What a terrible company to work with..... Long wait times and unexperienced and unqualified service agents...

I have never had a more horrible experience with a bank in my life. Multiple phone calls, every time I called I got a different answer, long hold times and very very poor customer service. After finally loosing it with requesting a supervisor I was able to get the simple form I had requested for over a month. Then all the stuff i needed ended up in my mail box two weeks later after they told me it was sent over a month ago. Terrible!

My auto draft payment didn't post for the month of July. I get no emails, no text messages, no mail, no phone calls. I just so happen to login to my account and notice the past due amount. I quickly paid it. Since the payment was 34 days late, the bank informs me that it will be reported to credit bureaus. I haven't been late in 5 years! As a reward for my 5 years of no late payments, my credit will be dinged for something very stupid. The representatives were no help. Terrible way to do business.

These clowns bought my mortgage and now im stuck figuring out how to pay them through the phone
One month they give me an exact amount and the following I have to figure it out on my own and the automated messaging is awful.
I just want to pay my bills and they make it feel like im jumping through hoops just to do so. Honestly the worst bank ever they are a parasite that needs to be removed from this country.

Horrible customer service. Impatient, rude and hang up on you. For a company that is buying out mortgages and treating their new customers like this, will not only go out of business but will have people leaving in droves. I will be doing everything in my power to get away from them ASAP.

I have been a long time customer at People’s Bank and now M&T bank. I have two security boxes in the Fairfield branch of this bank. As long as I can remember, I have been able to access both my safety deposit boxes at the same time on every single visit!
Today , however, it was a different story. When I walked into the bank, the lady at the front desk was on the phone , conversing in Spanish to I presume a client. She looked up after about 8-10 minutes and said to me that she would be on the phone for a while. I said no problem, and I sat down. In the meantime, one of the tellers walked over to me and asked if she could help me. .I said yes , I told her I wanted to access my two safety deposit boxes. I showed her the two keys to the boxes and my ID. She went to the drawer, pulled out the folders with my deposit numbers, but then was interrupted by the first person (the Spanish speaking, lady, whose name is Rosa) who told her that I could only access one box at a time and that this was bank policy. I told her I needed to transfer contents between my two boxes and I needed access to both boxes simultaneously. She was adamant about this policy and would not agree to my accessing the safety deposit boxes simultaneously , like I have always done! I asked to speak to the manager and was told that the manager was not in the office and I could contact him at a later date.
I just want to say that this has never been my experience in all the years I have been accessing my safety deposit boxes at this bank. I have always been able to take both boxes at the same time. I had to go back-and-forth three times to get the job done and each time I had to come out show my identity sign again and then again go back in to access the same box!, Not only was this unnecessary and inconvenient but also a ridiculous waste of time! As a customer, I’m very dissatisfied with my experience today. And if this is indeed the new policy of the bank, then I would like to take my banking elsewhere.

Horrible, rude customer service. Wrong information, locked out of account to check on loan closure, very time consuming and difficult to reach the correct department by phone. All was well until we sold our vehicle and closed the account. Then we had to interface with HORRIBLE customer service. This is the worst bank ever! They do not work for their customers who are the reason they're in business. NEVER do business with this bank if you can help it!

Contacted M&T bank for payoff spoke with representative he verified payoff gave them routing numbers bank account number transaction was made. I go online a week later to see that there’s a balance of $7.71.. customer service agreed but did not remove balance or close account. When you are given a payoff amount for that day and you make the transaction electronically that day that is 100% their fault in their error and they are not correcting it as of yet.

Opened a new account online. Was forced to upload the ID online on a fishy third party site. Was threatened with the closure of account if I did not upload to their fishy site, eve though I went to the bank branch for the identification. Will not recommend even to my foes.

I opened an account at a local M&T branch. I decided I wanted to make a small investment in crypto currency. I went into the bank to make a wire transfer into my crypto account. About half an hour later I received a text telling me that my account was frozen due to suspicious activity. I went back to the bank and answered some additional questions. Later that day my account was unfrozen and the transfer went through. I don't know why my account was frozen being that the transfer was being done at the branch itself. But then a day or two later,I received a call from the bank telling me that a regional manager, or something like that, told me to come and close my account.I knew banks don't like crypto. But when did they get the authority to tell me what I can and cannot do with my own money? I didn't know that there were businesses in this country that act like Russia and North Korea. Steer clear of this bank if you want them to control your money! They are a joke!!!

My thing is I give them props for helping me with a auto loan to pay on my vehicle. On the other hand, when it comes down to working with them, they tend to get a little antsy or a little fidgety when it comes to late payment and it's not due that I want to be late. It's situations that come up that I'm a little late. They will work with you but when it comes to paying them and letting them know that you're paying them, they really don't care about the customer. All they care about is their money

Every year, my escrow analysis statement is impossible to interpret, and I'm convinced it's designed that way. It's never correct and no one there can ever figure it out or how to fix it. I make extra escrow payments and still short every year. Customer service is terrible and unhelpful.

Our loan was sold to this bank, and they are pretty bad. I always overpaid on the loan, and they would never apply it to the principal, but rather just deduct it from the next several payments. They want to suck every penny of finance out of you.

I want to pay off the loan cause I am selling the vehicle, but the bank does not offer the online capability for a payoff letter. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with them to try to get one, but they cannot email or fax it. They offered to us the US postal service but that would take 5 business day so with the weekend that would be 7 days and only allow 3 days remaning on the payoff letter and transfers cannot be made that fast.
It also appears that they use offshore call centers, so your personal banking information, address, and social security number are available to foreigners if you call them.

I would say that if this bank gets your loan you should refinance immediatly.

less than 1 star. They wouldn't let me make a payment on a overdraft because my account was closed and I had to have a checking account through them to pay. They kept revolving we need your account number, I gave it to them, we need your last payment, I don't know over 20 years ago because I don't overdraft. They don't have online records that go back that far and then they only said you have to come in to the bank to verify...EXCUSE me, I live on the other side of the country. Well sorry if you cant verify your last payment then we can't verify you and there is extra security. So you're telling me I have to hop in a plane and fly across country to pay $200??? you have my account info, why can't I pay with a wire transfer, zelle, literally anything, you're a bank!!!I'm literally trying to give you money, but you don't want it so you can keep charging fees?? I see your business model and its a scam. The customer service rep was the worst but I do have to give her props because she stuck to her script and the garbage policies from the company. Do yourselves a favor and dump this bank ASAP!!!!

I've had my account open for 1 week, and I've never in my life experienced so many varying problems that required a call to customer service. It's literally every single day. Not sure why anyone would actually bank with M&T other than for the $300 bonus they're currently advertising. But even that isn't worth it.

This bank is the wordt so far. They bought my mortgage while in the middle of a loss mitigation, so I’m on a 3 month payment plan. it’s been non stop calls nonstop letters, people coming to my house verifying that my home is occupied. It’s crazy!! I hate them already and it’s only been 2 months in.

This bank has the worst customer service people working , EVER! They are very rude. Impatient. They hang up on you and are cold. I had to give my social to find my card number and they still refuse to help me. I been dealing with this for over a year and nothing ever changes . I shredded the credit card and just mail on payments. I am also closing my checking account..I dislike this bank very much and also alerting my friends and family not to bank with this Evil Bank

This bank bought my mortgage and I quickly learned that they are deceptive and have poor agents so far as respectful and poor customer service skills. They break federal regulations in dual tracking a temporarily struggling customer by repeatedly rejecting mortgage assistance applications with the same forms with various reasons the customer should redo the forms all the while they progress on with the intent to foreclose and lying about temporarily causing that route until your application has been processed and reviewed. Legitimate questions to their point of contact agents is met with sarcasm, mislead information , and other disrespectful responses. They stated June 24th they had not reviewed my application but they had assigned it to a foreclosure attorney. Every time I had scraped up the two payments behind then the third they made it mandatory to pay one or two more payments in days time and finally attorney fees etc because their intentions are to foreclose and such up the equity and no excuse or hardship or HUD or other credit counseling or weekly calls looking to saving your ho.e or shifting to selling it to satisfy the less than 1/4 the fair market value remaining principle after 18 years of payments never late or less than the full amount ever being a problem until a severe health hardship hit and responsibly we made 2 years of payments without income. If they purchase your. Mortgage refinancing would be my strong suggestion. They are going to be dealing with us for a while i plan to sue, I plan to report to FHA HUD attorney General and the consumer protection complaint department with more evidence than they expect to prevent them doing the same thing or similar things breaking laws and expecting people to give up and be too overwhelmed to build a case. Horrible greedy leadership

I recently tried to open an account at M&T Bank local branch in Long Island New York.
Everything was good until they ran a report on me called Chexsystems.
They said sorry we can't open an account for you. You have a red flag on chexsystems. Chexsystems is like a background check.
I inquired from chexsystems what the problem was. Turns out there was no problem with me.
But M&T has a policy that if you had an account and closed it , they will not give you a new account. I did have corporate account with them for many years. The local branch in west Babylon was delightful. 3 years ago I retired and sold my company. Of course I closed my corporate account. Now I had come back to open a personal account and they refused me saying that
their policy was not allow previous customers back.
How bizarre is that?

Worst bank I've ever dealt with for an auto loan.

I called three days in a row requesting a payoff release letter showing that my vehicle loan had been paid in full on 07/01/2026. Each time, I was told the letter would be emailed to me. After the third call, I was finally informed that they do not email payoff release letters. FYI - todays date is 07/15/2026

In this day and age, it's hard to believe a financial institution cannot securely email such an important document. Instead, I was told I would have to wait 7–10 days for it to arrive by mail, delaying my ability to complete my transaction.

The lack of communication, inconsistent information from customer service, and outdated process show very little regard for their customers' time. I would not recommend this bank for an auto loan.
