Shady Business Practices - Softopper (Bestop Group of Companies)
I was looking at purchasing a Softopper (made by Bestop) for my truck and was made aware of a Memorial Day sale that would save me $100 on my purchase. I proceeded to go online to order my Softopper, but didn't complete the sale as I was gathering feedback from users before I committed to spending $1,000USD on this unit.
While I was reading reviews and doing research, my transaction was not complete and my cart remained untouched on the website. Softopper emailed me a 5% discount valid for 24 hours only, if I completed my order. Seeing how I could save some additional money, I decided to complete my transaction to take advantage of the additional savings. However, the system kept rejecting the promo code. Immediately following this, Softopper emailed me another offer for a 5% discount if I signed up for email notifications. I therefore signed up expecting the 5% discount. When I entered the new promo code, the system rejected that one as well.
I decided to contact customer service to sort this out, and they proceeded to tell me that discounts could not be combined. I provided screenshots of both offers I received which did not list any disclaimers or conditions for the promo code. I argued that the discounts were unsolicited by me, and no conditions were expressed, so the discount should be honored.
I was informed they would not honor the discount, so I cancelled my order and decided to let other potential customers know about these shady business practices. All online retailers have an obligation to list any restrictions or conditions when offering promotions so that consumers can make informed choices. Softopper by Bestop do not operate above-board and mislead consumers in making purchases under false pretenses. In this case, they did not own up to their mistake, and lost a customer (and potentially others) over a 5% discount.
As consumers, we need to hold retailers to a higher degree of transparency and integrity when spending our hard-earned money.
Update: I am now receiving email offers from Softopper despite not being able to take advantage of thier discount promises.
