The Inside Line: Racing the 500cc World Motocross Championship is the critically-acclaimed new book by British former 500 GP racer Rob Andrews. Have you ever wondered what it must have been like to race in the 500cc motocross GPs during their 1980s heyday? 'The Inside Line' tells you. Tracing Rob's journey from complete beginner, through to factory Kawasaki rider, GP contender, and Motocross des Nations team member, The Inside Line goes where no book has gone before: deep into the heart of life as a professional motocross racer. Superbly illustrated with nearly 400 pictures from some of the finest photographers in the industry, it takes the reader on a fascinating odyssey of insight and intrigue. Learn the inner workings of the grand prix motocross world, get answers to long-pondered questions, and discover things you never knew. There are facts that will surprise you, anecdotes that will make you laugh, and honest, never-before-published information. Find out how it felt to race against motocross legends on the world’s most famous circuits. Discover what it was like to race a full-factory 500 for Team Kawasaki. Learn how the riders lived, travelled, trained, and practiced while on the road. And even read how many in the close-knit GP paddock were ripped-off in an elaborate, multi-million-pound financial scam. Seriously. It happened. Join Rob as he guides you - in his own words - through the jubilant highs and occasionally devastating lows of his journey from raw novice all the way to the biggest stage of all: the world motocross championship. And by the end you’ll understand just what it was like - and what it took - to be a grand prix racer.

The book arrived super quick and all the memories Rob has in the book remind me of a lot of similar experiences I had I the 80/90's
Fast shipping, personally signed by the author, wrapped very well, beautiful book with outstanding contents.
I would recommend this as a must-read for any motocross enthusiast, and also for anyone with an interest in motorcycle racing, or motorsport in general.
The fundamentals of the book involve Rob telling us of his serendipitous discovery of motocross and his rise from an average local youth rider, to eventually competing in the 500cc World Championship, detailing some of the key people within the industry who spotted and supported him along the way.
But it’s so much more than just an autobiography.
Rob expands the book to describe the life of a rider following the Grand Prix trail. The story breaks away on several occasions, covering such subjects as life on the road, training schedules and how the riders lived week-to-week during the season. We learn about good deals that turned sour, of rogue mechanics, and some of the wheeling and dealing, practicalities of living on the road, and physical training required to get to the track and be competitive.
There’s the elation of great results, and satisfaction of earning good money at non-championship international events.
One of the best chapters of the book is devoted entirely to the infamous Namur circuit in Belgium, Rob talking in great detail of the spectacular nature of the venue and what made it so special.
Away from the sport’s elite, riders of this era lived a nomadic lifestyle for much of the racing season.
Rob’s astute observations of events that occurred decades ago shine through, and you can almost imagine yourself in the seat of the big Mercedes race truck, munching miles on the autoroute as swiftly as the big van will allow.
Eagle-eyed readers will see the attention to detail in the page footers… every so often you’ll see a popular 80s band and album / single listed, just to add to the ‘road trip’ feel.
There’s a fascinating postscript to the book, where Rob provides an analysis of his career, the highs and lows. And provides an interesting assessment of where his world champion ambitions failed, but succeeded for other riders of seemingly similar ability.
The quality of this book is exquisite and befitting of the price tag. Weighty and with high quality paper, it feels of high quality colourful and brings the many photographs that accompany the story to life.
All in all, a highly recommended purchase.
Like Rob said "it's the book i need". He wasn't wrong.
Excellent book all round.
Definitely recommend.
An interesting insight of the life of a professional mx rider in the 80's. Weither factory backed or private rider, the road to success was full of traps and setbacks as well as moments of glory. A pleasant reading and a story worth telling.
wonderful book , the wrighting is done from a childhood dream how came true. Rob was on the right spot on the right place and was part of it. He did wright from a riders eyepoint....Beautifull pictuers
'The Inside Line', what a cracker of a book by Rob Andrews! A 'must have on the shelf' for every Motocross rider on the planet, surely a great read for any motorsport enthusiast young and old. Beautifully put together, fantastic photos and superbly written. A man dedicated to his sport, chasing his dream, living on the road, with some horrific bad luck and some well earned super results on his journey. From the young Motocrosser in their apprenticeship to the hardened, from sports participators and enthusiasts this book is just s fantastic book about chasing a dream, not just thinking it. Towards the end of the book good inspiration and thought provoking positive attitude towards your sport or even just life in general is there in written words to be absorbed. The icing on the cake is very cleverly within the pages of the book for the very observant amongst you, it's about music, tunes listened too by the Author and anyone who had the privelege to be on the road with him, can't give too much away. The Warning I give about the book, you may have to put it down as the Author, Rob Andrews, very clever again, is a bit repetive in the introductions, like sitting on a start line, twisting your throttle back and letting go multiple times, then the gate drops (or the tape shoots up for the older ones) . As you read the early chapters Rob makes you think, your own mind will call up images, you may have to put it down and take some deep breaths. This just draws you back into this amazing story of not dreaming a dream, but physically chasing it.
Great book with tons of fantastic photography and to top it off Rob autographed it!
Great book, about an exciteing era of moto cross. I am
the same age as the author, raced at the same time only not at the high level he did. Thats why this master
piece of literature is so special for me.
Fantastic book, gives a real aspect of the life of a Grand Prix motocross rider
great Book , love reading about the best years of motocross and a great career by Rob
The book ok
Little bit disappointed I thought it was about the American Moto cross
Everything about this book is brilliant. From the way it was packaged for delivery, to the quality of the materials that went into the production. I enjoy autobiographical books so would recommend it to anyone, not just MX fans. It was clearly a labour of love which reflects the authors focus and attention to detail. It’s fascinating to know what was happening but even more so to read about why and how it was resolved. He was definitely listening to “Wild Wade” when he attended his training schools because he’s applied the same rule to his writing, which in my opinion, are of a professional standard. I’ll keep this book for as long as I live and I’m likely read it several times, or flick through the brilliant images to remind myself of the Golden Age of motocross.
Quick shipping and a great book! Well worth the expense.
As a former mx rider I can relate to some of the experiences.
Funny that I started on a Suzuki TM125, and then moved up to a Yamaha YZ 125d as well
Enjoyed the whole book
Communication was good during ordering and delivery.
My husband has not read this yet but is really pleased and says it looks good!
Alles ist super gelaufen und hatte sogar die Chance mit dem Schriftsteller direkt in Kontakt zu sein
