First Class
We’ve just stayed at Hidden Field for the second time (June 2022), having also spent five nights there in August 2021. That was our first foray into glamping, with a two-year-old and four-year-old in tow! At the time, because HF had only just opened there were no reviews, which is always a worry, however we needn’t have.
Andy, who runs HF is by far the most welcoming and accommodating host you could wish for. There are people that go the extra mile and then there is Andy. On our most recent trip we came with friends, with two young ones of two and five and he went out of his way to get things set up so we could make the most of our trip together. Andy asked if anything could be improved, and our friend mentioned that their two-year-old could use the toilet unaided but couldn’t here because there was no kids step to get on the loo with. We went out for the day and by the time we returned, there was a step waiting. That’s the level of thoughtfulness and care that makes a stay at HF extra special.
The tents themselves are spacious for a family and well furnished with comfortable beds and all the storage etc you would need. The toilet and showers are each allocated individually to a tent, which makes life much more pleasant! The welcome hamper is more than generous, eggs, bacon, sausages, bread, butter, marshmallows for the fire, beer, crisps, chocolates; everything you need to get off to a great start. The shop is also great for picking up the odd bits and bobs and there doesn’t even seem to be a mark-up on things. It’s just there to make life a bit easier and available 24/7 as it’s run on an honesty basis where you write what you’ve taken on a card.
The separate tent for cooking and eating is well kitted out, so we learnt our lesson on the second visit and brought nothing in that respect, which meant we didn’t need to bother with the roof box this time!
With only the five tents, it doesn’t feel busy and even with little ones, they can have the freedom to roam the field and play with all the games provided. There is nowhere for them to disappear off to really and you can easily have them in sight from whatever tent you are in. Last time we were in tent four, one of the ones further into the field, this time tent one, closest to the shop and bathroom block. With younger ones, tents one and two do make it a little easier to keep tabs on them, as they are closer to the games and give you a shorter journey for toilet trips! If you prefer a more secluded life without any passers-by, tent five is your best bet.
Location wise, it’s really pretty good and you can go North towards Padstow (recommend Treyaron Bay – some great inland rock pools), South towards Falmouth, East towards Mevagissey (we caught a boat from there to Fowey for the day) or West towards St Ives (use the park and ride at St Erth and get the 10 minute train that runs right along the beach). Porthtowan beach is close by and you can do a nice walk along the coast from there to Chapel Porth beach and then onwards towards the picturesque old tin mine at Wheal Coates. (About 3.5 miles there and back.)
