Long-time member forced to fight to honor original contract
I’ve been a member of 24 Hour Fitness since 2007 and last year, I had my membership rate increased without any clear justification. This contradicts my original contract stating that my renewal rate should remain fixed FOR LIFE.
In Fall 2025, I went into my club and asked why my rate was going up, only to be told that they couldn't help and to call a phone number. I did so, but the AI only gave me the option to pay my dues with no other options.
In November 2025, I then visited the club that I went to for 6 years and spoke with the GM there, Julian Lopez. He was friendly and offered to help me. He even let me work out that day for free since my membership was technically still in limbo. He said he would email his Support team to investigate. I thought that my issues would be resolved quickly, but I couldn't have been more wrong. What followed was 5 months of back and forth:
In an email from Julian on November 17th, 2025, I was told the increase was due to a supposed “2018 declaration” that I never received, signed, or was even aware of. Even more concerning, my rate remained unchanged from 2018 all the way through 2024, which directly contradicts that explanation. To make matters worse, he recommended that I sign up for a new plan and lied saying that it would be better than my old plan. He had the audacity to try to SELL ME a new plan.
I then asked him to provide:
Proof the declaration was ever sent
Documentation showing I agreed to any rate change
I didn't hear back until December 1st, 2025 where he said he was requesting assistance from Support. I then had to email him twice and didn't hear back until December 18th, 2025. After that, I had to email him AGAIN on February 13th and 18th and didn't hear back until the 19th.
Julian and I faced constant delays from corporate support and I had to repeatedly follow-up with little to no response.
Even more troubling, at one point I was even told by Julian to pay the higher rate or risk losing my membership entirely, while the issue was still “under investigation.”
After escalating repeatedly and threatening legal action, Julian escalated this to his district manager, Wendy. I then received an email from Julian where he quoted Wendy:
”After reviewing we have rolled back the members rate back to $29.00 (from increased amount due to a clerical error) the rate has also been locked in. I have also refunded the difference in payment of $90.00 back to the card used to make his payment.
You can provide that information to the member.”
This isn’t just a one-off issue. 24 Hour Fitness has faced class action lawsuits in the past over similar practices. They have been raising rates on long-term members despite contractual protections. Many other customers report having to fight the same battle (just look at Reddit).
Here are my biggest issues:
- Lack of transparency around contracts and rate changes
- Extremely poor customer support (no direct contact options)
- Long resolution times for simple billing disputes
- Burden placed on customers to prove the company is wrong
I eventually got my correct rate back, but it took far more time, effort, and persistence than it should have.
If you have a legacy membership, monitor your billing closely. If they raise your rate, be prepared to push back hard.
Closing woman's lockerrooms
First off, this gym is not open 24 hours. Because of this, it is unacceptable to close the woman's locker rooms in the middle of the day for cleaning. Do that after hours.
Mens locker rooms don't get closed in the middle of the day. Just the woman's. I guess we can all tell this gym is managed by a man. Because anyone who has had a kid will tell you that no, it is not acceptable to close the woman's locker room and expect the women to just ... hold on? .. until they reopen them?
They have an "all gender" single restroom that was occupied the entire time I was in the gym today so no, that's not an option if you are female and want to go pee.
I brought this up with the manager and his response was
"well this is what we have done for 6 years so ..."
So basically saying we have disrespected women for the last 6 years and we are not going to stop doing so now.
Yeah. I'm headed over to Vasa. Cheers.
THIS GYM CANNOT PROTECT FEMALE MEMBERS
THIS GYM CANNOT PROTECT FEMALE MEMBERS. This is just part of what I experienced when I asked this person to turn down his very loud phone in the sauna. In addition to cutting me off anytime I asked him to turn his phone down, the racist person called me a white b***h several times. He called my mother and father names, and called me a trump voter multiple times.
Feeling very unsafe and like the guy could get violent, I went to find the manager. Tony the manager went to the sauna and had to tell the guy several times to leave the sauna. Meanwhile, the guy and other men now there, who were not there for the original incident, continued to call me names in front of the manager. The manager did nothing about this, though he was seeing it himself. After trying to return to the sauna, I was then bullied by the other men that were now there. I was called a white Karen and bullied out of the sauna.
I went back to the Tony the manager to see how the situation had been resolved. The guy ended up just walking out, and the manager told me, “we’re not the cops, we can’t arrest him.” He did admit the guy should not have had his phone sound up like this, and said if he could ID him, his membership would be revoked. I asked the manager if I had to now go to a white girl gym to feel safe. He said no.
When I got home, I wrote to corporate about the incident. They acted concerned, and took a week to investigate. I was then updated by their district manager Rob that the manager received extra training, though never said what, and that the member has been identified and was on a list if there was one more incident, his membership would be revoked. I asked how I was supposed to feel safe returning to the gym. He said they will are going to have policies about phones.
I did learn from Tony the manager I was not supposed to record. However, I see people recording all the time, and have been a member of the gym for so long, I honestly did not know. I did tell Rob that I’ve learned as a female if I’m in a potentially dangerous situation like this, to record so I have some proof since guys will inevitably deny they’ve done anything wrong.
24 Hour’s response was essentially a non-response that does nothing to guarantee future safety or repercussions I could encounter if I did return. I do not recommend this gym to anyone that cares about their own safety at the gym.
Irvine jamboree half of the treadmills…
Irvine jamboree half of the treadmills out of order. Take your business elsewhere. Terrible oprration. No one cares!
I haven't been to this gym in over a…
I haven't been to this gym in over a year. When I stopped going to 24 Fitness, I told the administrator I was stopping for health reasons and asked to cancel my membership. Just today, they tried to charge me my monthly subscription fee of $54. I went to the office to get an answer to my question: Why are they charging me if I haven't been to the gym for over a year? After all, it's very easy to see whether I went to the gym all this time. It turns out that regardless of whether I went to the gym or not, they told me I'd be paid $500 for my position. They're only interested in one thing: squeezing as much money as possible out of people. Because an incompetent employee forgot to close my membership, now I have to pay for a service I never actually used. They don't care about my explanations. It looks like the employees do this on purpose to get money from the client this way. I'm sure most people don't even try to get their money back because they think it's impossible. I think it's unfair to the clients. You can sign a contract with them in 5 minutes. Terminating a contract is a real problem. It looks like a scam. Be careful and attentive if you decide to work with them. A little more about the quality of service. You know, it seems like they've learned how to fill their budget without hesitation, using various tricks and dubious schemes. But they haven't learned how, or don't want to, invest in the development of their gyms. That's why the equipment is all old and many are broken. The sauna is just a name. Otherwise, it's just a barely warm room that even a homeless person in dirty tights could enter. The same thing with the pool. The smell of chlorine is enough to suffocate you.
I attribute this to poor Management and Corporate
This place is horrible. Rockwall needs a new gym just as big as this one equipment malfunctioning filthy grips missing belts missing something is always broken. Management old and new lie to you. They couldn't care less about the members that are already there all they're concerned about is making money on new membership, which is why you always see that huge turnaround and members. They allow people to wear a shirt that says. F_ _ K ICE even when they have small children running around doing jujutsu class. It was brought up with the front desk and they couldn't care less and allow the person to continue wearing it. I think the minute a new gym opens up in this area that as big as this one this place will fade away, really really fast.
Privacy Violated at 24 Hour Fitness
I am writing this review because what happened in the women’s locker room was unacceptable and deeply upsetting.
I was changing in the 24 Hour Fitness locker room with my 12-year-old daughter. I was completely undressed, and my daughter was in the process of getting dressed, when a male janitor shouted into the locker room that it was time to clean and that he would be coming in. I yelled back that my daughter and I were changing and asked him to please give us a minute to get dressed.
He responded that we needed to get out because it was time to clean, and then he walked in anyway.
I was fully undressed. He did not avert his eyes or immediately step back out. He looked at us, told us to leave so he could clean, and then exited.
As a mother, this was shocking and extremely uncomfortable — especially with my minor daughter present. This was not an accident. I clearly communicated that we were changing and asked for privacy before he entered, and despite that, he chose to walk in anyway.
Afterward, I called 24 Hour Fitness to discuss the situation and asked to cancel my membership because I do not feel comfortable returning, nor do I feel comfortable bringing my daughter back. The response I received was defensive and dismissive. I was told that cleaning times are posted, that I could cancel in the app but would not receive any refund, and that I had waived liability under their membership agreement.
The entire experience — both the incident itself and the way it was handled afterward — was grossly wrong. Members, especially women and children, should have privacy and basic respect in a locker room setting.
I cannot recommend this location based on this experience.
24 hour AllenTx
I go to the 24 hour in Allen, TX. The personnel behind the desk never greet me or say goodbye. They just stand there engrossed in their phones. Just so rude. Would a friendly greeting kill you? Geez.
24 Hour Sh**hole
I have been a member for 33 years and this is the worst condition I’ve ever experienced. Half of the machines are broken and have been for months. For the group exercise classes, there is only enough weights for half the people who show up. Management refuses to purchase more, which leads to people hoarding weights. Floors mirror and bathrooms are filthy.
Customer service is bad
They can never give notice on due dates until late fees. Never get my name, address and email correct.
Tight fisted 1-sided customer service at 24 Hour Fitness in Castle Rock CO
I signed up for a 1-year membership at the Castle Rock Colorado location in Dec 2024. I began using the gym a couple times a week until I came down with a cold or flu or Covid (?) in the first 2-3 months.
Being a highly cautious person regarding illnesses, until that point, I had not even been infected with Covid, since 2020. Since I had just started using a public facility with LOTS of hands-on equipment and huffing and puffing, I assumed that I caught the bug at 24 Hour Fitness. After several buddies telling me the same thing, I decided to stop using the gym.
In the time I used the gym, I never once saw anyone actually cleaning the equipment..especially the weight machines and free weights. So, I decided that I had wasted my money because I just stopped going. Not worth the risk of getting really sick at a "health" club. I realized at that time why gyms were shut down during Covid.
Just two weeks ago 24 Hour tapped my debit card for 2026, on auto-pay. I went in to speak with them today and they insisted that they had sent me an email in November and claimed that they tried to call me to notify me of the auto-pay. I got home and went through my Nov 2025 emails and there was no email from 24 Hour Fitness.
The kid who I talked with gave me a very rehearsed speech on how I agreed to the auto-pay and how even if I had not received their email, they had sent it. Then it was "well, they sometimes call". I told him why I would not be coming to the gym in 2026. Bad hygiene, poor maintenance..
Overall, it confirms for me the anecdotal stories I've heard from others regarding 24 Hour Fitness. I have buddies who have all reported more frequent sickness when they go to 24 Hour. From what I saw in there, it is basically a germ farm. Relying on customers to wipe down their equipment only creates a virus soup smeared on everything that users get to take home with them. Hand-washing and using wipes doesn't cut it. Big fallacy. Equipment must be CLEANED...DAILY.
I'm not going to jeopardize my immune system by trying again. I bought some equipment and using it at home.
The auto-pay culture needs a proper burial. If my business can't create return customers without pre-charging the client for their next purchase a year in advance, then I think I need to reboot my business model or get out.
The point of this review is to remind consumers that large corporate entities like 24 hour Fitness which will not extend a "human factor" to their customer service policy need to pay the "market penalty" by losing a few potential customers for every paying customer whose legitimate issues they dismiss. .
After several years of the Covid drama 24 Hour needs to stop trying to recoup lost income by NOT having much customer service and squeezing every buck.
I will cost 24 Hour Fitness of Castle Rock 10-20X the $210 they charged my card by word of mouth. That's how it's done. Lots of people out their trying to get into shape, and negative PR goes a long way.
That's the free market way.
Charged me twice and didn’t return it
I’m writing this review in the hopes of learning if anyone else has had this happen to them. I’ve been going to the 24 Hr Fitness on Los Alisos in Mission Viejo, CA, a smaller, neighborhood location for about 13 yrs now. Recently my insurance changed and included gym membership, so we updated my account so that insurance was paying for it. But the next month I was charged again on my old account as well as my insurance paying, so they were paid twice. When I brought it to the attention of the manager there and asked to be reimbursed, he said he would be happy to update his system (glitch on their part) but that he could only credit me back 50% of what I was over charged. He said he couldn’t give me back the full amount that they over charged me. Isn’t that strange and unreasonable? I couldn’t get him to credit me back the overage, and I’m still annoyed. No apology or offer for product in the amount of what they still owed me…yet if I owed them money, I’m sure they would be on my case to pay what I owe. I will be contacting a higher office on this, but I wonder if this is what they do to everyone? If so, it’s poor customer service and a terrible business practice…makes you think ‘crooks’. Not okay…and yet we really like the staff and have many friends there, so I am torn, but I want the full amount of what they overcharged me! Is that too much to ask?
UPDATE: 24 Hour Fitness has now refunded me in full since submitting my review above. I’m still not sure why this was dragged out, but I’m happy this is resolved.
Eddie and Berta
Eddie at the front desk was professional and caring when he confirmed my access to various 24 HR locations.
Berta on the cleaning crew is friendly, plus she keeps the gym spic and span.
5 stars to both Eddie and Berta.
Tanasbourne
Tanasbourne, member for three years, classes never smaller then 15 usually 25 or more. Went last week to my Saturday spin class only to find out corporate closed the room because of some new program they up charge for and loaded the cycle room with fancy recliners!!!! Moved the bikes to a crowded classroom on the other side where each of us seniors have to wait until the class in there finishes then move out our own bikes and also move them back. No more warm up, class not on time so not a full hour or comfortable and when we wanted to complain, were told it came from corporate and they don't care ---
Cleanliness and facility maintenance…
Cleanliness and facility maintenance are major points of dissatisfaction. Multiple reviews describe gyms as filthy, with dirty floors, unclean showers, and malfunctioning equipment. One reviewer noted trash on the floor in the men’s shower room, broken steam rooms, and stolen shower heads, while another described a facility as "DISGUSTING" with outdated machines, worn-out pads, and unsanitary conditions, including a "no-go zone" bathroom. A review reported dirty showers, black floors, a lack of air conditioning, and a jacuzzi that was broken three-quarters of the time. The cleanliness of wet areas like jacuzzis and pools has also raised health concerns, with one customer reporting skin irritation from a jacuzzi with improper chemical balance, despite no follow-up from staff.
Security and theft are recurring issues. Several reviewers reported lockers being broken into and belongings stolen, with one noting that shower heads had been stolen by thieves. A review from described a lack of accountability, with a member's membership being auto-renewed and charged without consent, despite repeated attempts to resolve the issue with both the local manager and corporate customer service, which was reportedly unreachable.
And today I learned the company is seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It may not be a good time to join.
How long does it take to fix the…
How long does it take to fix the equipment? I'm still paying every month my membership but we have several machines that have been broken for 2 to 3 months. This is not acceptable.
Absolutely terrible!!!!!
Been trying to submit a cancellation of service for weeks and then get charged an annual fee and they refuse to give me a refund for their system being faulty. Was never given ANY form of notification that they were even going to charge my account for an annual fee in the first place. And when trying to even call about the situation was given the run around several times.
24 Hour Fitness on 120th Scammers
24 Hour Fitness is running a promo for a 3-day try out our gyms before you commit. So I downloaded the pass. And headed to the nearest 24-hour Fitness located at 2831 w. 120th street, Hawthorne, CA 90250. Jonathan was seated at the front entrance. Let him know I had the 3-day pass and questioned how is it used? His response was “we don’t honor that here. That’s just something corporate says.” My response was, “your sign out front says the same thing.” Jonathan response, “yeah I know but we don’t offer that here. Our computers won’t process your free pass. But you can purchase a day pass for $30 and work out today.” So I ask for a manager, no one was available so he gave me a customer service email to address my concerns. However, I left went to the next closest 24-hour Fitness in Manhattan Beach and this location welcomed me with open arms! Shout out to Piaget who was at the front desk, very friendly, showed how to use the free pass and gave me a tour!
Be careful with the 120th Hawthorne location because Jonathan appears to be scamming customers out of their money. Don’t fall for it!
I look forward to trying the other location with the pool tomorrow. However, Jonathan is giving 24-Hour Fitness on 120th a bad reputation!
Hermosa Club is now DISGUSTING
I have been coming to the Manhattan and Hermosa clubs for many years. I can’t even remember how long. The clubs are DISGUSTING. They have fallen into disrepair.
In Hermosa, at least a third of the machines are broken. There are no workout pads. All of the equipment is old and outdated, pads on the machines are worn out, busted or nonexistent creating safety hazards.
The club is FILTHY. The club is very overcrowded, getting excessive usage. It is a health hazard. Nothing is clean, the floors, the machines, the windows. There isn’t one part of this club that doesn’t need a redo, the locker rooms, the sauna, the exercise area, all disgusting and unsanitary. Let’s not even talk about the bathrooms. They are a no-go zone.
This is completely disrespectful to the South Bay community (the Manhattan Beach facility is often worse).
A refresh won’t do. You need to close this club, gut it, and completely revamp it.
To add insult to injury, the parking here used to be free. Now it’s pay for and while the first two hours are no charge, longer workouts are penalized. Three needed to be a MINIMUM.
This is all unacceptable. The health issues are real and present. I have gotten a number of eye infections in recent months. It’s so bad that I have asked personnel whether the club is being sold.
I go to other clubs (Del Amo) and in Denver and they are kept up. Where is this one is not?
Can you please do something about this immediately?
