Ubiquiti U7 Outdoor: Difficult Mounting Plate and Disappointing Return Support
I purchased a Ubiquiti U7 Outdoor directly from Ubiquiti for $251.14. The mounting plate and return process made this an exhausting experience.
MOUNTING PLATE: On October 20, the day my unit arrived, I carefully slid the mounting plate onto the back. It snapped into place but wouldn't come off. The security screw was never installed; the unit was unused and unmounted. Repeated removal attempts failed, and I wouldn't risk damaging it. Other U7 Outdoor owners have reported similar problems online.
A professional installer ultimately freed the plate, but even he struggled. There are four open slots on its back: two upper and two lower. He tried pressing and pulling firmly using the upper slots without success. He then used the lower two slots, applying considerable force, and the plate released. This worked on mine but isn't a guaranteed procedure. Why isn't practical removal guidance included in the instructions?
THE RETURN PROCESS WAS WORSE: I requested a return on the day of delivery. Ubiquiti's online system offered only $207.49 of the $251.14 I paid: a $29.85 restocking fee plus $13.80 in original shipping charges.
After several messages, a representative said that, after I submitted the return, he would leave a note requesting that the restocking fee be waived. Despite my questions about the entire $43.65 difference, shipping wasn't initially addressed. Only after another email did he say the shipping charge "should" be refunded when the entire order was returned.
"Should" isn't "will." Neither adjustment appeared on the return form. Ubiquiti explained that its returns department would determine the final refund after receiving the merchandise.
I had no objection to returning the unit and waiting for inspection. I simply wanted written confirmation of the full $251.14 refund, assuming the equipment was returned undamaged. Instead, I was expected to submit a return showing $207.49 and trust that the remaining $43.65 would follow. Ubiquiti declined my request for that confirmation or an alternative return authorization.
RETURN DEADLINE: Ubiquiti's open-box return window is just 14 days from purchase, not delivery. I ordered October 14 and received the unit October 20. Six days had already passed, leaving approximately eight days to arrange installation and discover potential problems. That's restrictive for equipment often requiring professional installation.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT: I couldn't find a telephone number to speak directly with someone about store returns. The advertised "AI & Live Chat" process initially provided generic instructions rather than addressing my concerns. Repeated emails were necessary to obtain answers. One representative even criticized my use of AI-assisted correspondence.
When I opened a Visa debit card dispute, Ubiquiti informed me that no further action would be taken while the dispute remained open and instructed me to withdraw it before the return could proceed.
To be fair, I ultimately had the access point professionally installed and canceled my bank dispute. The device works, providing approximately 90 Mbps on my patio, although speeds drop to 6–20 Mbps near the back of my yard. Stucco construction and placement may contribute. My installer did excellent work.
My one-star rating reflects the troublesome mounting design, inadequate instructions, and confusing, burdensome return process—not a claim that the device doesn't function.
My advice: Before buying directly from Ubiquiti, carefully review its return policies, document any problems immediately, and obtain written clarification of the actual refund amount. Customers purchasing expensive networking equipment deserve better instructions, transparent refund procedures, and accessible customer support. After spending an extraordinary amount of time trying to resolve a straightforward issue, I am extremely disappointed with Ubiquiti Networks.
