Soho House? More like Sh!tshow House

Having arrived with my colleague a few minutes early, we went up in the lift and entered the reception area of 180 House, the lady working on the door found our host's reservation, and said we could go to the dining room and wait at our table for him.

We found the dining area and explained that we were meeting a member for lunch. We were escorted to what I believe are supposed to be dining chairs. However, upon sitting on it, I found my knees were equal distance off the floor as my nipples. I'm only a beginner at Yoga, so I can't say I was overjoyed at the prospect of spending the next hour squatting with my ass barely 5 inches off the floor to eat lunch.

While trying to discreetly rearrange my man sac and skinny jeans so that my circulation would not be cut off from the impromptu “dinner yoga” class I suddenly found myself in, a stern waitress came storming up bellowing, “I need to see your membership card”. Again, I informed them we were meeting a member who would be with us shortly and off she marched.

Our host arrived, his first time in this particular venue, so he was equally surprised as he took to his seat and descended to the floor faster than the golden elevators in the lobby. Our waitress returned with slightly less wind in her bellows, which could only have come from a talking down about her attitude or her blowing into the kitchen stove to stoke the fire. She approached the newest person at the table, who she knew would be a member, and asked for their membership card in a slightly more acceptable tone.

We placed our orders; I ordered pie and mash; and discussed whether the designer of the room made that fatal mistake we've all made and accidentally ordered child-sized furniture on Amazon as it looked like a bargain or if they got inches and cm mixed up. As our lunch arrived, I realised I didn’t know the proper elbow-at-the-table etiquette. Not because of my council home upbringing, my nan always said, “working class doesn't mean no class,” and I was taught not to rest my elbows on the table. My elbow etiquette issue was whether they should be inside or outside my knees as I ate at this preschool high dining table.

I’ve eaten many pies over the years; as my slightly out-of-proportion but squashed-in a yoga squat gut will testify to; from the traditional pie and liquor of London, the pukka pies from the chippies across the country and the exquisite handmade pies from the Rosewood Hotel. This pie, however, was in a class of its own. A meat pie that was nothing more than a pastry pot filled with gravy and gristle.

As I eat the first mouthful, I feel the tough, chewy lumps between my teeth and look at my fork to check I did eat the meat and wasn’t the victim of a skilled prankster who pinged an elastic band into my mouth from 50ft away. As I realise I’m not going to be able to chew through this giant lump of gristle, and not wanting to make a scene in front of our host, I get my sparking water and try to wash it down. As I drink the water, my mistake becomes evident as the bubbles from the water make the gristle bob up and down in my mouth like an unflushable stool. I tried to stay calm as the gristle repeatedly hit the back of my throat, and I gulped it down safe in the knowledge that was going forward; whenever I say I've swallowed worse, it will no longer be a euphemism but a statement of fact.

A slight euphoria struck as I got over the event, smiled politely and continued the conversation, blissfully unaware this pie would have me begging god to send me to hell and be force-fed pies made by Sweeny Todd. Out of sheer politeness and not wanting to make our host uncomfortable as they were pitching for work, I force-fed this crud-filled crust into my squashed stomach, with every bite making me close to tears and unable to concentrate on the conversation.

I note that throughout this meal, no one approached the table to ask how the food was, or if they did, I was too busy choking down the “meat” to notice. After the meal, my colleague said I looked sick through lunch, and I explained why. Apparently, throughout my ordeal, I was unaware I was not alone. Both my colleague and host also struggled to eat their food. My colleague said their risotto tasted like someone dropped a salt pot in the pan while our host barely touched his mac & cheese. Three straightforward meals, all inedible. Maybe that’s why the staff have such an attitude? Perhaps they know the food is so bad, and they will have to deal with complaints, so avoid asking.

love having soho house as a go to place

I love having soho house as a go to place - great interior, comfortable seating, relaxed atmosphere and good vibes. Best thing - the dressing rooms at soho beach house in Miami, amazing experience. Things I would wish got improved: food and lower volume on the music playing. Overall though this is a great place with awesome feel.

Soho House Member

As a member of Soho House West Hollywood and all houses, I can honestly say that the service has been impeccable. I have had a couple of disasters when it comes to ordering dinner i.e my order being incorrect or food being cold. However, it's not about the problem, but how the problems get resolved. The staff are amazing, attentive and always rectify the situation and any problems I have encountered. They have always been able to put things right immediately.

Thank you Soho House, I am happy to be a member of your club. Keep up the good work!

disapointing

for a place for creative people to gather, soho house is very boring. it does not inspire creativity, its just crowded and expensive but i love the farm house, its one of a kind

Worst service of my life

Worst service of my life. Every single time at soho house I literally have to fight for the attention of the waiter. I once was coughing and needed a glass a water and it took 45 mins to get a water.

I currently sat down at electric house and waited for a waiter for 10 mins until I asked for a waiter. I am now waiting 25 mins to water and a tea, best part is that is half empty.

Absolute joke....

Absolute joke of a pretentious, self-absorbed, ego-inflated establishment. When you start believing your own hype - especially when it's completely unjustified, the facade will slowly, but surely diminish.
As for the so-called "Head of Subscriptions" Brian - how he was ever put in the exalted position to speak to fee-paying members, is one of the universe's greatest mysteries.

Hi I’m writing this review for all chefs if I can but no star at all I will do it but I can’t this is the worst company ever stupid management specially a Guy named Joe in Balham is in charge for the South London absolute chaos nothing is organised they using chefs like a piece of equipment no respect Everyone get paid same regardless of experience it honestly is the worst company to work for for all chef please don’t apply for it look at caterer every time I go they they are looking for chefs The management are very very stupid with no experience nothing and very arrogant

My experience at Soho House was stellar…

My experience at Soho House was stellar from the moment I entered the door. The staff was attentive and friendly. The manager, Kacey Schwenk took me personally to meet my party and made sure all of our needs were met. Her attentiveness was over the top!

The food was delicious, service was great, and the atmosphere was wonderful. Kudos to the management team for producing such a great experience.

Total lack of communication

Total lack of communication. Got approved for friends membership after 9 months of waiting, automatically took my money, I tried to cancel immediate but no one answering contact form or phones.
Is anyone working ?? Or is the 14 day grace period not an option for you ? And let’s just stay quiet and refuse the refund?

Unimpressed

I know right now is a difficult time for soho house and I've been overall impressed with the club over the many years of membership I've paid for. But somethings amiss now. It's so difficult to get hold of anyone to discuss anything. I've been locked out of the website tried to contact someone...anyone... but nothing! So I've resorted to this.

Membership is very expensive for this type of customer service. Unimpressed!

Greatly recommended

Can't overstate the value of having a membership.
Facilities, service, the overall experience is second to none. I've been able to take advantage of their hospitality on multiple trips in the UK and Europe. And whether it be for work or social commitments it's always been a pleasure.

Visited Dean Street Townhouse and had a delicious lunch but what really made the catch-up with my sister special was the amazing service we received from Olivier - what a superstar waiter - he couldn't have been more helpful for knowledgeable about the wines.
