I strongly advise against booking with Indie Campers. My experience has been a total nightmare. One week before our family vacation, Indie Campers cancelled our booking due to "logistical constraints," despite the reservation being confirmed and paid for 4.5 months in advance.

The cancellation caused absolute chaos, forcing us to scramble for last-minute flights and accommodation. While they eventually processed a refund for the van rental, they explicitly promised to reimburse the €563.96 in non-refundable flight costs I incurred due to their mismanagement. That was months ago. Despite countless emails, "highest priority" escalations, and endless assurances from their support agents that the transfer is "in progress," I am still out of pocket for these flights.

They are quick to take your money but go completely silent when it comes to honoring their commitments to reimburse costs they forced upon you. Save yourself the stress, the wasted time, and the financial anxiety—book with a company that values its customers and actually honors its agreements.

Our rental of a motorhome from Indie Campers ended with a cost of €19,000 and a hellish vacation. This despite having purchased their highest "Premium Insurance”. If that’s not enough to deter you from doing business with these people, here’s a detailed breakdown.

We rented a Motorhome from Indie Campers with their full Premium Insurance, between 19/7-2/8/25.

Be advised, THIS COMPANY’S INSURANCE IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM!
You will be led to believe you have purchased a comprehensive insurance. De facto you’ll be driving without insurance, and YOU COULD BE LIABLE FOR THE COST OF THE ENTIRE RENTED VEHICLE.

Their Premium Insurance (their highest-level insurance, which we took at a substantial extra cost) states “your excess will be limited to €199” – this is a blatant and misleading lie!

Only on pickup of the vehicle we were given full access to the rental documentation:
(At this point if you decide not to go ahead with the rental you will lose your booking fee)
1. The Rental Agreement – a 29,000-word document (in Italian I might add)
2. The Insurance document and T&C’s - 5,000-words.
3. Indie Campers Specific T&C’s –14,000-words.
Buried within these documents are exclusions upon exclusions to the Insurance policy.
These exclusions render your insurance and excess as none existent.

Which is to say, you will be driving without insurance, and will be liable for the full damage costs from anything to practically everything!

During pickup they demanded we block 500€ on the credit card for insurance purposes, given the excess was stated at 199€ we found that a bit odd but proceeded nonetheless.

During a trip our campervan was involved in an accident and sustained some damage to the upper sleeper cabin.

The Premium Insurance stated we were due to receive "road side assistance and a replacement vehicle"….
We never received any roadside assistance nor a replacement vehicle!

This despite lengthy WhatsApp correspondence with their Indie Campers HQ, who claimed they had no available replacement vehicles.
Searches on their website revealed plenty of availability.
We basically had to park the van for the remainder of the trip and our trip was over.
This wasn’t half our saga with this company.
When returning the vehicle, they stated there is no insurance for this damage, the excess is irrelevant.
We were handed a bill of 19,000€.

Despite having blocked only 500€ on the AMEX CC at the time of the pickup, they somehow managed to access the card and take a sum of 17,000€ from our credit card. We have now started a dispute process over it.
It is apparent this company’s business strategy is to lure in customers with lower rental prices, mislead them to believe they are driving with a comprehensive insurance, and then pursuing the ones unfortunate enough to have had an accident with insane damage bills.

DO YOURSELVES A FAVOR, AVOID INDIE CAMPERS AND THEIR INSURANCE SCAM!
Rent anywhere else.

Anfang Juni 2025 2x Besichtigungstermine vereinbart, zum Kauf eines gebrauchten Wohnmobils. Jedes Mal war das entsprechende Fahrzeug nicht da.
Dann ein anderes Wohnmobil vor Ort besichtigt und gekauft.
Der Vertrag kam sofort per Mail, direkt unterschrieben und Kaufsumme überwiesen.
Ab da keine weiteren Nachrichten von Indie Campers.
Diverse Schreiben wegen Abholung und Übergabe der Papiere blieben unbeantwortet.
Indie Campers lehnten jede Stellungnahme ab, da sie jetzt nicht mehr zuständig wären.
Mit grossem Aufwand nach einem Monat das Fahrzeug mit nur 1 Schlüssel, Zulassung und „TÜV“-Papieren (von Jan. 2025) über Umwegen erhalten.
2-ter Schlüssel, die „Transparente Fahrzeughistorie mit allen Rechnungen“, „Generalinspektion Bescheinigung“ und Klimaanlage fehlen bis heute (Feb.2026) immer noch.
Notgedrungen das Fahrzeug zu einer Vertragswerkstatt gebracht.
Die haben die Hände über den Kopf geschlagen. Rep. Angebot über EUR 5.800,-- erhalten. Das Fahrzeug war nur bedingt fahrbereit, nicht „TÜV“ fähig und war noch nie in seinem Leben bei einer Vertragswerkstatt.
Sogar Garantiereparaturen (Rückrufe) wurden nicht ausgeführt.
Meine Eigenkontrolle am KFZ ergab noch Schäden an der Bordelektrik, Wasserversorgung, Sitzen, Vorhängen usw. in Höhe von ca. EUR 3.000,00
Indie Campers per Mail und Einschreiben angeschrieben, keine Antwort.
Nachfrist zur Mängelbehebung gesetzt, keine Antwort.
Bonitätsauskunft über Indie Campers Eschborn eingeholt = Katastrophe.
Nach nochmaligem Aufruf zur Mängelbeseitigung die Mängel in Eigenregie von der Vertragswerkstatt beheben lassen.
Nach über ca. 200 Seiten Briefe und Mail an Indie Campers hat sich am 20. August 2025 eine Person per Mail bei mir gemeldet.
Diesem habe ich wieder alle meine Probleme geschrieben.
Antwort: Keinerlei Schuld von Indie Campers, somit kein Geld (auch nicht den fehlenden Zündschlüssel und fehlenden Papiere und Klimaanlage).
Rechtsanwalt genommen, Antwort wie vor von Indie Campers.
Wieder div. Schreiben hin und her, immer mit Ablehnung jeder Schuld.
Plötzlich eine Frage von Indie Campers zu einem Vergleich.
Habe einem Vergleich zugestimmt mit Verzicht auf jegliche Eintragung in entspr. Foren.
Die nächste Mail von Indie Campers ist wieder eine Ablehnung von jeglichen Zahlungen.
Habe Indie Campers wieder sehr detailliert den Kaufablauf geschildert.
Indie Campers hat dann Anfang 2026 Wochen einer Vergleichszahlung zugestimmt, zahlt aber nicht.
Wieder Bonitätsauskunft über Indie Campers Eschborn eingeholt = immer noch große Katastrophe.
Meines Erachtens sind sie zahlungsunfähig.
Somit ist absolute Vorsicht bei Geschäften mit ihnen. Glaubt ihnen nichts, auch nicht den Verträgen.

The customer service is outrageous.

Indie Campers stole my deposit. And they'll do the same to you.

I rented a campervan from Indie Campers for a family trip, including an extra baby seat advertised as suitable for children aged 0–3 years. Upon pickup, the only seats available were for children up to 75 cm or above 125 cm — completely unsafe for my 1.5-year-old (around 85 cm).

Despite explaining the safety risk multiple times, the local team was unable (and unwilling) to provide any proper solution. After almost two hours of discussion, I was told I could buy a new seat myself and would be refunded — something I have in writing. However, no compatible seat could be found anywhere, so I returned the van the next day without using it.

Even with clear evidence and documentation — including their written acknowledgment and photos of the issue — Indie Campers refused any refund. Instead, they claimed I had “changed my mind,” which is simply untrue.

What’s most disappointing is not just the service failure, but the total lack of responsibility or willingness to listen. When a company cannot provide basic safety for a child and then blames the customer instead of solving the issue, that says everything about their values.

I rented a camper from Indie Campers for a road trip from Málaga to Barcelona. The check-in in Málaga was friendly, and the staff seemed helpful. The trip started off great — until day 4.

While parked on a main street in Tarragona for just 1.5 hours, the camper was broken into. Thieves pried open the side window, which was only secured with four cheap plastic latches. These were partially damaged in the break-in, and all of our personal belongings were stolen.

Initially, Indie Campers’ customer support was responsive and friendly. However, at check-out in Barcelona, I was told I would be charged €914 for the window — because it was considered “broken.” I was informed that Indie Campers only uses three damage categories: “broken,” “scratch,” or “missing” — meaning even minor latch damage is automatically considered a full break and billed at maximum cost.

To be clear: the window itself was not shattered or missing. Only the plastic latches were damaged — and replacements cost around €50 online. It’s absolutely unreasonable to charge €914 for that.

What’s worse: after taking the money from my credit card, Indie Campers stopped responding entirely. I’ve sent multiple follow-up emails — no reply, no explanation, no support. Just silence.

Summary:
• Poor vehicle security (cheap, vulnerable window latches)
• No nuanced or fair damage assessment
• Zero flexibility or understanding after a theft
• No transparency
• Customer support ghosted me after taking the money

I cannot recommend Indie Campers. If something goes wrong, you’re on your own — and you might be left with a massive, unjustified bill.

Unsere Erfahrung mit Indie Campers war leider katastrophal. Wir hatten in Sydney ein Fahrzeug gemietet, das aufgrund eines gefährlichen technischen Mangels (falsch eingebaute Batterie, Austritt giftiger Gase) sofort ausgetauscht werden musste.

Trotz einwandfreier Rückgabe wurde uns nachträglich ein Schaden in Rechnung gestellt, den wir nicht verursacht haben. Ein konkreter Beleg, wann und wo der Schaden entstanden sein soll, wurde uns verweigert. Auf dem Schadensfoto fehlt sogar das Nummernschild – eine eindeutige Zuordnung zum von uns gemieteten Fahrzeug ist nicht möglich.

Uns wurde mitgeteilt, dass die Firma bis zu 30 Tage nach Rückgabe Schäden berechnen könne – selbst wenn das Fahrzeug in dieser Zeit von Mitarbeitenden bewegt wird. Sollte dabei ein Mitarbeiter eine Delle ins Fahrzeug fahren, wird Indie Campers sie euch trotzdem in Rechnung stellen.

Eine Einsicht in die verwendete Preisliste wurde ebenfalls abgelehnt. Für eine kleine Beule wurde ein Betrag von über 3.000 € verlangt – ohne transparente Aufschlüsselung.

Wir können nach dieser Erfahrung nur dringend davon abraten, bei Indie Campers zu buchen. Falls ihr bereits gebucht habt: dokumentiert wirklich alles (Fotos, Übergabeprotokolle, Kommunikation). Für uns war es eine sehr teure und frustrierende Erfahrung.

Meine Freundin hat einen Camper bei Indie Campers gemietet und den gesamten Mietpreis per Online-Banking bezahlt. Da sie keine Kreditkarte hatte, habe ich (eine andere Person!) nur eine separate Gasflasche mit meiner Kreditkarte gezahlt. Trotzdem wurde meine Kreditkarte später ohne meine Zustimmung für einen angeblichen Schaden belastet – obwohl ich nicht Vertragspartner war und auch keine Kaution gestellt habe.

Besonders unseriös: Der zunächst kalkulierte Schaden wurde ohne nachvollziehbare Begründung plötzlich auf die maximale Selbstbeteiligung hochgesetzt – genau auf den höchsten Betrag, den Indie Campers vertraglich absichern wollte. Eine transparente Schadenskalkulation oder eine nachvollziehbare Aufstellung gibt es nicht – alles basiert auf einer internen, nicht einsehbaren Preisliste.

Auf Rückfragen wird nur pauschal geantwortet, echte Aufklärung bleibt aus. Es entsteht der Eindruck, dass Indie Campers willkürlich Belastungen vornimmt, um möglichst viel einzutreiben.

Mein Fazit:
Ich kann Indie Campers leider überhaupt nicht empfehlen. Wer hier mietet, riskiert unfaire Abrechnungen und intransparente Forderungen!

Gerade in diesem Moment habe ich den Camper wieder storniert. Gerade noch rechtzeitig, denn die Stornofrist ist Null und 50% wären futsch gewesen. Aber der Grund des Stornos war ein anderer:

Die Seite hat tolle Angebote und ist übersichtlich, solange man nicht buchen will oder schon gebucht hat. Indie-Campers ist eine amerikanische Firma, die Internetseite ist in sehr schlechtem Deutsch, teilweise stehen mitten im Satz einzelne Wörter, manchmal auch ganze Sätze, auf Englisch.

Die Verifizierung des Personalausweises hat nach 8 Versuchen nicht geklappt, obwohl die Fotos hell, scharf und lesbar waren. Die dann auf Anraten von Indie-Campers erforderliche Kontaktaufnahme scheiterte, weil man einen Grund angeben musste. Ich wollte aber weder Partner werden, noch eine Beschwerde während der Reise melden. Also konnte ich das Formular nicht absenden. Toll.

In den FAQ´s steht ein fürchterlicher Kauderwelsch, der niemandem weiterhilft. Auch die Auswahl der Stornogründe erfolgt nur in Englisch. Nach erfolgter Stornierung bekam ich eine Mail, dass die Vermieterin storniert hätte. Diese hatte meine Anfrage aber noch gar nicht gelesen.

Alles in allem ein Bild, das durch die anderen Bewertungen hier gestützt wird. Schade für denjenigen, der seinen Camper hier vermieten will. So wird er wenig Freude und noch weniger Einnahmen haben.

Ich kann nur raten: Immer erst bei Trustpilot nachsehen, da erspart man sich eine menge Ärger.

They cancel one day prior without any real solutions, they just don't care. Worst customer service I've ever experienced. Now It's not clear if I will receive my money back.

Vorsicht bei diesem Anbieter.

Ich laufe nun seit 4 Wochen dem Indie Campers Support hinterher und meine Kaution wird nicht wieder freigegeben.

Beim Checkout in Hamburg wurde uns nach ca. 1 Stunde Prüfung des Campers gesagt, das dieser in Ordnung sei und wir das Geld innerhalb von 5-7 Tagen zurückerhalten werden.
Nach 8 Tagen haben wir den Support angeschrieben und da wurde uns dann gesagt, dass es bis zu 10 Werktage dauern kann.
Nach weiteren 3 Tagen wurde der Support erneut Kontaktiert, dabei wurde dann gesagt das es zwischen 10 - 15 Werktage dauert, meistens aber schon früher wieder da ist.
Heute ist der 18 Werktag nach Checkout vergangen und das Geld ist immer noch durch Indie Campers geblockt.

Nach ca. einer halben Stunde mit dem Support und dem Nachweis sämtlicher Buchungsdaten wurde mir gesagt dass das Geld bereits freigegeben wurde.
Weiterhin wird das Geld jedoch auf meinem Konto als vorgemerkt durch Indie Campers geblockt.

I have been chasing Indie Campers support for 4 weeks now and my deposit is not being released.

When we checked out in Hamburg, after about 1 hour of checking the camper, we were told that it was OK and that we could get the money back within 5-7 days.

After 8 days we wrote to support and were told that it could take up to 10 working days.

After another 3 days we contacted support again and were told that it would take between 10-15 working days, but that it would usually be back sooner.

Today is the 18th working day after the checkout and the money is still blocked by Indie Campers.

After about half an hour with support and proof of all booking data, I was told that the money had already been released.

However, the money is still blocked in my account as a pending request by Indie Campers.

Initially, we paid for both warm water/heating and Wi-Fi for our 20-day trip in November. Unfortunately, these amenities were unavailable for the entire duration of our stay, causing significant inconvenience, especially given the cold weather. This forced us to adapt our plans, as we needed to find alternative accommodations, such as campgrounds and Airbnb stays, to facilitate remote work during the initial days.

Additionally, we encountered internal issues with the camper, including broken windows and loose screws, which required our attention to prevent potential complications. Despite our best efforts, these repairs became a necessity.

Towards the end of our trip, we experienced a minor incident that resulted in damage to the top of the camper. While we understand that such accidents can happen, the repair costs are typically in the range of $150-$200 at any regular car repair shop. To our surprise, the company charged us $2000 without providing any explanation, justification, or breakdown of why the cost was significantly higher.

Since November, we've been attempting to resolve these issues through email correspondence. Unfortunately, we have not received a satisfactory response or clarification from the company. This experience has left us deeply disappointed, as we feel that we were treated unfairly and subjected to unreasonably high charges.

1. Hired Atlas 5 from their Frankfurt depot.
2. Damages recorded in the contract before start of trip - 8 items. Depot staff claimed shortage of staff/ time and lack of spares/ support from Company to fix the Camper before delivery to customer.
3. On road failures - 15 items. Had to get some repairs done at own cost. Bills sent but no refund received.
4. Camper returned in ‘AS WAS’ condition after proper cleaning. The vehicle was checked by 3 men for 2 hrs and accepted with ‘No Damage’.
5. Eleven (11) days after return, Indie Campers raises a Damage Report to claim the entire deposit. They show photo of a barely visible crack below the rear bumper.
6. The already damaged bumper was recorded in contract - ‘Exterior body rear bumper central perforation / part missing /mounting broken.
7. Vacationers with similar experience with Indie Campers - Alfarero, Lesley, Stephanie Cartwright, Lee Booth, Nicole Horan, Travelling Couple, Sammy, Estimado and Liebe. Many more with other complaints.
8. Mr Zuni of Indie Campers accepted the faults but they have neither refunded the Deposit charged for fake damage nor compensated for on road failures.
