I bought a rigid pv panel, floor mount and Uk mains cable to micro inverter lead. All were delivered very quickly. Support from Hannah has been a stand-out part of the customer experience: helpful, responsive and no hard sales push.

I had originally wanted the 400w rigid panel for size and weight reasons (a bigger panel would just have sat in the shade). Unfortunately they were out of stock but Thunder were offering a larger 465w panel for the same price so I took that instead.

The floor mount can also be used as a wall or balcony mount; comes with hardware for all three options. The instructions are ok but a bit of common sense is needed to interpret them. I used thread locker on the screws as a precaution and would recommend that. The mount is of good quality, painted aluminium and reasonably light at 5kg; will take a standard 1800mm x 1130mm panel nicely but you will be restricted to an angle of around 40 degrees, which actually is fine for the UK. The panel itself is an AIKO. The UK cable was needed to hook up my inverter in a compliant way and was well made.

I now have a system that is giving 800w in Scotland on a sunny day, which is great. As plugin solar rules allow exactly that, I had an electrician install an external spur socket and rcbo to ensure that was compliant too. Very happy and have recommended Thunder’s lightweight panel solution to my brother, who only has fencing available to mount panels. Once the regs catch up with battery installation, I will likely buy one of those from Thunder.

The system is now installed and working well. At this stage it is largely a matter of fine-tuning the battery settings to suit the flat’s actual usage pattern.

The installation has shown that the solar and battery setup works as intended. On sunny days, the vertically mounted south-facing panels are generating around 1kWh per day, which is encouraging for a balcony-style installation. The battery is particularly useful, as it allows cheap overnight electricity to be stored and then discharged during the more expensive daytime/evening peak periods. This makes the system much more valuable than solar-only generation, especially where export payments are not available or not worthwhile.

The battery control options are also useful, although they take some adjustment to get right. Once the charge/discharge timings are matched to the property’s usage profile, the system should provide a good level of day-to-day cost offset.

A few practical points from the installation:

Provided zip ties
The zip ties supplied with the kit were not long enough for the installation. We purchased 550mm zip ties, which were much more appropriate and made the panel fixing much easier.
Battery positioning
Although the battery can technically be placed directly on the floor, the electrician advised that it would be better slightly elevated. We used two air-source heat pump rubber floor mounting bars, which provided a stable raised base and helped keep the battery off the floor.
Fused spur faceplate
The supplied silver fused spur faceplate was surplus to requirements in our installation, as the new circuit was surface-mounted on a white wall. The electrician instead installed a white fused spur faceplate with an LED indicator, which looked much neater.
App instructions
The instructions could be clearer that, when using the battery kit, the S-Home / relevant battery app is all that is needed for setup and monitoring. This was not immediately obvious from the documentation.
Firmware updates
The instructions should also make clear that both the battery and inverter may need firmware updates before generation and load figures display correctly. Until these updates were completed, the readings were not fully accurate.

Overall, the system appears to be performing well. The hardware is working, the battery is proving very useful for reducing peak-rate electricity use, and the system is now at the optimisation stage rather than the troubleshooting stage. With some improvements to the installation instructions and small supplied components, particularly the fixings and setup guidance, it would be a more straightforward installation experience.

Having the Thunder Energy Solar System installed has been the perfect solution to all my reservations about having solar. The team fixed a Storm 4 panel 700w kit, microinverter and Hoymiles battery to the side of my house then helped me set up the APP (which is for the user to see the solar energy being captured in real time - and much more I've yet to learn about it). Even now, without having optimised the APP settings for maximum energy storage in the battery, I can see how my electricity consumption from the grid has fallen in just 3 weeks of use since the first day of installation. The Team followed up to ensure everything was running perfectly which it certainly is. I did have some issue with my phone not staying connected to the system which meant I couldn't see how much electricity was being produced although the system was still quietly working and bringing down my electricity consumption from the grid. Ugur was so helpful in getting me back into the system. I would therefore recommend a solid Wifi connection and an up to date phone. The solar panels are very light and can easily be attached to a garden fence which is something I would like to do in the future. Thank you Matt and Ugur.

Delivery super fast. Communication from Thunder has been great. First they checked in as my order was for some specific parts rather than a whole kit. Then they followed up a few days after to make sure everything was working correctly.

Got Storm 360W for our balcony and it has worked brilliantly for us. Makes lots of sense to have this for us, as I’m WFH and has been a strong boost for energy saving for us.

I have a big, south facing garden but our dormer means that traditional solar panels aren’t cost effective. I came across Thunder who offered an greats alternative… they quickly arranged and installed a 1.07kWp system together all for under £1000!
