“A Powerhouse Publisher with Strong Curation — But Not Perfect” HarperCollins Publishers

is one of the most recognizable names in the global publishing world, and its reputation is largely well-earned. The company consistently delivers books that are professionally edited, attractively designed, and widely accessible to readers across genres. From literary fiction to commercial thrillers, memoirs to self-help, their catalog shows both scale and range.

One of HarperCollins’ biggest strengths is editorial quality. Their books usually feel polished and thoughtfully produced, which builds reader trust. They also do a strong job of promoting major titles, helping books reach a global audience through effective marketing and distribution networks.

Another positive is their willingness to publish both established voices and emerging authors, which keeps their catalog fresh. For readers like you who enjoy discovering new content ideas for channels or review pages, that variety is valuable.

Despite their strengths, HarperCollins can sometimes feel overly commercial in selection. Like many big publishers, they often prioritize marketability over experimental or unconventional writing. This can make parts of their catalog feel safe rather than bold.

Publishers who support hateful authors

I will never support HarperCollins publishing as long as they support & publish authors like Victoria Aveyard. It’s not necessarily the things that she has said but it’s the hatred she has for fans who have a different opinion. Normally I’m someone that can put political disagreements to the side but she has lost it. The way she has treated fans who have supported her writing journey over the years is baffling. On her public profile she calls fans who disagree with her the “dog pile.” I cannot support a woman who reduces previous fans to such a disrespectful term all because they have a differing opinion. This is just one of many examples. I will not support any publishing company that condones bullying, harassment, and hate towards others. You’ve lost my business because of her.

HarperCollins is one of the biggest and…

HarperCollins is one of the biggest and most respected publishing companies in the world. They have a rich history of publishing both timeless classics and modern bestsellers. Some of my favorite authors, like Agatha Christie and J.R.R. Tolkien, have their works published under HarperCollins.

I really appreciate the wide range of books they produce—fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature, and even religious texts. Their quality of printing and editing is usually excellent, and the variety of genres means there’s something for every reader.

One thing I’ve noticed, however, is that some of their editions (especially international ones) can be a little expensive compared to other publishers. Still, the content and quality often justify the price.

Overall, HarperCollins is a trustworthy, diverse, and high-quality publisher that has shaped modern reading culture. I would definitely recommend books published by them to any book lover.

Complaint

I placed an order online with Harper collins nearly £100 for 14 books for my partner, I placed the order on the 28th July 2025 and I had to email them to chase it up as my shop app said it was still being processed it took over a week to receive and only because I complained, but still missing a book

Zero stars - Avoid

Zero stars. I didn’t check reviews before ordering - I thought of HC as a trusted company.
Similar to the below reviews - they are selling out of stock items without communicating, no updates and no apologies but very happy to take your money for products they do not have available to sell. It’s now two months since I placed my order and I still don’t have all items.

Order Elsewhere. Collins are worse than useless.

After order acknowledgement - nothing. Their tracking system came up with “Oops something went wrong”. Sent an email that was not even acknowledged. Did get someone on the phone. The book is out of stock and no idea when delivery will be made but not before Christmas. Utterly hopeless customer service. Order elsewhere.

Let down at Christmas

Ordered my son’s Christmas present on 3rd December. It’s now 17th and I have chased it up and have been told it’s out of stock with no restock date. Why have I had to chase this? Why did they accept an order if they didn’t have stock. Appalling customer service. Have been totally let down. Avoid.

Pathetic company

Pathetic company. I bought one of HarperCollins Avon Publications books. Toward the end of the book, every 5th page or so was from a different book of the same series. When I complained about it via BBB they asked for my address, and promised to send me a replacement, so I marked the issue as resolved. They never sent it.

Terrible terrible online shopping…

Terrible terrible online shopping experience. They accepted and confirmed my order and only when I emailed to check in about it two weeks later did they tell me they have no stock of the item. They took my money when they didn't have my product and sent me no updates on the order. Probably the worst online shipping experience I've ever had.

One month to get a refund, had to threaten legal action

Companies like HarperCollins exist to remind us why it is so hard to give up buying anything from Amazon. I've never had such an experience with a company before.

Like many, I wanted to shop elsewhere to kick an Amazon habit. As a big Tolkien book collector, going straight to the source seemed like a great idea. What followed was a month of phone calls and emails trying to get my money back from them. In the end, I had to quote UK consumer regulations at them to force a refund through.

I purchased 13 books in September, 7 of them arrived damaged. To receive a refund for them, HarperCollins asked for photographic evidence - which I guess is pretty standard. After providing this, they then delayed a refund saying they wanted to internally investigate and wanted to collect the items. I was fed up of them delaying and just wanted to cancel the entire order, so they could collect all the books and give me all my money back.

After requesting this, they said they'd only issue a refund if I then provided more photographs of the books with the front covers from each (all 13) ripped off, essentially destroying the books.

I found this pretty abhorrent. To get a refund, I had to destroy already damaged books just in case I attempted to profit by selling on damaged books for pennies. Not even allowed to hand them into a charity shop or do what I wanted with them. No, HarperCollins must know that if I can't have the books then no one can.

After refusing to destroy books, I informed them again that I instead wanted to cancel the entire transaction, returning, not destroying, all the books (damaged and new) for a full refund, vowing never to deal with such a strange book company that wanted to destroy books to hand out refunds.

A collection was arranged by HarperCollins, and DPD collected the items without a fuss. I was then informed that a refund may take 3 weeks for some reason. I waited and had to contact them again. They stated that a refund would not be issued until they had the items.

What followed was days of back and forth about them internally investigating where the items were, even though I already had proof that I had returned the items. They legally had to already give me a refund and they were refusing to.

After quoting regulations to them, a refund was finally given to me weeks after I had the courier collect them. This was a transaction that took ONE MONTH from me getting the items to getting my refund, something that would have been sorted by Amazon in a 5 minute online chat.

I can't recommend enough that you stay away from this archaic and dodgy company. A company that makes you jump through hoops, doesn't return phone calls, takes days to respond to emails, and acts like it's the first time you've spoken to them each time you call. A company that only offers refunds if they aren't losing out on anything in the process. I've never dealt with a company like this and will never buy any books from them again. A company that doesn't know consumer regulations and thinks they have to do a full internal investigation before giving a customer their money back, a customer who had given them money and had no items to show for it.

Save the hassle and just stick to the Bezos machine. HarperCollins are just not worth your time and money.

HarperCollins has combative and dismissive customer service

I reached out about a pre-order bonus to a book recently published. The pre-order item was falsely advertised by the author, who said if his book was bought within the pre-order period, then the book would come with a signed nameplate. But there was no mention of a form that had to be filled out to redeem the nameplate. I've never heard of a pre-order item that didn't come with the per-ordered item.

So, I reached out to HarperCollins to inquire about it, and ask if they would do another round of nameplates as long as people submitting it had proof of their pre-order. And, I only received unhelpful, combative, and dismissive responses. This publisher's customer service needs serious help in mannerism and compromise.

Misprints, poor quality, silent customer service

Harper Collins sold a poorly printed copy of Ribsy by Beverly Cleary to the school book fair. Pages are outrageously out of order and some chapters are missing from the text entirely. I notified them of this misprint a month ago and they have responded with silence. Very disappointed in their casual acceptance of unreadable material.

Harper publishing is a fraud company…

Harper publishing is a fraud company ran by Steve Collins. They destroyed my dreams, future and passion for writing. They published my book and all communication with them cut off because I refused to pay for their nonsense website for 1500.09. This company is heartless.

But unless I am not a true follower of Jesus Christ they will all reap what they have done to many people. I never got my royalty Che is, but they have one coming to them.

Please everyone this is serious this is not a trust worthy company. Do not ever use them for business or professional practices. They are evil 👿 and there’s a place call hell that will burn them all up for the rest of their lives. They are satanist, horrible company.

High price, low quality

This is my first experience with Harper Collins and I can only judge based on this purchase. I bought the deluxe editions of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, but, despite the high price, both books arrived with many quality issues. Harper Collins have recognized that some of the problems I found are present in the most of the books printed.
However, the only thing I got after emailing them for a week, was the link to buy both books again. It has to be a big business, if the customer has to buy such an expensive book twice or more to get a decent copy.
