I have enjoyed all of the classes, both in person and online courses, that I have taken. The teachers are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I, also, have been very satisfied with the haberdashery supplies that I have purchased.

I feel very privileged indeed to have had Lucy Martin spend the day teaching my GCSE students at Kings' School. She demonstrated a variety of embroidery techniques, working with the pupils to help them achieve a beautiful piece of work.
Lucy then delivered an outstanding
presentation, detailing the history of Hand and Lock, to the pupils and the
Broderers of Winchester Cathedral.
Lucy's extensive knowledge and exceptional skill in her subject made the whole day an incredible and unforgettable experience for everyone who was there. Lucy has been a profound influence on us all and has even offered to mentor pupils who are interested in a career in this field.
I can't thank Lucy enough for her
kindness and generosity, she is genuinely one of the most inspirational people I have ever met and I feel honoured to have had her come to visit our school.

I first heard of Hand and Lock through my university course where I purchased a bunch of supplies to complete my embroidery. I had amazing communication with the staff through the ordering process and they kept me informed about availability. Since then I have done two courses with them (Ceremonial gold work and Couture Costume embroidery) with one being in-person and one being online, and I have found both to be incredibly interesting and helpful. The tutors were amazing for both courses and they were very professional and helpful, making sure to explain everything so people with all skill levels can understand the techniques.

I can’t wait to do my next course and have absolutely no complaints about the courses, staff, or materials!

I’ve bought goldwork supplies from Hand & Lock before and did an online course with Lucy and my experiences have all been great.

The course was nicely paced and having access to the recordings was extremely helpful to go over any aspects I couldn’t quite get during the live session or for refreshing my memory later on. Lucy is a great teacher, super friendly and helpful and having a WhatsApp group specifically for course members made it extra easy to discuss and clear up any doubts between sessions.

The supplies I’ve bought have all been great quality, choosing coloured bullion online could be a little easier if you could filter for colour group or finish but the list and photos do work nicely.

I’d highly recommend H&L to anyone interested in goldwork and embroidery, they’ve been around for 250 years for a reason!

The whole experience s a joy. The expertise of Lucy and Freya is amazing, friendly and encouraging.
Lucy and Freya communicate on whatsapp and email with around 250 people. They engage their learners in discussion of new developments and addressing any queries colleagues may have.
The materials provided for the lessons are first class and beautifully packaged. The instructions both in the booklets and in lessons are perfectly balanced between showing the techniques and encouraging learners to pride themselves in their achievements even when the learner makes the occasional error!

Well, what can I say - thank you to the Hand & Lock team for the incredible opportunities and products you deliver! Nothing is ever a problem and you are all so approachable and professional, despite being very busy people. It’s great to have such a passion to educate people. I’ve waited a long time for this and so glad I’ve discovered you. Classes are so creative and versatile. They’ve enabled me to integrate all of my creative interests.
I’ve completed several in person and online courses including with excellent guest tutors, all of whom are experts in their field. And when you introduced the diploma it was the answer to what I’d been looking for. I’m now taking 3 modules which align with my interests. The tuition and balance is fantastic and being able to connect with others is lovely. In addition we are gently guided and pushed out of our comfort zones, with lots of encouragement to build confidence. I’m loving it!

I have done the 2 days silk flower making course with Anne Tomlin - it was a great experience, very professional and at the same time fun.

The course content is excellent and Freya’s instructions are clear and comprehensive.

I came across Hand & Look's YouTube channel when I was looking for instructions on how to set up a slate frame. In the video, Juliet shows how to thread the needle - a small but important detail that I hadn't seen since I trained as a bespoke tailor. This made me realize that I could totally count on Hand & Lock, and I have not been disappointed. I am currently on two diploma courses and absolutely love the complexity of the challenge, the precise instructions and the personal support from Lucy and Freya! Learning from the best! I had a few issues with customs as I live in Germany. Eve from the shipping department was super helpful and everything arrived on time! The materials are beautiful and inspiring! I am very happy that I can join the online courses from here and that the great kits are sent by post.

Hand and Lock is the place to go to learn embroidery. They have a rich history and a great learning program. I have taken a few online courses and absolutely loved them! I was nervous about learning online versus in person but the courses are well planned and manageable. Kits full of everything you need are sent to you ahead of time. It’s no stress and all fun embroidery. I highly recommend to anyone trying to learn the craft

Fantastic experience on my inperson course. Tutor was really engaging lots of lovely explanations, materials, examples and history. On Tambour beading embroidery workshop / Luneville. Met some great people I have kept in-touch with and been inspired to do more; go to more including seeing the prize exhibition for myself and keep in touch long after the course.

I love the courses here they are so creative and the tutors are excellent! The building and shop is also beautiful as are the collection of supplies and handmade items

I come from a different creative background to embroidery and I wanted a challenge in the Diploma, whilst being supported as I learn the different techniques. I get that in abundance in enjoyable classes. The tutors are great fun but at the same time so professional.

I have attended two courses delivered by Hand & Lock, one in person and one online. I was apprehensive about online learning at first because embroidery of whatever kind is very much a hands on activity. I needn't have been, the course is delivered by an excellent tutor who gives everyone personal feedback and advice. The advantage to online and weekly sessions is that you can practice and ask questions in the course group at any time. In the classroom it's difficult to practice in your own time as the equipment is left at the end of the day. Both methods have their advantages. I wouldn't hesitate to book further courses with Hand & Lock of either type because it's a wonderful experience and I would recommend them to anyone who is interested in furthering their knowledge.

For me Hand & Lock is synonymous with unparalleled embroidery courses, but I’d also like to commend the staff who work behind the scenes, especially Eve. Eve has gone out of her way to help me with various orders, and her work heightens my respect for Hand & Lock.

I am currently taking my first Hand & Lock course.
Freya is an excellent, friendly and very patient teacher. I’ve even learnt how to thread a needle correctly for the first time!
The WhatsApp group is an excellent way to send photos and queries to Freya and share with everyone.
I am enjoying this so much that I will definitely be booking a second one.

The courses offered by the school are very interesting and well prepared, the materials provided for your project are abundant are of high quality.
It's very nice to also see a young team of involved embroiderers as tutors - people, who have worked with big fashion houses etc., but are still so down to earth and excited to teach.
The slight downside - and this is why I'm not giving a full 5 stars - is that the school doesn't refund courses, so if you can't attend the class, you'll be stuck with the materials etc.(yes, you have access to the recorded classes, but it's not always the same) instead of giving the place up to another person. There should be some time gap that would allow people to cancel their attendance in case of need.

I had my first online class with hand & lock with Lucy Martin. It was the Lord of the Privy council goldwork class and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Lucy was an excellent teacher and her knowledge and experience in someone so young is awe inspiring. The quality and the quantity of the materials was also excellent. The online classes make it easy for anyone to take a class in the comfort of their own home regardless of where you are in the world. I would definitely like to do another class.

I’ve just recently discovered Hand & Lock’s wonderful online courses. I’ve had the pleasure of having Lucy Martin as my tutor and I am in awe of the talents that this girl has. When I learned how young she was, I was further in awe. The versatility of things that she does, and she does extremely well is just amazing. And to top it off, she is incredibly calm confident and very funny. I can’t say enough about how well the courses are run, the content is just incredible and the quality of the products is second to none.
