Deliberately supplying wrong information
I recently contacted SMAS Worksafe for clarification on whether I needed their accreditation for upcoming work. Their advisor explicitly informed me that I required SMAS accreditation in order to work with a specific contractor.
On the strength of that advice, I proceeded with the application. However, after speaking directly with the contractor, I was told that they do not use or require SMAS accreditation at all. This was a complete contradiction to the information given to me by SMAS.
This situation has been extremely frustrating. I relied on the guidance of their advisor, only to find out it was misleading and resulted in unnecessary time, cost, and administrative work. For businesses operating in construction—where compliance requirements need to be accurate and reliable—this kind of misinformation is unacceptable.
I feel strongly that SMAS should ensure their advisors provide correct, contractor-verified information. Being told I “needed” accreditation that was not actually required has damaged my confidence in their service.
I would urge others to independently confirm client requirements before applying, as the advice I received from SMAS was not accurate.

SMAS - Breath of fresh air!
So normally I would dread this time of year as I have to start the process of completing CHAS, Constructionline, Safe Contractor and Avetta. The process of these applications is so lengthy, time consuming and stressful. This week I received a phone call from Connor Fraser at SMAS (who we were also with) to say that we could do the full application with them, answer 15 questions and this will work as a deem to satisfy to all of the above without having to go through the full application process on each one. It all sounded a bit too good to be true. No joke, the full application with SMAS took me about an hour in total and is all done.
Connor is the only person out of all these companies who has taken the time to explain the differences of full applications and deem to satisfy and how exactly they work and didn't just send an invoice charging the earth. He took me through the application process step by step with an explanation on what was needed on each question. Guess what? If I need to call him to ask a question, you ring his number and it goes straight through to him and he answers. No call centres, no hold music, I didn't need to fill out an enquiry form to request a call back, amazing! Literally hours of my life have been saved.
SMAS - a note directly to you, hang on to staff like Connor, he was excellent and a true credit to your company, his enthusiasm for your product is infectious and turns out, rightly so! So often with sales you end up buying because of the person selling and this is 100% the case.

Extremely Disappointing Service and Unprofessional Conduct
I am extremely dissatisfied with my recent experience with SMAS. We reached out to inquire about the renewal pricing for our accreditation, only to find that the costs had increased dramatically for what is essentially a basic administrative service that offers minimal benefit to our business.
When I raised concerns about the pricing, the advisor I spoke with was unhelpful and dismissive. I even mentioned that CHAS was a cheaper alternative, but was told we had no choice but to renew with SMAS.
What was even more frustrating—and downright unprofessional—was that after our call, the advisor went ahead and contacted our main contractor to inform them that we were refusing to renew our accreditation, despite the fact that we still have more than two months remaining on our current certification. This was completely unnecessary and seems to have been done with the intention of causing disruption between our company and our contractor.
We are still under contract with SMAS, so the advisor's actions seemed entirely motivated by spite and were both unhelpful and underhanded. This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable and reflects poorly on the company.

Easy to use portal and helpful service
As a safety advisor to over 50 companies, I complete many applications for SMAS, CHAS, CQMS, Constructionline, SafeContractor and others.
I completed a SMAS application today in about an hour which would be impossible with any of the other providers.
The accreditation was urgent for my client so I called SMAS and spoke to a real and helpful person (My new friend Dan).
SSiP accreditation is important and need not be complicated.
SMAS at present have the easiest SSiP application process and the most helpful staff by far.
If you can choose your SSiP provider, choose SMAS.

By comparison, SMAS make the task of completing all the SSiP application processes THE most straightforward and easy to comprehend.
The ability to actually talk to someone directly is very reassuring, the quick turnaround makes it a completely stress free experience.
