. We would like to clarify how the authorisation and our fees work.

Swiftaid does not add Gift Aid without a donor authorisation. The authorisation explains that it may cover eligible donations made during the tax year, including donations that were not individually Gift Aided. Where this applies, we notify the donor and provide a 21-day window in which to decline before Gift Aid is added.

Swiftaid never takes money from the donation itself. Many charities use our Gift Aid processing services free of charge. Where a charity chooses to use our Gift Aid Finder service, the charity pays a finder’s fee of up to 10% of the additional Gift Aid recovered that would otherwise have been missed. The charity agrees to both the service and the fee in advance, and the donor’s original donation remains completely untouched. Like any company, we charge for some services so that we can cover the cost of continuing to support thousands of charities and millions of donors.

We cannot discuss your individual donation history publicly, but we would be happy to confirm the authorisation that applied, what information was received and whether any Gift Aid was claimed. Please email info@swiftaid.co.uk and we will review this with you directly.
