I like Hertz. Check in and out is easy. Billing transparent. However, this rental the people were efficient but not very friendly.

When I arrived to pick up a car, every time the representative went to assign me one, that car was not available. I reserved a full size and ended up with a Mercedes. It was a holiday weekend so I understand things were busy but to have so many cars that needed service seemed odd. Halfway on my drive to New York, two warning lights came on the dashboard. We consulted the owners manual and that gave no indication how to fix it. So we called the 800 roadside assistance number and were told if the check engine light was steady we could keep driving. We drove and an hour later another light came on that said “performance malfunction” and the manual indicated the car needed to get immediate service. I went to the Hertz location on 34th St. in New York City and found a very pleasant and helpful representative named Chris miller. He told me to open a Road Assistance case and give him the number and he would find a car for me. I so appreciated his willingness to help. But then I called the 800 number and was told they couldn’t open a case number and give me the number, they needed to talk to Chris themselves. Well, I had already returned to my hotel so then I walked back to the location, called again, and the second operator didn’t have any of the details from my first call so I had to repeat them all and kept getting asked if the check engine light was steady or not. I explained again what was happening and that I needed a replacement. It was very frustrating as I was trying to solve the problem for hertz but the hertz computer system wasn’t keeping any of the details I was sharing.

When I picked up my prepaid rental from the airport, I asked if I could return the car in the city. I was told yes, and the location in the city was on my return paperwork. I arrived to find the office closed and no lock box for key return. After multiple phone calls, being hung up on twice and being transferred to roadside assistance, I was told that I needed to drive the car to the airport to return. I was not willing to do that, so I threw the keys with a note into the closed office. The following day, I was charged$366.92 for a late return and an additional day of rental. I called and was told the $366.92 would be refunded. Today I received an invoice that is for $198.70. So far, I have not been charged on my card. This is exhausting and disappointing. If I could give negative stars I would.

I won’t be renting a car from Hertz any longer. Never again. Their PlatePass scam is being reported. I have no issue with the location or their employees, my issue is with Hertz– the company and its policy regarding PlatePass and their highway robbery. They think consumers won’t stand up against this. Wrong.

Tank was nearly empty when I picked up the car. I will be returning all future rentals without refilling the tank to make up for my cost in refilling the tank completely after using the car for a 1hr drive.
