Duped by STIX car rental, Slovenia

DO NOT RENT car from STIX, Slovenia!!! Unfortunately, I did and like many other reviewers here, was hit with repair costs ($678) for a 5mm scratch that I did not cause (unfortunately I didn't take photos of the car, another mistake). STIX, Slovenia did not contact me directly about this aledged damage. Rather, I received notice of the charge through a collection agency 6 months after my 1 week of travel in Slovenia. There are plenty of other car rental agencies to choose from at the Ljubljana airport. Avoid this one!!!!

Beware of This Sixt Location

I have traveled throughout Europe for the past three years and rented cars from Sixt (Munich 2023), Hertz (Rome 2024), and Sixt again in Ljubljana (2025). In both the 2023 and 2024 rentals, the experience was straightforward—keys were handed over with a simple “enjoy your vacation.”

The experience in Ljubljana in 2025 was very different. When I picked up the car, a technician immediately inspected it in extreme detail, carefully documenting every pre-existing mark. While this may seem like good business practice, it raised red flags due to how unusually thorough and suspicious it felt. I made sure to photograph every documented imperfection before leaving.

I drove the car for three weeks across four countries while visiting Christmas markets. I was the sole driver and did not have any accidents, collisions, or curb damage. Upon departure, the Ljubljana Sixt location was closed, so I returned the car and placed the keys in the night drop box.

A week later, I received a damage claim for €1,314, alleging a scratched tire rim. One of the photos they provided clearly showed the same damage I had photographed at pickup. Other images appeared to show a substance—possibly clay or something similar—applied to the rim to make the damage appear worse.

If you choose to rent from this location, I strongly recommend taking detailed photos and a full video of the vehicle both at pickup and at return.

I am of Slovenian descent and have many Slovenian friends, all of whom warned me about this type of practice with local car rental companies. Based on this experience, I would recommend flying into a neighboring country and renting a vehicle there rather than using a Slovenian rental company.

J'ai reçu après plusieurs réclamations concernant le montant de 597 euros plusieurs courriers qui ne répondaient pas à ma demande de baisser le prix. Et j'ai dû payer cette somme avant le contentieux dont ils me menaçaient. C'est HONTEUX ET A FUIR. C EST DU VOL, De L'ARNAQUE

We rented a car from Sixt, Ljubljana Airport, which is probably the seventh occasion that we have used this brand. We took out every possible type of insurance cover, including Roadside Assistance, which we naturally assumed would actually cover all types of roadside assistance.
We were wrong - read on:
After getting a puncture, we found that they had rented us a car without a spare wheel and that we were supposed to fix the puncture using a potentially very unsafe method, requiring the injection of a rubber solution to act as a temporary repair, following which we were then supposed to drive (on narrow, winding roads, followed by a motorway), to a tyre repair facility.
Not wanting to die that day, we decided to call their roadside assist team, which we assumed that we had paid for in our insurance coverage entitled Roadside Assistance. They sent a tow truck that we have now been billed for. In other words, the roadside assistance insurance didn’t actually cover what it seemed to represent. Ah yes - when we queried this charge, they pointed to the exclusion at the bottom of the densely worded 4-pages rental contract.
We will never again use Sixt.

If I could give them a negative 5 I would. We should have read the other bad reviews before using them. This entity is dishonest, not reputable. We rented the car from the Lake Bled location and turned in our car at the Ljubljana airport with NO damage. The car was checked in by the most unprofessional staff I've ever experienced. They checked off everything as turned in as fine no damage. Subsequent to that they raced off with this car and one other skidding around the roundabout and screeching tires. The car had no damage and was out of our control for 3 full days when we were scammed like all the other bad reports. They said we scratched the bumper on the lip where the hatch meets that area and the repair was over €350. They also fraudulently said the hatch lid liner was missing. It was never there. Again the car was checked in 0 damage 0 issues. The horrible fuzzy, undated images were sent to us with a flurry of emails. We replied to every one and called the only number they provide which is a "customer service" rep who knew nothing and did nothing. This place is not even a true Sixt vendor it's owned by another entity. Do NOT Rent from them under any circumstances. You will be sorry and out of pocket of a lot of money. I hope this saves you the 2 months of problems and hundreds of dollars or €'s use another company.

À la prise en charge du véhicule, je demande si je peux me rendre en Italie. L’agent me dit qu’il n’y a pas de problème, qu’il doit juste l’ajouter dans son système. Comme il est tard et que j’ai déjà attendu 45 minutes avant d’être servi, je ne fais pas plus attention que cela au contrat. J’ai donc la mauvaise surprise de découvrir après coup qu’il ne s’agissait pas seulement de rentrer l’information dans le système. J’ai été facturé d’à peu près 30% du montant de la réservation… c’est la première fois qu’un coût additionnel ne m’a pas été expliqué en amont. La réponse de l’agence est encore plus décevante puisqu’elle se contente de donner sèchement une leçon sur la lecture du contrat. Elle n’a pas tord, mais est-ce bien ce qui est attendu d’un service client ou attend-on une réponse polie ?

Everything was good

Everything was good: we had full incurance for damages and windshield etc. That was nice, cos we has caused one damage to rear bumber.

Only minus I can figure, was that it was unclear where in the airport the returning point was and how to get in that parking hall. Car was perfect and service was great also

This review is only for the Slovenia…

This review is only for the Slovenia location at the train station in Ljubljana.

We had a terrible time dealing with Sixt in Munich Germany, after we lost our keys while visiting Ljubljana.

Thankfully Nina at the Ljubljana location was SO SO helpful and friendly. She gave us her name and number to call if we had any additional issues (which we did use a few more times). Ultimately we could not resolve getting a replacement key for the car rented in Germany, so Nina helped us transfer a different car to our reservation so we could drive back to Munich to make our flight home.

We will still have the horrible experience upcoming having to deal with the Munich location as they try to collect their vehicle from Ljubljana, but Nina and the crew in Ljubljana are absolute gems.

Grosse arnaque

Grosse arnaque.
Lors de la remise, la personne en charge remarque une minuscule rayure sur bas de caisse en plastique à l'arrière. Je ne m'inquiète pas en me disant que cela ne coutera pas si cher et que c'est comme ça, j'ai rayé je paye.
Mais c'était jusqu'à recevoir une facture de 495€!!!
Et il fallait voir comment le departement des sinistres a géré... Je conteste la décision en demandant qu'une facture et non un simple devis soit envoyé (car sur devis, comment suis-je sûre qu'ils réparent vraiment?) ils me répondent (une semaine plus tard) avec un mail générique qui ne mentionne même pas ma demande. Je demande à un avocat de m'aider, et le MÊME mail mot pour mot lui a été retourné. toujours avec un délais de réponse incroyable.
Donc pas le choix de payer même si on sait qu'ils ne vont pas réparer le véhicule...

Prise en charge du véhicule :
Ils ont voulu nous faire payer leur assurance (qu'on a refusé) car on l'avait pris avec Booking . Qui assure très bien.
L'histoire du plein aussi qu'on a payé en plus ...
Avant de rendre le véhicule, on l'a lavé, contrôlé, impeccable...
Restitution du Véhicule : le mec a mis voiture sale et une légère rayure à la portière (il fallait la voir. ) le mec savait
directement où elle était...
C'est une grosse arnaque Sixt aéroport Slovénie Ljubljana !!!
En plus, ils sont mauvais, ils nous ont envoyé une première facture et ensuite une deuxième : ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font. Heureusement pour nous, c'est la première qui est passée : 104 euros (conducteur en plus et le plein)
La nous avons reçu la facture de la, soit disante rayure : mon conjoint me dit ce n'est pas claire du tout : on a l'impression que la facture est falsifiée et que la voiture est jamais passée chez le carrossier...
On va faire appel... On ne va pas se laisser faire... Histoire à suivre...

Highly unethical
They charged me almost 500 Euros for a tiny "scratch" under the bumper that I didn't do. When I tried to fight it they threatened me with additional fees. This is extortion!!!!
Completely dishonest company.
As I later found out, this is a wide spread culture in SIXT, look on line for multiple similar examples at SIXT world-wide.
Tell your friends not to ever rent from SIXT

If could give SIXT/Slovenia a '0' out of 5 I would. I had a similar experience to others in this forum. Upon return of the car to Ljubljana, SIXT staff cited damage that did NOT occur during my rental. Moreover, they charged a ridiculous amount ($500) for barely noticeable scratches. I refused to pay and they threatened a collection agency. I will never use SIXT again.

Todas las reseñas negativas que podéis leer de ellos son ciertas. Llevo cientos de vehículos alquilados por todo el mundo y es el primer problema que tengo en mi vida. Si no vas a contratar el insurance cover con ellos, NO ALQUILES AQUÍ. Cuando devuelves el coche, tienen una nota de dónde buscar un rasguño, que en muchos casos ni se ve y te cobran el daño. Si has contratado a través de intermediario, éste te reembolsa el cargo (por más que he intentado que reclamen contra ellos, no ha habido manera). También he probado a denunciarles a la oficina de consumo de Ljubliana, pero he terminado por desistir.

What an awful company

What an awful company! The staff at the pick up in Ljubljana were rude and unhelpful. I returned the car in perfect condition, but they later claimed there was a superficial scratch. My photos do not show a scratch. They charged me $467, which at first I refused to pay on principle. It was such an obvious scam. I finally paid because I had rental insurance through Rental Cover - whatever you do - don't rent from this company.

Muy atentos a la carrocería !!!

Mi experiencia con Sixt Ljubljana ha sido muy negativa y coincide con lo que otros muchos clientes describen aquí. Al devolver el coche, me reclamaron 240 € por un rasguño mínimo en la pintura, apenas perceptible, del que no tengo constancia de haber sido responsable.
En la recogida no se me indicó ningún daño en esa zona y siempre aparqué en lugares seguros. El proceso de reclamación fue frustrante: envío de correos, fotos y explicaciones, sin que en ningún momento me mostraran pruebas claras de que el daño se produjo durante mi alquiler.
Tengo la sensación de que es una práctica sistemática: daños previos menores que no se anotan y que luego se cobran al siguiente cliente. En Google Maps figuran con un 3,9/5 (donde muchas reseñas negativas desaparecen) mientras que en Trustpilot tienen un 1,9/5 con decenas de casos casi idénticos.
Recomiendo documentar todo con fotos y vídeo y considerar empresas locales como Avant Car o ATET para evitar este tipo de experiencias.

Estafadores al descuido

Es la primera vez que tenemos una incidencia al alquilar el vehículo en más de 30 años. Nos cobraron por un rasguño superficial en la pintura que no habíamos hecho 240€. En Ljubliana estacion de tren. Viendo reseñas vemos que es una practica habitual. Evitarlos a toda costa.

Stay away from Sixt

We’ve been renting cars worldwide for over 30 years, and never have we had such a poor experience as with Sixt at Ljubljana Airport.

The employee who handled the return was unprofessional, visibly stressed, and overwhelmed by the number of customers returning cars at the same time. She was short-tempered with us and others, and the entire process nearly made us miss our flight – in part due to Sixt’s late office opening hours.

To make matters worse, more than two weeks after our holiday ended, we were sent a charge for a scratch on a wheel cover. This was despite having received a return receipt confirming that the vehicle was in perfect condition at drop-off.

The provided photos even show mud on the tires – a clear indication that the car had been used by someone else after us, as we had it washed immediately after refueling on the morning of our return.

Moving forward, we will only rent from Avis and Hertz – and stay far away from this fraudulent company.
