I undertook a BA top up course here in educational studies and the scariest part was being the only man on the course. The tutors and lecturers were amazing and always had time to answer any questions in depth until I fully understood everything. That was over 8 years ago. Now I am returning in September 2026 to undertake my Masters in Educational studies at the young age of 50. Applying was relatively easy and I have already been sign posted to departments that can support my academic writing skills and well-being. Can't wait to start

Terrible and disappointing experience they are so eager to get you to enroll and then they’re just least concerned with the issues you face. They don’t care at all if you’re a struggling international student they will never solve problems but instead create more…I got my visa refused and their policy clearly states they will refund me back my deposit of £7700 but now they keep making up excuses and it’s been 2 months I still don’t have my deposit back. DO NOT TRUST THIS UNIVERSITY they are misleading and deceptive.

Terrible uni! Poor support and courses could be better!

Had so many problems from day one!
I felt treated. The city is dangerous especially at night.
My house mate was robbed and injured in his first week.
Uni never told us our block is right in the middle of a rough area with high crime!
They’re desperate to enroll anyone but not interested in your concerns when you have them!
Wasted 2 yrs of education there which I regret.
Don’t make the same mistake as us

One of the worst University ever come across. Started my masters and no support from no one. Teacher on my last module a very crazy one lol. I had to stop my studies but even I don't attend the course only one week no refund is given. Disgusting place. Avoid at all cost

I had a very disappointing experience at the University of Portsmouth, which ultimately led me to withdraw from the Master's program. The staff exhibited a complete lack of care, and the entire operation was chaotic and poorly managed. Students receive minimal support; I found myself nearly begging for replies to my emails, only to be met with indifference.

The lecturers came across as snobbish and unapproachable, which only added to the frustration. The course itself was akin to a "Mickey Mouse degree"—a waste of both time and money and far from what was promised. My experience was so horrible that it left me feeling like I had wasted a year of my life.

I strongly advise prospective students to stay away from this university. It was a deeply disappointing and distressing experience that I would not wish upon anyone.

I am a former student at this University. I obtained a 2:1 degree here in 1998. When I asked for my academic transcript which I need to validate my studies and professional career in my home country, they could not find it and their excuse is that they have a policy whereby they don’t require to keep student records prior to their electronic collection of data. However, in 1998 when I graduated, the European credit system was well into place and you would have thought that they would have had the sense and organisation to keep paper records for ex students in case they ever needed to continue further education in any other country. Other more competent and well organised universities as the University of Southampton have produced my transcript for my postgraduate course and they do keep paper records. I have been dealing with The university of Portsmouth since April 2024 and I have tried through their ineffective complaints’ process to come to an agreement and obtain a partial transcript or a document which would allow me to prove I have studied there but after spending countless hours writing emails and making phone calls, they are still refusing and showing no duty of care towards their alumni. Thanks to this appalling so called educational institution I will NOT be able to seek accreditation in my country for the 30 year teaching career i hold in this country. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE, their complaints system does not work because they don’t care!

I completed my MA here in 2020 and I was very strained by the challenges manoeuvring between overworked and underpaid teachers and a highly demanding course. I was lucky to have a great tutor who helped me. I was proud to graduate.

Three years later I returned for a higher degree and left after 6 months. I lost 2k and walked out. The place is unrecognisable. There is a beautiful new gym however that makes the pain only worse because it suggests things are getting better.

For me it was a con. I was over promised and totally underdeliveted on. The department was not what I expected at all. The staff were severely at risk of redundancy, which they almost certainly knew when they signed me up, it was a dysfunctional chaos that turned into a petty blaming culture. I was shocked at what the university has become.

Even the nicest staff seemed unable to get it together anymore. The Union is also shredded and ineffective.

I had to take myself out completely because it was really depressing me and dragging me off centre.

What’s worse is that their disabilty awareness across the staff is negligible they don’t seem to care either way even at a management level.

I found senior staff I dealt with spent their time projecting problems on to students instead of accepting and dealing with issues such as a lack of disability support.

Very hard to get anything done. What is worse is that the university has big investment plans but has put 600 staff at risk.

Very sad to say for now I would strongly avoid.

How to check your conditional offer letter

It was some time ago that I was a mature student on the Early Years Course at Portsmouth University. Worst decision of my life. The staff and some students had an obsession and focus on lone parents and attacking them. One particular student shouted out a comment that lecturers allowed her to get away with just because her parents could pay the tuition fee upfront. I made a complaint to the board of something and was then sent to the Head for a telling off, telling me if it was a genuine complaint I would've gone to him. But did it really matter as the handbook/guidance said go to the Board of something for complaints.I stayed way too long, overworked and was over civil to students who got away with illegal behaviour/comments which is bad in childcare really. I never even got a degree. But I am still paying a monthly student loan fee out of my wages to pay lectures who treated me like that. Date was 2012!

As a mature student studying a degree in Virtual and Augmented Reality, who has just completed his 3rd year at Portsmouth University. I have to say I have had an awful experience. From studying online in the first year and being charged full tuition fees, to having my student support cancelled in the 3rd year. I can with my hand on my heart say I have had an awful education there. Think twice before you enroll.

I had an excellent experience at the University of Portsmouth. I was part of an exchange programme and got to stay 6 months in this university. I would gladly recommend their school of applied languages to anyone interested in that field.

I've always dreamed of going to University and kind of put it off for several years. Now as a mature student jumping straight in I can safely say its been an amazing experience.
We've just had the Freshers Fair and joined about 4 Societies which has been incredible for learning new names and faces.

I’ve just started my final year at the University and I can safely say it was 100% the right choice for me. The support from the lecturers is brilliant, the facilities are amazing and the variety of services that are available for students to access is excellent. If I have ever had a problem there was always a service that the university offers that could help me. If I had to choose a university again Portsmouth would still be my first choice.

There is excellent support at the University of Portsmouth, I've had an amazing experience here for my undergraduate so much so I'm back for my Masters! There's so many opportunities whilst studying like placements and work experience, but also outside of learning with hundreds of societies to get involved with and meet new people. Portsmouth has been such a rewarding place to study, I highly recommend!

I am now going in to my second year at uni of Portsmouth and I really can’t wait to get started.
Given the circumstances of last year with covid, my lecturers did everything they could to give us the best experience and help possible. We even managed to get a lot of face to face teaching and lab work which was a lot more than other people could get.
The university RESLIFE team are also brilliant, when I had issues within my flat, reslife helped to resolve and sort them straight away.
I had a great first year and I’m sure it’ll only get better.

I personally believe that the University of Portsmouth is an excellent University to attend, as I believe it ticks all of the boxes, making it an all-round great destination for students.

For example, the quality of teaching at the University is fantastic. Many of their courses are TEF Gold standard, and despite my first year being entirely online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I do not feel that I have missed out too much in terms of the quality of teaching from my lecturers.

I am a journalism student, and the quality of teaching and support from my lecturers has been superb so far. It has allowed me to remain extremely motivated to continue to learn and improve, despite the challenges of the pandemic. It is clear to see that the lecturers have a great knowledge and experience in this field. The course also allows me to undergo an NCTJ diploma, meaning that I will have another qualification on my CV at the end of my studies, as well as my degree, helping me stand out to future employers.

I am also really excited to access the wealth of resources available to students at the University, which is a major string to their bow, and a big part of the reason why I joined the University.

The University was also really helpful during my first year helping me to settle in, especially during the pandemic. There are lots of social events, such as Freshers’ Fair, which help you mix with new people and make lots of new friends. There are a wide range of sports clubs and societies on offer too, catering to anyone’s interests.

The city itself offers a great deal to students, with various clubs and bars for students such as Pryzm and The Astoria generating a fantastic atmosphere, and a buzz in the night-time. The city also boasts having a beautiful beach, which is ideal to go to on a sunny day with your friends, or as an escape from the potential stresses of reality. Finally, students can also visit Fratton Park to watch Portsmouth FC, and as a massive football fan myself, I personally cannot wait to attend games.

I would strongly recommend the University of Portsmouth to anyone thinking of going to University.

I studied Business Information Systems and it was a fantastic course for a variety of reasons. Firstly, the support that I got from my lecturers, they were really great. Any time I could pop into their office for a chat/coffee and talk about a specific topic that I was struggling with during my coursework assignment. They would sit down with me and help me to understand which boosted my confidence. I learnt a mixture of modules which helped me decide which career path I would like to go into when I graduate. I loved the fact that whilst having the lectures I was able to put that into context by doing the practical sessions. The lecturers have really good knowledge in their field and are very interactive.

Secondaly, I had a great opportunity to go out on a placement year working with an organisation in the industry which was one of the greatest things I enjoyed. I was able to network with other students and employees, work on critical projects, provide value back to the company and develop new skills and understand how the world of work actually is.

The University of Portsmouth really helped me prepare to gain a placement by providing me with feedback on my CV & Cover letter. The Careers and Employability team helped me develop my interview skills. I now feel confident when attending interviews and assessment centres.

Overall my University experience was great as in Portsmouth there are so many things I did as a student from walking along the Southea beach, joining different societies and going to movies with my friends at Vue Cinema. As I have enjoyed my Univeristy experience I am now going to do a Masters which I am excited about!

I study pharmacy at Portsmouth. The course content throughout the 4 years is great but it requires more organisation and equal balancing of the content by the staff. The university has great teachers, very friendly and helpful, who are willing to help during lectures but also after the class. The faculty has good facilities and materials needed for studies.
It's a city university but more feels like a campus based because most university buildings are few minutes away from one and another, it is easier to walk in between lectures. The library is open 24 hours so you can study at any time you like.
So far its been a great experience :)

I am just starting my 2nd year at the University of Portsmouth and I have been super impressed with how they handled the 1st year during the pandemic. I was apprehensive about starting and worried about the level of support I would receive whilst studying from home. However, I did not need to worry at all, all of the tutors and lecturers I encountered were super helpful at all times and pointed me in the right direction of specialist help when I needed it. All support resources were fab and whilst working as a key worker part time along-side university, the university were really accommodating with deadlines and any extra help I would need. I'm so excited to start back fully next week and continue my Portsmouth adventure
