London Spine Unit - Back and Neck Pain Clinic Omdömen 

I feel that I have my life back! A total of 7 years of back pain with last 3 years pain increasing and able to do less I finally managed to get an MRI scan which showed degenerative disc in L5 S1. No treatment options offered via NHS so I researched Consultants who may be able to help.
Mr Akmal at the London Spine Unit came up with degenerative disc one of his specialisms. I sent my scans and Mr Akmal explained all options. I did not feel pressured to have an operation at all. Written information sent on all options for me to make informed decision. I opted to have spinal fusion and although day case felt initially optimistic it is much better to be at home (or hotel overnight) than in a hospital bed. Keep moving is key to recovery.
All the staff I have met have been friendly and professional. Easy to contact and from initial contact to operation was just over 2 weeks - although I could have waited if I wanted to.
7 weeks on, I can now sleep at night with no pain, can bend and twist.

I saw Dr. Akmal for lower back pain. I've had the pain for 10+ years with spasms and sciatic pain during that time. I did tons of physio and all sorts of different exercises to try and build up the muscle, but I could never get far enough before a spasm would come along.

I had two rounds of the steroids and they did the trick in allowing me to keep working out consistently for 5 months! I built up the strength to hold up my spine and keep myself spasm free.

Dr. Akmal is really good in not just jumping to a fusion or other serious surgery. After looking at my MRI is said I'm not a candidate for those surgeries and that's the kind of thing you want to hear from a back surgeon! Honest feedback!

I couldn't be happier with the treatment and only wish I went years ago instead of thinking this is a last resort.

One negative, he's not exactly a people person so he typically didn't greet me before my procedures or see me afterward. It's a little strange but everyone else around him is super nice and caring so it made up for it. But, a note if you like a doctor to be super involved and take time with you then this isn't the doctor for you. If you can look past this knowing it may be the effective treatment for you, GO FOR IT!

Having suffered for 6 months going through the NHS, after having my MRI scan I decided to look at private options.

Mo Akmal he is my hero! The NHS gave me no hope whatsoever, I honestly thought I would have to deal with the fact that I couldnt stand up straight, or walk properly for atleast another year, being told 64 weeks average waiting time for an operation IF the NHS would let me have one.

Mr Akmal gave me an initial assessment over video call (I couldnt get to him so he accommodated a time that suited me and via video)

Immediately I was put at ease, Mr Akmal was 100% confident he could resolve my issues, with an extremely low risk. This was a run of the mill operation for him, he had even had it done himself, so I was taken aback and felt like my life would literally be sorted.

I was booked in for the operation within two weeks (A longer waiting time than normally due to holidays)

Honestly, money well spent, I have been transformed and getting better by the day. The team were excellent, I can not portray in words how transformative this operation was.

Mr Mo Akmal performed a cervical disk replacement for me about three months ago. This was done on an outpatient basis, which I found very effective, and I was grateful I was discharged on the same night to recover in the comfort of my own home.
The facilities at the London Spine Unit are impeccable and the clinic is run in a professional manner. Staff are all very respectful, compassionate and efficient.
Mr Akmal sought more conventional treatment options for me and only suggested invasive surgery when all traditional routes had been exhausted.
The surgery has been a great success and I have regained full strength in my right arm, which had been heavily impacted by the prolapsed disk. I have had regular check ups since, and the healing is progressing well.
I wholeheartedly recommend the facility and its staff. I felt in very safe hands.

I had been suffering from chronic lower back and right leg pain since October 2021. I had visited numerous chiropractors and osteopaths, I was eventually referred by my GP for an MRI Scan in October 2022, as I was unable to stand or walk for more then 60 seconds without excruciating pain. The MRI showed a huge disc bulge L5/S1 but also a deformity in my lower spine. I was referred by the NHS to a private consultant who told me I would need two major surgeries at the same time to correct this issue, which would cost £35k and also be quite high risk. As an extremely nervous patient, I thought it would be best to get a second opinion as I was absolutely terrified! I contacted the London Spine Unit and Dr. Mo Akmal, the miracle worker put me at ease from the first consultation and offered me a different solution in the form of a microdisectomy and decompression, less risk, better success rates, day surgery, This was a third of the price I was initially quoted by my previous Consultant. I self funded so this was an added bonus, although I would of paid anything at this point due to the amount of pain. I must admit I was a little unsure that everything cold be so simple, as I had been in pain for so long and had got to the point where I thought nothing would work. I woke up after my surgery and was on my feet within an hour and I felt like a new woman! No exaggeration, it felt truly like a miracle! The team and staff are excellent. It has been 3 weeks since my op and I am walking around as if I never had an issues. Big thanks to Dr. Akmal and Dr Locke for the excellent care and surgery and also a big thanks to Dr Khalil Ahmed the Anaesthetist and all other members of staff. I was referred to Mr. Akmal following continued spinal issues. I had previously had a fusion in my neck (C5/6) about 15 years ago and was now suffering again. Over more than 9 months, my level of pain and disability had increased to an unbearable level. I now live in Malta and the surgeons here could not help as the situation was too complex due to the previous operation. There were issue both above and below the original fusion. Mr. Akmal and the team at the London Spine Clinic were amazing and the level of care was very high. Following the initial consultations, The continual flow of information, both before and after the operation was superb. I felt very confident that I was in good hands. This was proved to be correct and Mr. Akmal performed a double operation in one process. He fitted a prosthetic disc above the original fusion and performed another fusion directly below. The operation was done in one day and the pain relief was immediate. The level of follow up support was second to none and the team were caring and attentive. Dr. Lok was very good and reassuring, being happy to see or talk to me whenever I needed. Some weeks later, any residual pain is just about gone, and I am back to living a normal life again. Having suffered very bad sciatica for more than 3 months, I went along to the London Spine Unit, and from the diagnosis all the way through to the operation, the treatment I received was excellent.I really do highly recommend the London Spine Unit for any spine related problems. 5 stars.

If you have any anxiety over back surgery of any shape or form dispel all of it now because you’re in the right hands with Mr Mo Akmal, I had massive degeneration in my lower back he put six screws and 1 discs into my back
and two months later I’m completely fine. He takes his work very seriously and that is what impressed me the most

At the consultation, he took time to go over the diagnosis clearly and we discussed the treatments options carefully. The surgery itself went smoothly. I was really impressed that they could do such complicated surgery as a day case. My anaesthetic was great as I felt no nausea or pain at all afterwards. I was called the day after the surgery to make sure everything was ok.

I was lucky enough to spend my work experience at the Harley Street clinic, and it was sensational to see everything they do. Everyone on the team works so hard to provide such a high level of care for every single one of the patients that walk through the door. From what I saw at the clinic, they offer an enormous amount of support because they genuinely care about everyone's well-being. I was diagnosed with lumbar stenosis after experiencing increasing pain in both legs. An MRI and consultation carried out at short notice confirmed this.

Mr Akmal recommended that a spacer should be inserted in my lower back to correct the problem and release the nerves from the narrowing caused by stenosis.

The operation was conducted very professionally and without pain. After the first two weeks the pain started to subside as expected. After 4 weeks I was completely back to normal.

The result is exceptionally good and I feel renewed, with no pain whatsoever and a regained posture, ready to resume a normal life.

My mother was in absolute agony for more than 3 months due to sciatica. It just came out of nowhere and took her out of action. From working full time she went straight to being bed bound and unable to carry out simplest of actions.The pain was 9/10 and she was bed bound for those three months. Multiple trips to A&E and GP and they wouldn't class it as an emergency therefore they wouldn't do anything about it other than upgrading the painkillers which did next to nothing for my mother. I couldn't bear to watch my mother sleeping on A&E bench in pain for 7 hours, just to be told by doctors that she wouldn't be kept in. I remember her joining her hands and begging the doctors to stop the pain which broke my heart. I then started doing research on google and London spine unit came up with Dr Mo AKMAL's profile and review.

First meeting with Dr AKMAL was via ZOOM as my mother was bed bound. Dr AKMAL spoke to me and my mom and told us that this is nothing to worry about and that the pain would be 100% gone.Dr AKMAL assured us to visit the hospital so he could physically inspect my mother and give us the best solution. One trip to the london spine unit and Dr AKMAL advised us that the best solution would be to carry out Minimally invasive disectomy. Dr AKMAL advised that due to my mother being bed bound for a while, steroid injection might not give the result that my mother wishes. Dr AKMAL was very confident and showed us some videos from other patients who had gone through the same ordeal. The biggest thing i noticed between before and after was the smile on the patients face. Dr AKMAL was constantly assuring my mother throughout the meeting that he would take care of her pain and gave her 100% confidence that the result would be delivered.He promised her that she would be walking pain free the same day after the operation.

Before the operation Dr GURUNG was consulted multiple times and he also was very helpful.

Right after the surgery, as Dr AKMAL promised, my mother was walking and the biggest thing was that the pain was gone. My mother had forgotten to smile for three months and there i saw her smiling again. Dr AKMAL and Dr GURUNG gave us brilliant aftercare and informed us that just give them a ring if there was any issue. Its been several weeks now and my mother is heading towards complete recovery without any issues. The pain is completely gone and anyone who is reading this going through the same horrible sciatica pain you must come and see Dr AKMAL. My 81 year old mother who has retired in Ghana was suffering from severe lower back pain so a local surgeon put her through discectomy with hardware (spine screws). The procedure was essentially botched, with one screw breaching her spinal canal resulting in extreme pain; unable to walk, pins and needles and numbness in the left leg. The hardware subsequently had become infected and loosened as a result. Her life after this surgery was the worse she has ever experienced in all her life. She had no doubt that she was eventually to die from the infection and pain. Fortunately, through diligent search, we found Mr Akmal and his team at The UK Spine Centre. She had a zoom consultation and with a ready MRI and CT scan, Mr Akmal knew exactly how to have her back to fitness and a better quality of life. She travelled to England on 26 March 2022 and had the surgery on 11 April 2022. It was a day-case. It lasted no more than 1 hour 30 minutes. She was on my feet within 2 hours pain free - still pain free 5 weeks on! To her this is simply a miracle ! She is grateful to Jehovah God for Mr Akmal and his team - thoroughly professional bunch at the top of their game. No one deserves to suffer the pain she experienced for two years. From the first phone call, the team at London Spine have been amazing. I had severe symptoms following an L4/L5 disc injury from playing sports and had complete foot drop. Mr Akmal and his team treated the situation incredibly sensitively, as I had risk of permanent damage. The whole process was so quick, from initial consultation to operation was about 96 hours. On the day of the operation, the nurses couldn’t have been more helpful, attentive and calming. The surgery was flawless, with absolutely zero pain from the operation following. I am now 8 weeks from a bi-lateral discectomy and dynamic stabilisation procedure and have regained full use of my leg and toes, with a complete range of motion also. Mr Akmal’s aftercare has been first class, with regular calls from his team in the 2 weeks following the surgery, to the final consultation and discharge.

I had a massive bulging disk on my back compressing my nerve for three years. It caused me excruciating pain and almost left me disabled. I was on both crutches and completely homebound due to the severity of pain and mobility limitations.

I had my lumber surgery two weeks ago and walked out of hospital within a few hours pain free on my right leg that was almost paralysing prior to surgery. The disk was shaved off releasing the nerve completely.

Two days after surgery I had excruciating pain on my head that is unexplained as I had CT scan and MRI which were all fine. Dr Akmal has suggested it could be from the anaesthetic.

I am extremely grateful to Dr Akmal and his very welcoming and cari g team. I would highly recommend his clinic as I have had excellent recovery.
