order No 033493192 Audio biographies bought 26th from Oxfam in Chorlton in Nov 2024 finally arrived Tuesday 7th of April 2026.
After waiting a week after I was informed it had been posted I rang Oxfam and was told it can take up to 3 weeks to arrive as they only use 2nd class post. After a month I rang again and was assured it had been posted and must have been lost in the post and was again assured if it was returned to them and they would get in touch. I did get a full refund at the time this was £49.99 + 3.99.
I've had this rare book on my wanted list for many years and popped up again in March this yearand at the same Oxfam shop at a fraction of the price so without hesitation I bought and on inspection it is the exact markings on the copy of the book as described to me by the staff at Oxfam in Nov 2024. The only conclusion I can think is that it was never posted.
This and my other concerns with Oxfam are, when I paid with my card which always requires my sending a pass code to secure purchases. Oxfams system by pass this added level of security which left me thinking it might have been a scam!! But trying to contact Oxfam was fruitless the didnt answer my calls and ignored my emails which resulted in a number of calls to my card provider to confirm it wasn't. I did get the book and I'm very pleased with it but from this and previous dealings I could not in all honesty give them a higher score

Null Sterne!!

Null Sterne!!! Der Oxfam-Laden in Düsseldorf beschäftigt fragwürdige ältere Damen, von denen eine meinte: "Ob ich zu d*mm wäre, das Kleingeld richtig abzuzählen", woraufhin ich mich beschwerte, bis zu den höchsten Stellen. Die ältere Dame wurde gedeckt, und ich bekam ein Hausverbot. Ich fügte meiner Beschwerde ebenfalls hinzu, dass eine Mitarbeiterin, eine gespendete alte Kette mit einem wertvollen Münz-Anhänger einfach für sich eingesteckt hatte. Ich war zufällig bei der Spende anwesend, und da für die Kette noch kein Preis bestimmt war, ließ ich diese bis zum Folgetag reservieren. Am nächsten Tag "wusste" keiner der Mitarbeiter etwas von einer Kette, auch an dem weiteren Tagen. Auch die Preise der gespendeten Kleidung und Gegenstände sind extrem und unverhältnismäßig hoch. Dabei kriegen sie doch alles geschenkt. An alle Spender: bitte gebt spendet Oxfam NICHTS. Das Geld kassieren die, nicht die Armen, die bleiben arm. Verkauft eure Sachen lieber selber bei Kleinanzeigen oder Vintage zu moderaten Preisen. Vertraut Oxfam nicht. Das ist eine sehr suspekte Organisation. Alleine deren Skandale! Googelt mal!

Gute Unternehmeridee, aber …

Mir ist die Unternehmeridee zwar einleuchtend, aber irgendwie scheint es nicht ganz verständlich für mich, was sich Spender manchmal bei Ihren guten Gaben denken. Hier spreche ich von zwei Erfahrungen in Oxfam Shops aus Berlin, einmal Prenzlauer Berg und einmal Kreuzberg. Heute habe ich nicht aufgepasst und habe eine lange, dicke Hemdbluse erworben. Zu Hause angekommen ist mir leider aufgefallen, dass die Sache irgendwie nach Raucherhaushalt riecht. Ein anderes Mal war ich wirklich erfreut über eine Art Kuchenplatte auf einem höheren Ständer, der mit einem Fuß verschraubt war. Für Macarons oder zur Präsentation kleiner Kuchen. Vom Material her war es gehämmertes Metall und versilbert. Zu Hause habe ich die Platte ausgepackt und wollte den Fuß richtig mit der Platte zusammendrehen, und siehe da: Das Gewinde war schief eingelassen und wenn es fest verschraubt wurde stand der Ständer schief. Na Danke! Umtausch ausgeschlossen. Und dafür fand ich jeweils die Preise zu teuer. Also wenn man selbst eher ein bedürftiger Mensch ist und Second Hand auch deshalb nutzen möchte weil es günstig ist, dann nicht zu Oxfam gehen.

These guys cancelled my order and…

These guys cancelled my order and refused to ship it because I live in the USA. I get it. Our government stinks. But I offered to pay all applicable shipping costs. They were completely rude about it. I will never shop from them again and you won't either if you know what’s good for you. Don’t support businesses like these.

Mitarbeiter klingeln ungefragt an der Haustür

Die Unternehmensidee fand ich bisher gut über gespendete Sachen Hilfsprojekte zu finanzieren. Deshalb 2 Sterne. Was für mich überhaupt nicht zeitgemäßes handeln ist, Mitarbeiter an Wohnungstüren zu schicken. Für mich hat das Unternehmen damit an Seriosität deutlich verloren, so dass ich als Konsequenz dort nichts mehr hin bringen werde. Dieses an-Wohnungstüren-ungefragt klingeln als Teil des Geschäftsmodells in einer Zeit wo so viele Betrüger unterwegs sind, zeugt für mich auf Unsensibilität. Und schade finde ich auch, dass scheinbar Geld der Verkäufe für solche Mitarbeiter ausgegeben wird. Passiert heute, 21. Oktober 25, 14.20 in der Templiner Straße in Berlin.

Heute habe ich im Schlussverkauf in Ffm…

Heute habe ich im Schlussverkauf in Ffm Bockenheim
ein T-Shirt gekauft. Laut Schild und Aussagen der Verkäuferinnen sollte alles außer Taschen und Schmuck zum halben Preis zu haben sein !
Nun hatte das dünne T-Shirt aber lange Ärmel. Mit diesem Argument wurde der Preis nicht halbiert !
Nachdem ich es trotzdem gekauft hatte, fiel mir ein, dass eins der Shirts, ebenfalls mit langen Ärmeln, welches ich 2 Tage vorher gekauft hatte, auch um die Hälfte reduziert wurde !
Ich habe umgehend nochmal nachgefragt, bekam aber die selbe Begründung und zurück nehmen wollten Sie das Shirt auch nicht. Also, entweder ist alles wie vorher angegeben zum halben Preis oder nicht ! Ich habe den Eindruck, dass die Verkäuferinnen oft selbst nicht wissen, was jetzt nun Sache ist ! Wer macht da eine Einweisung ?
Ich war jedenfalls sehr verärgert, da keine klaren Regeln bestehen. Ich habe schon einiges gespendet, aber diesen Laden werde ich erstmal nicht mehr betreten.

I’d leave no stars if it was possible

I’d leave no stars if it was possible, they must be the only secondhand booksellers that actually don’t want to sell books or raise money for their own charity. Staff are terrible, I appreciate some are volunteers but the paid staff have no idea, they advertise a book in a shop and if you visit that shop and ask to see it (one was a £400 book, so with a volunteer describing the condition I do want to physically see it first) you are fed the most insane lies, oh my password don’t work, the manager’s not in, the person who does the online stuff only works on a Wednesday morning all total rubbish. Worst shops for lies are Bridport and Totnes, both shocking! I now avoid oxfam, (used to try to support but you know when they can’t be bothered) I’ll now support independent bookseller via Abe or Biblio as you at least get half decent service, for me whoever is in charge of Bookselling at Oxfam probably needs a sideward step as they are costing Oxfam thousands in rubbish sales techniques and clueless selling,

Enttäuscht

Hallo, wir bringen seit ca. 2 Jahren diverse Sachen zu Oxfam Erfurt. Meistens haben wir Bücher mitgenommen und kürzlich einen Pulli. Bisher fanden wir, das es eine gute Sache ist, nicht mehr benötige Sachen dort abzugeben. Heute Vormittag hat mein Mann wieder Sachen abgegeben, so z.B 3 Handtaschen, darunter 1 Designer Tasche goldfarben und zwei neuwertige Handtaschen in grün und rot, außerdem sehr gut erhaltene Bücher und einige andere Sachen. Die Dame, die die Sachen angenommen hat, hielt es nicht einmal für notwendig ein Dankeschön zu meinem zu sagen. Ich finde, das dies kein gutes Zeugnis für Anstand und Empathie zeigt und bin darüber sehr enttäuscht. Wir werden uns überlegen, ob wir das Geschäft weiter unterstützen

Item damaged in post and head office…

Item damaged in post and head office didn’t care; didn’t even read my issue or bother to look at photos they requested. Instead mentioned item was marked with in pencil (which I knew) and therefore wouldn’t help. Item was very expensive too and packaging was worse then I’d get for a super cheap book online. Beware.

Oxfam managers in Swanage are bullies

I used to volunteer at the Oxfam shop in Swanage; both the managers, Ian Vatcher and Paul Taylor, are incompetent, negligent and cowardly bullies.

Ian is irresponsible due to the fact he takes regular prolonged periods off work because he doesn’t know how to look after himself properly and instead of finding suitable cover to assist the volunteers, he leaves other people to do his job for him.

He personally blamed me for a situation when the shop’s key safe got jammed, even though swanage was probably the last Oxfam shop on planet Earth to still be using one of those because all over the rest of world, they have been deemed easy to break into and unreliable. Meaning they easily get jammed. If he thinks he’s so smart, maybe he should have been there to do his job in the first place.

Ian proceeded to send an extremely passive aggressive email out to all of the volunteers (myself included) explaining how not to use the key safe. Despite this clearly being aimed at me, instead of addressing me directly, he deemed it acceptable to do it indirectly by way of embarrassing me. When I next saw Ian, he continued to spell out to me ‘how to use the key safe properly’ and went as far as to get somebody else (because clearly it was too complicated for him to do himself) to draw a diagram that correctly demonstrates how to place the key in the safe. Condescending much? Not to mention he spoke over me every time I tried explaining to him it wasn’t my fault. Really nice way to treat someone who pulled extra shifts to cover both Ian due to ‘illness’ and Paul whilst he was also off, as well as being left responsible for training other volunteers on how to use the shop’s new till system. I don’t have to tell you how disrespected, belittled and taken advantage of I felt.

I resided in Paul regarding how Ian made me feel belittled and he assured me he would have a word. 3 weeks passed and I had no follow up regarding the situation whatsoever from Paul or Ian. The only conversation I got from Ian was him trying to talk to me about his diarrhoea and weight issues. Very inappropriate topic to be bringing up in a work environment, or is that just me?

4 days later, the day before I was meant to have a shift, Ian emails me regarding an ‘informal meeting’ which was to be with Paul and myself only. Ian coming to me about this ‘meeting’ even though he’s not involved? Doesn’t make sense if you ask me. The email also went on to say all of my shifts are to be put on hold ‘until this meeting had been had’. He then proceeded to send a follow up email shortly afterwards making comments about my personal life, despite the fact it has nothing to with Ian or my work as a volunteer. It was extremely unprofessional, intrusive and uncalled for.

When I emailed back telling him my only issue was with him and the fact he hasn’t had the decency to address me and apologise for his bullying behaviour and to not make unnecessary comments about my personal life, Ian suddenly decided he had nothing to say for himself. The only response I got was from Paul saying he in fact has not spoken to Ian regarding the situation, stating ‘clearly this isn’t going to work out’ and how ‘it is so unfortunate that things escalate so quickly’. So they’ve opted for negligence and brushing the whole thing under the rug. Absolutely pathetic. It shouldn’t take 3 weeks for any big or small complaint to be addressed; complete incompetence from Paul.

I emailed back requesting to speak to them both in person. No response. These guys clearly do a great job at looking after the people who volunteer their time to help. I then made a formal complaint to the Oxfam HR team and they have also completely ignored me.

All in all, it was a more stressful and demoralising experience in this place than it should have been. As for Ian and Paul, it was like watching Dumb and Dumber trying to run a shop together; both equally pathetic and laughable at the same time.

If you would like to purchase donated goods or give money to charity, please go elsewhere. These people deserve your generosity as much as they deserve their jobs.

Never Again

After 25+ years in the same house we need to divest ourselves of a lot of books. Having weeded out the very old and damage ones I established that Oxfam were the only charity able to take more than a couple of boxes at a time. I got in touch and booked a time slot to drop of quite few books explaining that the books would be bagged up to ensure that each one would be of a manageable weight. On arriving at the appointed time the Assistant Manager was extremely unhelpful and made it as difficult as possible for us. I was spoken to like a naughty and rather stupid schoolgirl, and even told to “look at her” when she spoke. I felt utterly humiliated and left the premises feeling very angry and quite tearful. I appreciate her concern is for the safety of her volunteers but as I am in my mid 70’s I think I too deserve some consideration.
Oxfam have rather a questionable reputation of late and this has been confirmed by this experience. In future if I cannot find another suitable charity to makes donations of unwanted goods then so be it, then it will go to landfill. Such a waste such a shame

Horrible rude discrimination by a volunteer who withheld the property of a customer. After years of shopping at the Oxfam…

(1)After years of shopping at the Oxfam and donating, we were greatly disappointed and shocked when a volunteer staff member at the Kensington High Street branch was rude to a customer recovering from an injury who had been promised a delivery of her purchases worth hundreds of pounds. (2)The rude volunteer got the delivery address wrong then claimed to have spent 45 minutes in Notting Hill (not Campden Hill which was repeated multiple times on the phone). (3) Instead of simply calling when she arrived at the Campden Hill road to drop off the delivery and collect donations the volunteer shockingly stated to an injured and poorly customer who was in pain, "You do realise I am doing you a favour?I am a volunteer. Don't take that attitude."(4) The Oxfam volunteer rudely hung up the phone and failed to deliver the purchased items! (5) Who is this volunteer at Kensington High Street? (6)Can Head Office please find out why this female volunteer behaved so horribly like a bully on Thursday 8th June 2023 in contrast to the ethos of Oxfam of Gender Empowerment and please relieve her of her duties if she can't respect customers as human beings? (7) According to The Standard and Guardian, Oxfam already suspended it's and workers for bullying and deprivation of aid and services in some countries. This is an Oxfam volunteer bullying a customer in Kensington! (8) It is completely unacceptable unprofessional behaviour to disappear with a customer's purchases and hang up the phone on a customer who is in pain and recovering from injuries after a manager promised the customer a delivery. (9) Why is the volunteer happy to take the customer's money but not happy to follow up with after sales service and compassion and purchase delivery? (10) Why is an Oxfam volunteer bullying an Oxfam customer and donor?

Rude and hostile staff

I have been shopping at Oxfam for years and I have even volunteered for them however whenever I go to the Cowley branch I always feel uncomfortable as the staff are unfriendly and cold towards us we always felt as if the volunteer watched me and my sister extra cautiously as if we were going to steal, but I brushed it off until today when we walked it the atmosphere felt hostile we were followed around the shop and at the till whilst paying the cashier tried implying we stole items I emptied my bag and showed her. She did apologise however it upsets me that this isn’t a one off it happens to us constantly which is hurtful as I shop there regularly. This experience has ruined my whole day and I feel so angry as it is something that happens every time me and my sister go in.

I didn't want to have to complain…

I didn't want to leave a less than 5-star reivew about a charity shop on TrustPilot but I've experienced such a succession of unhappy shopping experiences on-line with Oxfam that I feel compelled to warn others, and also hopefully prompt Oxfam to improve. Many of their books and other items are very over-priced compared to the general secondary market such as eBay and other second hand book sites; but that's not the main issue since you can always just not buy (though it's very important to know NOT to assume that Oxfam's pricing is fair). What's shocking is how often defects aren't mentioned in the description or shown in the images provided in the ad listing. I've just received a damaged book which wasn't even the same edition as that shown in the listing photo. Also, the packaging is often very inadequate: I've received numerous items badly bumped and damaged. It seems to depend on the branch and individual volunteer working there: some of their individual branches are great, but I recommend you simply don't necessarily expect your item to arrive well packed or be as in good a condition as described. One big redeeming feature, and it's an important one, is that Oxfam's customer services are very good (Debbie and Craig particularly so, thank you both!) so if you have a problem, they should be able to help.

Newsletter

I like Oxfam, I've spent blood sweat and tears in my local one as a volunteer for 15 years.

However.

There's new management and company policies happening that are bothering me.

All volunteers were asked to sign up for what we were told is a newsletter.

However, it's not a newsletter at all.

Instead we've all got something that's far more insidious.

On it is section asking for interests and hobbies (I understand why we they'd possibly need that) but then it goes on to ask for health issues, mental health issues, and access to personal social media accounts.

I can sort of, maybe, understand that if we are employees..

But as a volunteer, much less a long standing volunteer, I find that utterly out of order.

Not only that, with the new management change the long standing volunteers are being made to feel they/we are no longer respected by head office.

I've never said this before, but if you want to volunteer your time with Oxfam, please do, but be extremely aware that, to head office, you are not even a number.

Overpriced books

I’m prepared to bend a little for a good cause but just a little research reveals how over priced books are on the Oxfam website, and this is in comparison to PBFA booksellers who usually factor in at least doubling what they acquired the book for. They may be rare first editions, they may be antiquarian, but I’m yet to buy a book on your website because I can find them somewhere else for much less, which shows your asking prices aren’t even fair.

If you're in a hurry, don't donate to Oxfam cards

Ordered cards on 14th April, called today 25th April as they have not arrived and they are needed by 30th April. Cards are processed separately and even though I got an email on 16th saying they had been dispatched, they actually didn't get posted until 19th and by standard second post. Spoke to Oxfam and they are sending out another set today by first class post (the only reason they got two stars instead of one). If you're in a hurry don't donate to Oxfam cards.

UPDATE - it is now 22 days since I made this order and neither the original set of cards nor the replacement set have arrived. Don't expect anything fast from Oxfam. Would recommend donating elsewhere as Oxfamshop deliveries are non existent.
