Check out the other negative reviews on this page and the glowing recommendations they give themselves in order to counteract the negative reviews. This so called company has gone to some length to appear legit and its very convincing. 10/10 for deceptiveness...
They contacted me on Instagram but suddenly I need to pay in order to have work recognised. Just search 1340 on Instagram and other negative reviews online and you will see that they have many Instagram accounts all with different 'curators'. When I replied to the 2nd email they sent me I received an automatic message explaining that the email address for Lisa harris art curator doesn't even exist!

Firstly, Trustpilot is a well-respected review company. Their software almost instantly detects fake reviews. In this era, reviews are found to be very important for people. We are constantly asking people to share their experiences honestly with us on Trustpilot and give us a review. Of course, we can’t help them write the text.
Secondly, our social team consists of 15 scouts who look for artists on Instagram. The team changes a lot, but we want to make sure everybody has their own account. This might result in some inactive accounts still being available on Instagram. We are putting more effort into deleting accounts we are not using.
Thirdly, the email you received was generated from our mailing system which has a 'no reply' email address. Please email our support team directly at info(@)1340art.com, as they are happy to assist with any queries or concerns you may have. We would also like to assist by mentioning that one should not always believe everything that they read online. It can prove to be quite dangerous.

It is very sad to see people believe false comments they read on the internet instead of contacting us directly to check the facts. In an effort to ruin our reputation, people have been using our name. Your conjectures are very disrespectful to our magazine team, as many stressful hours go into producing each edition. Maybe you should buy a subscription to our magazine so that you can check every quarter that it is real and not only online. Again, if you contact us directly, we are happy to share the readership stats and any other information you may require.
Not a scam. Just taking advantage of you
This is not a scam. They are only taking advantage of people who are desperate to have their art featured. There are thousands of "competitions" like this. They are making money because you give it to them. As simple as that. If you know your art is good you will not choose this way to be promoted.

As mentioned several times in our communication with artists as well as clearly stated on our website, we offer the opportunity for artists to gain international exposure. We require an entry fee for our magazine competition, but this is the ONLY feature requiring a submission fee, and all of our other features are completely FREE. It is also stated clearly that proceeds from our competition provide support to different art-related non-profit organizations from various countries for each quarter.
All in all we feel it’s a good deal. You have the chance to get a lot of exposure. Exposure a starting artist would normally not get. Again, we offer you the opportunity. It’s up to you if you enter. You can always tell us it’s not for you, maybe one of our other options suit better. We have many teams who work very hard on each of our features. We are always happy to assist emerging artists in any way we can, as this is our mission.
Dubious outreach practices, takes advantage of and misleads young artists
This art collective has a demonstrable habit of luring young and emerging artists into naively paying for content features, by telling them they love their work and will feature it on Instagram for free, and then bait-and-switching after the initial submission to let these artists know that they are strongly encouraged to enter a contest on their platform for a monetary fee. There is no outward mention of this contest anywhere on their platform, with no Terms and Conditions surrounding the publishing and ownership rights to submitted work, and no promise of any potential prize or compensation (not even a physical copy of the magazine) that may result from paid submission.
This bait-and-switch is a predatory business practice that attempts to take advantage of emerging artists unfamiliar with common businesses practices in art, who actually believe they are fueling their career by paying for exposure - which, many claim in forums and public discussions, never becomes realized. If you're approached by anyone from 1340, know that they are pretty much just surviving on the charity of naive artists (both in cash and content), and they don't deserve your work on their platform.

Dear Jorge. We are very sorry to hear this is how you feel. Please be correctly informed, however, before spewing out negative comments about our organization.
As mentioned before, all details of our competition are readily available on our website. We give information about the fee involved, what it goes towards, as well as what you will receive should you be selected (yes, it does say you will receive a physical copy for free). We also provide complete information regarding the rights of the artwork, and state (very clearly) that these always remain with the artist.
We have a team who is on the lookout for upcoming talent on Instagram, and if their work is of a quality that could be entered for the competition, we invite them to do so. As also previously mentioned, it always remains the artist's right to choose whether to enter or not. Also, there is a charity involved, but not as you described, rather each quarter, proceeds from our competition fees go to a selected art charity from various countries. The details of which, are also readily available on our website.

Very responsive and easy to submit work. Only critique would be to have better descriptions of the artworks on the Instagram page. People seem to be confused as to whether my photo is a drawing or not. And that seems to make people think my photograph isn't art which is frustrating.

Fake Art Competition and Scam
I was contacted by this company on my art instagram account in early April this year. They commented on my post saying "we love your work, can we publish this post on our profile, and it's free"
So I got excited and I said yes then hours later I received an email saying "we would like you to send us 4 samples of your work and pay $30 (£21.34) for their summer magazine competition" sounds exciting.
However it was all a bit off with me. Like the emails said they are from Amsterdam but there currency in the Netherlands is in euros not in dollars which is what it said in their emails. I've never heard or seen 1340 magazine and gallery before and galleries don't sell magazines, just like to point that out as I'm an artist and has done exhibition projects for years and years and we never sell magazines at galleries at all.
So I've been getting emails saying "hurry up you can't miss the deadline for the competition" this all seems to be a scam and the only winner in this competition, is those who run this company as get to win your money and take your artwork and sell it themselves without permission.
And the artist will get nothing in return, just your work published on their website and sell them without your consent.
Don't be fooled by these people. If there's a legitimate art competition and they will have fee to enter their competition. They should always explain to you what you could win and what's the prize at the end of the competition.
So please don't be fooled by these people as they are not legitimate. To avoid scams like this always Google their history and their reviews before you apply to anything.

We apologize for any confusion caused. Although we are registered in the Netherlands, we are an international magazine, and most of our audience is based in the US. Yes, it is possible for a Dutch company to charge in dollars.
We never state that the galleries sold our magazine. We sent them copies of our magazine free of charge, for them to give out. This was done at our cost to promote artists like yourself. Why galleries? Well there is a target audience, of course. People who visit these galleries are those who may wish to buy art. We therefore chose to showcase our magazine with winners of our competition to these people. Makes sense, don't you think?
Regarding the competition, we clearly also state all terms and conditions on our website for those who wish to read them. It states what the fee is for, and what the winners will receive upon being selected.You say, we should explain, but we are more than happy to explain, should anyone contact us. Next time you have concerns, it would therefore be in your best interest to contact us before making unfounded assumptions.
We also clearly state in our terms that we will never post anyone's artwork without their consent, and will never use anyone's artwork for anything other than what they submitted it for. Again, if anyone has a concern or doubt or query, please contact us so that we can assist further with any information or details required. Our team will be happy to provide these.

Spam and fraud..
Spam and scam... They have so many bot account on Instagram and they spam the same sentence to all. Not a seriuos magazine.
I'm not the only one, just try to write "1340 art magazine" and look the results, many people pointing to them about the scam.

Receiving exposure is valuable for an artist. We offer artists the opportunity to have their work showcased to thousands of people in our magazine. It's an opportunity for upcoming artists to receive global exposure.
We therefore deliberately decided to make pages available for these artists. This means we lose advertisement income. Sorry, but we are still a company and so we need to make up for lost income somehow.
We have the following teams:
Blog team, working on the blog, selecting artists, editing text etc.
YouTube team. Editing RAW video. Finding artists to make a video (Not easy because sometimes people are shy)
Magazine team. Trust me a lot of work and many people are involved.
Support team.
All of this costs money. Our people work hard and deserve fair pay (I hope you agree). Again, we offer you the opportunity. It’s up to you if you enter. Proceeds from our competition entries also go to art related causes around the world. So all in all, we feel it’s a good deal. You have the chance to get a lot of exposure.
Exposure a starting artist would normally not get. Again, it’s up to you if you enter. You can always tell us it’s not for you, maybe one of our other options suits you better.

Want a confirmation this is a scam?
First I got contacted and told that they'd love it if I submitted a photo because they like my art, and that it was free, and that part really is free. So then I submitted one.
Some time passes and what do you know? another email saying that I have been preselected by their judges for a competition! At that point they ask for between 20$ to 30$ to submit an artwork.
Now that's not the part that bothered me. Googling this scam online I saw that a lot of people got to that 'stage' of the competition, so I decided to test it. I created a different account and submitted that first free artwork, but this time (and I wish I could add a pic) it was a drawing of a stick figure. Appearntly they were very impressed by it because I got in to that final selection round!
Don't fall for this people.

We are terribly sorry to hear that you chose to believe what you read on a search engine instead of approaching us about your concerns. We invite artists to enter for our magazine competition and have different team members on the lookout for new artists. Art comes in various forms, and we are not here to tell you what you are allowed to enter as that remains entirely up to you as an artist. Something very frustrating came to our attention recently though. Other people are using our name for their own benefit. They are creating fake accounts and are approaching artists directly. Of course, this is something we are trying to fix but not always possible. We added several warning texts on our Website. So, again, if unsure, please contact us directly.
Scam to lure in desperate artists
A "curator" contacted me on Instagram asking me to follow the link in her bio to be featured on their page. I was initially suspicious, because she hadn't credited the artists on ANY of her posts. However, the "official" magazine account looked legit, with credits and almost 60,000 followers. I went ahead and submitted my work on their website, which looked legit. I received an auto reply telling me they receive hundreds of submissions per day and couldn't guarantee they'd feature mine. OK, that's understandable.
In the meantime, another "curator" followed me which I found a bit strange - why would this magazine I'd never heard of, despite having an arts degree, have so many curators?
The next day (appearing as if they'd spent time looking at my submission), I received a very flattering email from ANOTHER curator, "Carolyn Tait," saying I'd been "preselected" to appear in their printed magazine. I was, very naively, thrilled and followed the link, excitedly telling my mum and my fiance who were screaming, thinking someone had finally noticed me. It asked for $30 to be considered for this "magazine" that will appear in galleries in New York, Amsterdam, Berlin and London. I almost just paid, because I'm a desperate artist wishing my degree would amount to something, but I decided to Google it first.
Thank goodness I did, because almost every Google result is a discussion about whether or not this is a scam. They claim to be this huge international magazine, but have no real life presence. There are no previous winners. Nobody buys their magazine - someone even stated all they got from a "feature" was one click. They don't say WHICH galleries they'll appear in - why not? There are hundreds, even thousands of these "curator" accounts, none of whom can be found on Google. The link I received stated the deadline is April 30th, but others have been told it was February 28th and March 25th. Amongst the suspiciously generic positive reviews on Trustpilot, there are countless others like me.
I was, as many others were, very upset and felt completely duped. This isn't funny. $30 isn't a "small fee", it's a lot of money - two weeks' food! - to an artist struggling to make ends meet. I didn't pay, but others have and that's not acceptable.
I regret even submitting one image to them, since I don't trust them with it at all.

We have featured hundreds of artists in our various editions, and you can find all of them in each directory of the magazine. These numbers do not even include the hundreds of artists we have presented and are presenting on our blog and social media outlets.
If you contacted us, we could provide further information regarding which galleries had copies of our magazine. We are always happy to provide details to anyone and put any doubts to rest.

Regarding different submission dates. Imagine you have 500-600 submissions and you need to pick 100 winners? How would you do it? Would you do all at once? Or would you divide the work into batches?
So we do one edition per quarter, this means once every 3 months. So what if we would make a selection each month? Just to get some structure and to ensure a fair overview? Well, that's what we decided.
I hope this is ok with you guys. We just want to deliver a nice magazine. We feel this would be hard if we had to do it all in one week. We apologize if this doesn't work for you.

But still, we are very happy with every review we receive (we don’t want to offend somebody saying their positive review was badly written and not creative). I guess people who are not happy just have more passion.
