Stuck in the past

The NRLA isn't without value, it’s fine for what it's always done. The advice is genuinely useful and the guidance on tenancy law is solid.

But it's an old organisation and it shows. The software feels dated, the mobile experience is terrible, and when it comes to Making Tax Digital I've felt completely on my own. For something that's been mandatory to prepare for, the support has been minimal at best.

In the end I decided to move on, there are simply better tools out there now that do more, cost less, and actually work on a phone. It's a shame, because the knowledge base is there. If they invested in the platform and got serious about MTD, I'd genuinely consider coming back.

A Modernized Platform: We’ve recently overhauled NRLA Portfolio, our property management platform. It now features Open Banking integrations to securely automate rent tracking and expense categorisation.
Serious About MTD: Far from being "on your own," we’ve launched a dedicated MTD Toolkit and the NRLA Portfolio Plus service, which is now HMRC-compatible. It’s designed to handle the quarterly updates and digital record-keeping that become mandatory for many in April 2026.
Mobile-First Integration: We’ve integrated our compliance arm, Safe2, directly into our digital tools, allowing you to order and track safety certificates from your phone with a single click.
Support for the Transition: For those struggling with the fragmented tax landscape, we’ve introduced specialized MTD training courses and step-by-step guides to help bridge the gap between traditional self-assessment and the new digital requirements.
We’ve kept the solid knowledge base you value, but we’re fine tuning the tools to bring it up to a modern standard. If you’re ever open to a second chance, we’d love to show you how much the "old organisation" has evolved.

NRLA is misleading: advice articles are advertisements for their own products

I have been a member for many years and been mostly happy. In the past year, they have started producing "advice" articles which are (poorly) disguised advertisements for their own products.

At the very minimum, the NRLA should be clear that an article is not impartial professional advice but an advertisement.

Website says: "A truly member-first organisation..."
It is highly misleading and dishonest of the NRLA to claim to serve the interests of landlords when it prioritises pitching products where the NRLA makes money.

For instance, they are constantly plugging their "Portfolio" product when there are many other solutions available that are ignored.

Staff do not have any knowledge

Staff do not have any knowledge, they look up everything on their website. They have given me incorrect information several times. I call back and ask the same question a few times and get different answers.

The NRLA's invaluable support

The NRLA gives invaluable support in legal difficulties, housing law and regulatrion and it has all the forms and leaflets ever-increasing bureacracy demands of landlords today. The advice line has instantly available expertise and knowledge and is an excellent asset to have on your side as landlords face the onslaught of the vindictive new law. And all for a modest subscription.

Portfolio software is poor, and charged after cancellation

trialled their subscription based portfolio portal, which is not worth signing up to imo, its very slow and frustrating, its not worth using. My main gripe for review is, even after cancelling the subscription in the trail period I was charged. When i queried this with NRLA they said i should cancel my subscription and i cant be refunded, so it was a bit of an arrogant response, their cancellation process is not fit for purpose and failed. I am trying again, i hope i dont get charged again.
