Writing a book about intelligence work for a general audience while maintaining appropriate discretion about classified material and protecting the identities of individuals who cannot be named publicly is a constraint that most publishers have neither the experience nor the patience to navigate properly. That outcome required skill on both the legal and editorial sides simultaneously and this team demonstrated it throughout. The book has been well received in national security policy circles and among general readers interested in how intelligence work actually functions. That dual reception was the goal and it was achieved.

Wrote this entire book during twelve hour night shifts in an empty office building. Just me, a laptop and the occasional sound of the heating system. Submitted it at six in the morning after a shift ended and went home and slept without thinking about it. Got the call three weeks later while eating breakfast. The empty building where it was written feels like a character in the story now. Quiet places produce loud books sometimes.

My horror is slow and atmospheric rather than visceral and gory. The kind that settles under your skin rather than shocking it. Finding readers for quieter horror requires finding the right communities and the team knew exactly where those communities lived online and off. The book found its people and its people are wonderfully strange and loyal and exactly the audience I wrote it for.

Started writing what I thought was a novel. My editor read fifty pages and said this isn't fiction is it. She was right. It wasn't. Switching to memoir midway through a project is terrifying and she guided that transition with complete confidence. The book is better and more honest for being what it actually was rather than what I was pretending it was.
