Rails of Shefflied is rated as a reliable and popular UK model railway retailer: I beg to differ on being reliable and providing good customer service.
My recent exprience has left a very bitter taste as to this rating and the customer service provided, as the purchase of a preowned locomotive, through their online shop, was describled as in excellent working order only to find it to be the opposite: not as describe and their testing of such stock inadequate which has left me out of pocket finacially.
So, I would either avoid purchasing preowned stock from them or buy with extreem caution. Making any purchase on the condition of any finacial losses incurred due to their incompetency on testing and assessment of preowned stock their responsiblity. This is because they do not adhere to Consumer Law and by making it part of your contract gives you some protection.
I hope this feedback helps you in your purchase through Rails of Sheffield and protects you as a customer as I found Rails of Sheffield do not want to protect you as a customer.

I read in the review summaries that some "Rails" customers had negative comments to make about occasional delivery delays and lack of communication. When I recently purchased an unusual OO scale locomotive from "Rails" there was a delay in the item being posted, but I soon discovered that the item had been fully tested over a few days by their technicians prior to posting and found wanting. The delay was then caused by "Rails" staff trying everything to satisfy my purchase, rather than take the easy way out and just refunding the money. They understood from emailing me that I was really set on obtaining the item (obsessed was probably a better description 😉😉)so I could complete my extensive Bulleid collection. Long story short, they went the extra mile and came up with a really good compromise after considering a number of complicated options. I have now received the locomotive and couldn't be happier. So, next time something doesn't go right when you order something from "Rails", don't immediately give them a low score and complain. Find out first what had happened and why, then let them work their magic like they did with me. After all, I live nearly 16 thousand kilometres away from Sheffield, and I can't fault their service, or their prices. This is a good example why this hobby needs professional and reliable retailers, not just direct from manufacturer sales.

I emailed RoS after my oo Bachmann Class 30 diesel loco started to make 'groaning noises' recently. I got a response within hours advising lubrication might solve the problem. Although initially this didn't work, Shane offered further advice and sent detailed step by step instructions enabling me to disassemble the loco to get to the problem area, based on personal experience. The loco is now up a running properly again. Help in true modellers tradition; thank you Shane and RoS. In contrast Bachmann have yet to reply to my request for assistance.

I have bought from Rails several times. I had a few issues that I dreaded dealing with, especially given I bought online.
Well I have been absolutely floored by how superb the customer service is.
There are no problems they are not happy to deal with. Any issue I had was resolved with the smallest of hassle. No ridiculous hoops to jump through. I was believed and treated with respect by people who seem genuinely interested in the hobby.
And imagine speaking to a human being within 3 minutes! The novelty.😂
The website is fabulous.
The only slightest downside is the deals they keep sending me. I will bankrupt myself soon 😉.
In total, they are the bench mark against which all online retailers should measure themselves.

I sent an inventory of my complete layout which I had sadly had to decommission. I was quoted a very fair price. Rails arranged that the two large cardboard boxes were picked up by Parcelforce. They reassured me that the boxes had arrived safely and everything was intact. I received the money directly into my account the following day. I have nothing but praise for the excellent service provided by Ben and The Rails of Sheffield Team. It saved me a considerable amount of hassle.

I part exchanged some of my older rolling stock. I contacted Rails on Tuesday and the deal had been completed by Friday. This is far quicker than other companies that I have used and I am highly delighted with this transaction. A special mention goes to Ben who saw through the transaction so efficiently.

Recently I sold some of my model trains to them and the service I received was excellent, from sending a courier to pick up the boxes, to receiving the payment, it took only 3 days. This is about the third time that I have sold items to Rails. As ever the service and speed of turnaround has been brilliant and I have found that the prices that they paid are very decent. Rails is certainly the way to go, especially if one is selling more than a few items, no hassle, fast and good prices paid.
