Waste!
If you walk away from the recording, it is lost. Editing functions are horrible. The playback function sometimes does not work! What a waste of time and money!

I think it's great they offer this program free for song creators but it would help if it worked. Every time I try to do something it either freezes or closes. When I try to record it doesn't do anything. Very frustrating
before using this program i was an avid adobe hater. I hate their pricing practices and wanted to support any non-adobe alternatives. 20 minutes after trying to use this program for a class assignment, i bought an adobe membership because i would rather shell out $30 dollars a month for audition than ever use this heaping pile of garbage again. Only download this product if you are into hardcore BDSM and can take being slapped in the nuts every time you try to split an audio clip. 0/10 stars, delete yourself.
I have been an Avid user of Audacity 2.x for over a decade for many different audio projects.
The biggest project has been digitizing audiocassette recordings of the disciples of the silent Indian Master, Meher Baba, easily over 10K hours of recording.
Recording cassettes from a tape deck to a computer running Audacity 2.x was a breeze.
The only downside was every hour of recording resulted in hundreds of *.au files.
When Audacity 3.x came out, I was very excited, as opening A2.x files in A3.x allowed me consolidate *.au and Index files into a single *.Aup3 file.
Yaaay.
I was gradually getting caught up in the conversions, when I received another 200 hours of recordings. "I.ll just digitize a few cassettes a day," I thought, "and within a few months, all the recordings would all be digitized."
After two days of trying five diferent Windows 10 computers running A.3.2.x and 27 different combinations of Host/Recording Device/Playback Device, Tape Deck Settings, computer settings, even though I could hear the audiocassette crystal clear through headphones / speakers, all that were A3.2x captured was fuzz or static.
Audacity does not ask if you want to upgrade - it just upgrades automatically, and I have no clue how to revert.
After two days of faffing around, I finally gave up, and checked the Internet. Guess what?| Audacity 3.2x DOES NOT SUPPORT AUDIOCASSETTE TAPE OUTPUT.
Alas, A3.2.x managed to convert my extremely nice high end Sony Tape Deck into paperweight.
I'm praying that one of my older Windows 8.1 laptops has been quarantined from the Internet and has an old version of Audacity 2.x installed.
Fingers crossed.
Completely not intuitive. Tutorials do not coincide with how the software really works. Very long latency while recording. Monitor never worked. Error codes appeared while trying to record. POS and worth the price I paid for it: nothing. Garageband is the best.
bro i do not recommend
i do not think that in 2025 i should be having issues with recovering a project because of failure to sync. the software on its own is quite archaic. Audacity did a great job to partner with audio.com because woah, without it, it would be frustrating to deal with storage and recovering files. nonetheless, it's still frustrating.
all in all, i do not recommend
Audacity is a program intended to exasperate and make you want to throw your computer out of the window. A persistent bug caused the program to crash. Today, I received an update that the newest version is better, more stable, and leaner. I clicked the button to download and install the application, but after several moments, a pop-up window appeared, suggesting that I should close the application to install it.
I did that, but after several moments, it stuck again, and Windows alerted me that an error had occurred because Audacity’s wizard couldn’t close the application. I opened the task manager and observed that the wizard was not responding. I have never used a worse program in my life!
I had to uninstall it again, and now I have to visit their website to download a new version to install it because this one lacked stability. I also noticed that it keeps telling me about the project I made several weeks ago and recommends that I recover it. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software should resolve the problem, but this is not happening here. Horrible program and the worst thing ever! Stay away from it.
I love this. I've been doing "experimental" computer music since 1983 (VIC-20) and Audacity is... Simple. Functional. Fast. Easy. It stays out of the way, and does what you tell it to do. I had a flash of inspiration last fall and created 5 hours of music in 2 months. I didn't even have to think about the basics of the program end, just focused on the sounds I was making. Best of all, it's not "cool" looking, and you can actually see what you're doing on an uncluttered screen THAT IS NOT BLACK WITH GREEN TEXT. Thank you, Audacity Team.
Audacity was the first DAW (digital audio work station ) i ever tried out . its extremely easy to use and can really give you an idea on how DAW's work . you can get a few things done like record , remove background noises and as you go on you'll probably learn a thing or two about auto-tune plug-in's . its pretty great
This is nice and simple to use so anyone can get into it easily, but there are far better DAW's out there, and audacity can't really be considered a proper DAW.
REAPER is a great DAW that hosts an impressive amount of features, but can be very complicated; it's worth going into though if you're into great sound quality, as REAPER produced the best sound quality in a DAW I've ever heard thus far when mixing.
Audacity in comparison sounds muffled and lacks noticeable bass in the audio, while also sounding flat, which makes music or audio sound lifeless & boring.
REAPER brings every audio you put into it to life, which makes REAPER an objectively better DAW for its amazing sound quality replication and the ability to be used professionally, being able to revert any change to the audio without destruction to the audio.
You can also do things in REAPER that you can't do in audacity, like being able to turn the audio in any direction of your ear, which is called spatial audio, and with its amazing sound quality, that's an even bigger plus!
Audacity on the other hand only gives 2-dimensional audio, which sounds flat & unrealistic.
I've also heard that Audacity could be spying on its users, which is no good for privacy if that's true, so do be warned.
Super Programm und legitime Seite. Danke vielmals an die Hersteller!
I have been using this software on and off for 10 years plus. It has undergone a few facelifts and overhauls but seems to work very well. I expect there are many alternatives out there but I feel confident with this. Its amazing what you can do with a poor audio track, thanks to Audacity. Its free but you can make donations of course. The one thing it could really use is an DPI upgrade for modern monitors as the interface is looking a bit blurry these days. All in all a nice piece of software. Thanks for keeping it free and developing it.
