Year 4 Core Maths and English at Feltham

This is a live review. I will keep it updated as we go through above course that started in September 2021.

Update October 2021: They provided 45 minutes extra support class for the topics my son was struggling with. Scheduling this was very easy and front desk staff are very polite and helping. I am hoping this will benefit my son.

Regarding point "Every week there is specific teaching content delivered by an expert teacher dealing with maths technique and English comprehension, spelling syntax and grammar." - My son confirms that there is no such session. During these two hours they take multiple tests and explain mistake. It will be really good if along with homework they also mention the topics covered in these 'teaching content'. Also what proportion of 2 hours is spent on test vs 'teaching content' ?

Regarding my comment on franchise model: Current course structure is books based and in absence of proper 'tution' this is very silimar to franchise model.

Regarding "challenging work": For every child there is a limited time available on week days. So to make best out of this time its important to challenge them by quality and not quantity. Maths homework is too much, easy and boring for my son. We find english homework much less but maths takes away most of his time.

Regarding "Marking homework by parents": I accept your point.

Original Review:
At class, pupils work on different workbooks which are checked by teaching assistants. They help pupil individually which is good. But for homework onus is on parents to check 8-10 workbooks and write comments in dairy. These comments are picked up by assistant teachers in next class and they help pupils on any significant difficulties highlighted by parents.

Although this process does help pupils in setting a routine, it has following problems:

1. There are no lessons. This is not a tution. This is merely working on a test series with some support. AE workbooks are great and I am sure much research and time was spent on creating these. But without tution this is just a franchise model.

2. Some workbooks have questions based on concepts that were never taught in school yet. Example Roman numbers. These may be part of syllabus in pupil's school further down the line, its not fair to ask pupil to work on these problems which were never taught. Such questions will reduce confidence of a pupil.

3. The focus is on quantity rather than on quality. Each pupil irrespective of ability gets equal amount of workbooks in Maths and English. And this is huge 8-10 workbooks per week. So if a pupil needs to work more one subject, he/she will not have enough time as other subject is taking the time away.

4. The reason many parents take help from AE tution is because they can offer very less time of their own. So expectation from parents to check 8-10 workbooks a week is a huge ask. This checking and working with child takes good 2-3 hours per week of a parent.

Since my son is still enrolled in this course i will be looking forward to AE tution to resolve above issues.

My daughter took up AE tuitions in September for a period of a year. She is yet to appear for her exams. Irrespective of how she performs, I felt compelled to write my review on the 11+ course offered by AE, the quality of the material, the teacher assigned to her and the efficiency with which the process was managed during the pandemic. In all the above respects, the performance has been stellar. A very special thanks to her teacher, James Walton, for being very effective in teaching concepts and conducting the classes online (which can be a challenge).

My son took AE tuitions for a year, this review is not related to 11+ preparation which AE provides. There are plenty of people who have reviewed AE and I believe everyone's circumstances are very different. This review is for the customer experience what you get:

First incident:
Due to lockdown there was limited interaction to the AE staff but I happened to go to AE centre for an assessment exam. I found the behaviour of the staff was pathetic. When I reached there with my son, the lady who was checking the ID, had list of pupil and the floor where they will be appearing for the exam. She asked me about the floor where my son would be appearing and unfortunately I didn't remember. She rather telling me the floor, gave me the paper and asked me to read the floor as if I have done a biggest mistake of my life.

Second incident:
AE uses standing orders to save their cost and ask parents to setup standing order when their kid start the course however when you cancel it, it is not mentioned that you need to cancel the standing order. Obviously, it is mentioned in the contract (but who reads and remember the contract T&Cs). If somehow you do not cancel, the amount will be deducted and AE charges £35 to refund the amount. This is absolutely insane! Most likely, parents forget about cancellation of standing order and happen to pay additional charges (£35). I happened to pay twice (£70) because by the time I cancelled the SO, it was paid second time. After receiving the cancellation of the course, AE does not even come back by their own and mention to cancel the standing order, it is parent's responsibility to inform them and loose £35. This is psychotic behaviour!!

I found AE tutions as an excellent place for students to prepare themselves for grammer school exams. The clarity with which the teachers explain is great. I would like to appreciate each faculty in the way they put efforts to observe each and every student and guide them towards the right path. Thanks a lot for AE tutions.

I bought AE books for my child to prepare for 11 plus. All the books are very good and useful. Very well planned and structured material. I am glad to buy AE books.

Both my sons attended AE and are in top grammar schools now. Staff are really helpful. Extremely pleased and would highly recommend!!!

I thank AE tuition for helping my daughter & son getting into Grammar school. AE is well organised, helpful assistant & has excellent teaching methods. Staffs are always available to help with any enquiries. Have signed up my 3rd child with them 👍

My Son atteneded AE in year 5-6 the AE & he got admission in Herhal Grammer sachool, i would say AE is the best place for 11+ preps, i have also enrolled my Daughter with AE for 11 + prepration

Had a great experience with AE. Staff is really helpful and always encouraging. The classrooms are well organised and safe for kids. Would recommend to parents.
Course is well planned and books are very explanatory which kids can easily understand.

Highly recommend AE to people looking to help their kids to prep for 11+ exams. Have been very helpful during Covid times and provided extra help to kids to make up the time. Virtual training could be improved but has not had any negative impact on prep.

I would highly recommend based on our experience, my daughter has passed the Grammar school and Private school exams and the full credit goes to AE. Thanks to Dr Curran and all AE Tuition Team, especially during the lockdown.

I am so happy that I sent my daughter to AE tuitions for her 11plus. They provide really good books/materials for preparation and the teachers are excellent. I always enjoyed the last half an hour of class when they explained the homework. It really helped me to help my daughter at home in her homework.

I highly recommend AE tuitions for 11+ prep. My daughter passed every single grammar exam she took with a high score and received offer from a super-selective London Grammar school. She also won academic scholarships to few of the top independent schools in London.
AE coaching has immensely helped her tackle various exam formats. The books are of high quality and is designed to explain each concept clearly, rather than just focus on a cramming style exam prep. It has helped lay a very strong foundation in Maths for my daughter and we can now see she has developed a genuine passion for the subject.

I was also impressed how they quickly switched to remote learning amidst the pandemic. Yes it was not a substitute for classroom learning, but they did their best given the situation. They also provided additional material to keep the kids engaged when the exams were getting pushed out.

A brilliant experience all round. The staff and tutors at AE are a dedicated and exceptional group of people. Whilst preparing for Transfer Tests takes considerable effort from parents and pupils; the guidance, support and expertise that the AE team provide make this journey much easier to navigate. I was very impressed by how quickly they pivoted to online tuition at the height of the pandemic, ensuring that students could continue to get the support they needed. Regardless of the transfer test, I know that my child's results at school have improved significantly so I am very pleased my child passed the transfer test and has received an offer from a Grammar School. This means that my opinion of their support through the process would not have been different had she not obtained the desired results.

Great tuition and fantastic materials provided by AE, my son passed his 11plus and received offers from two grammar school. It takes lots of hard work and commitment from both parents and child, but it’s worth it as it boosts child’s confidence in themselves. Would definitely recommend!!!

We had a pleasant experience overall with AE tuition. We quite liked their material and its content. It builds up their knowledge quite well. Liked their teaching style.

Also, the amount of homework was just right.

Though our son got offered a grammar school, we found from our experience that it was more fruitful being at the tuition centre rather than attending the same over the Zoom meetings during pandemic.

Overall, I surely recommend AE Tuition.
