I had a really frustrating experience…
I had a really frustrating experience with Meridian Energy.
Due to an error on their side, my email address was recorded incorrectly, so I never received my bills. I only found out after chasing them multiple times to fix the issue. Instead of taking responsibility, they sent me a large overdue bill and immediately expected me to start paying $50 per week, on top of paying the current bill in full.
I explained that I have a mortgage and other financial commitments and simply asked for a short extension to manage the payments properly. This was refused, even though the situation was caused by their own mistake.
It’s disappointing to see such a lack of flexibility and accountability. Customers shouldn’t be penalised for errors they didn’t make. I expected better communication and a more reasonable solution.

I'm an existing customer, Meridian presumably don't care about us; this is the second time I've waited for customer service to answer my call. I gave up after 30 minutes wait earlier this morning. I am still on the line after 45 minutes of waiting. Not good enough Meridian. I am not proud of the fact that I have shares in this company that does not value its customers
Poor customer service
Meridian recently sent me an email of expected rises from April the 1st. The increases amount to more than a 10% increase from my current bills. I sent an email asking why the increase was so high when in the media it was stated there would be a 5% increase. I got a reply stating that they would look into it and get back to me. A week later I am still waiting for a response. I also find calling Meridian a waste of time as their wait times on hold exceed an hour. Not a good company to deal with and also disappointed to learn the last year they boasted the highest profit of New Zealand power companies at $288 million. Disappointed with them considering that I was originally a customer back in 2001.
Unbelievable!!
Unbelievable!!! I was switched over to this company from Flick. my bill increase was HUGE. I reached out to them on multiple occasions, got slow responses that didn't answer any of my questions, they didn't open an investigation as I requested. I also requested they PAUSE any automatic payments until this matter was resolved and they told me that 'there currently are no automatic payments set up on the account'... but there were!!! They continued to put through these payments which got dishonoured even though I was in an active dispute, and then recorded it on my credit!!!! Terrible company omg... absolutely shocking. Avoid this company!!!
Meridian when Flick closed…
I had to join Meridian when Flick closed for me about Nov 2025. My first bill is 25% higher than the average bill in the past despite it being summer. Not a happy chappie - hope to find a less rapacious company.
I feel like I've been scammed
when I had solar panels , I called Meridian for questions.
They told me that it takes 5 working days to getting in/out meter to put on, So we switched over to Meridian.
We sent to all documents and authorized to contact to solar install company for have all informations which they need.
I contacted after over weeks, they told me it's takes 10 working days.. so waited to contact with us but nothing happened. I called after 2 weeks, they told me need more documentation, I supplied documents to them.
They told me again its take 10 working days to install meter.
meanwhile I have received power bill for $334.63 for 2 weeks. I never paid so much expensive power bill.
I contacted them again abut still telling me it's take 10 working days. I pointed out that it's already nearly a month. Last week (2026) a guy called me for meter install my house, he told me that it will be 24th of February...I just lost a words..meanwhile I have received most expensive power bill -estimate this month..

Rip-off merchants with poor customer service
My flat is on a sewage pump that has a separate power supply from my house. It uses very little power, but the line charges are the killer. We found Flick offered the least worst deal, but Flick has just been bought out by Meridian. The result is a 100 % jump in the power bill for the sewage pump. Why? Because Meridian has put us on a business rate - I only found that out after a 30 minute wait on the phone and then a 20-min conversation with someone who didn't speak very good English. She said she'd look into it (or that's what I understood), but today all I've got is an email saying "yes, unfortunately the sewage pump is on a business rate". What sort of customer service is that? Why should I pay a business rate to use the toilet in my own home?
Terrible switching experience
Meridian is switching everyone over from Z/Flick and are moving everyone over onto crazy expensive plans and are impossible to get hold of or never reply to emails to get the pricing for the other plans they offer. They also couldn't provide a date of when we would move from Z so now my account is stuck in limbo land on who knows what pricing and there is nothing I seem to be able to do about it. Such a poorly managed transition process

My Personal Experience With Meridian Energy Has Been Nothing But Exemplary. FromThe Day Of Sign Up Until This Very Day. I'm Very Happy To Say They Have Stepped Forward And Iron Out Any Situation I May Have. I've Over The Years Had Fallen On Hardship And They Were More Than Happy To Figure Out A Plan That Worked For Them But Moreso For Me.
I've Been With Them For Over 10 Years Probably It Could Be A Lot Longer. First Responders Are Always Cheerful And Delightful No Matter What Time Of Day I Call. Remember, You Are " ONE Person, ONE Company " Things Take Time People Are So Busy Rushing And Have A Sense Of Entitlement. People "Calm The Farm" Get A Grip And Relax. There Could Be Any Number Of Reasons Things Are Taking Longer Than Expected. This Day And Age We Know Everyone Is Using The Automated System, Every Company Has A Kaupapa ( Protocols) They Have To Follow. Don't Take It Personally. STOP Being So Precious And Dramatic. No Matter What Service Provider You Use This IS The Reality And New Norm. 100% ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ Meridian Energy. Poor to non existing customer service
I filled in the moving form on Meridian's website weeks ago with no response. When the moving day was only 2 days away I called them, but couldn't get an answer excepte that someone from a different team would call me back, "hopefully within 2-3 days".
To make things when I first requested the move it was possible to take the plan I had with me. But by the time I got a response the plan was then apparently not available anymore. What a poor frustrating experience. Not only was the customer service and the response time terrible but the delay in their service was then also to my disadvantage and not rectified.
Worst customer service ever
Worst customer service ever. Their meter also broken for about 3 months and not sending signal, funnily enough when they fixed this my power bill was double just for those 3 months... when questioned about this I have had customer service reps hang up on, cust9mer resolution staff member ashleigh curtis overlooks questions in our email chat and refuses to put me on to her management. This has been ongoing since June 24, it is now January 25. Wouldn't use again, have changed providers to powershop.
No Customer Care @Meridian Energy
Meridian didn't send invoices for about 6 months because apparently, emails were bouncing. However, I requested they test my email and miraculously the emails arrived. Instead of reaching out with some customer care after a couple of bounced emails, they decided to wait until the bill was horrendous. Now that their revenue collection is threatened they can suddenly reach out daily. Go figure! No apology what so ever. Meridian is a terrible outfit.

This company is terrible, I have signed up the contract with them, I have no idea how do they read the meter. Every month cost us around 300NZD. However, my friends with other contractors use the same appliances but max 100 NZD. Never go for this option, terrible services.

My family have been with Meridian for a little over 6 years and have had on and off problems, but today we moved to a new place and meridian have been advising that they will turn our power on (3 weeks ago) and we have now moved to our new place, called the after hours spoke to a horrible horrible customer service rep (shantell) who basically sarcastically told my dad (73 yrs old) that if he needed hot water that bad as an urgent he should just go to the hospital. Then tried to ask her to give us a solution and all she said was OMG I'm trying to tell you but you guys don't seem to listen. Like who talks like that? Worst customer service experience ever
Worst company I've ever dealt with
Worst company I've ever dealt with. 3 months to install a smart meter. Still not installed. They have no control over the contractors they work with who are all work shy and make new excuses every time not to do the agreed work. In the meantime I'm being charged double the rate I should be. My average bill with Pulse was $80 per month. Meridian charged me $350 in first month. In the time it's taken them to do nothing, I've had a new roof, gutters and solar put in. Ready to leave... Hate this company! I've sat at home on multiple occasions with no shows and it takes them over 1 month to organise another person to come out. Customer services are cheeky and not helpful. It's now cost me thousands in lost earnings having to spend endless hours on phones and emails. There is no escalation route from a facilitator other than ombudsman. They do not care about customers, absolute joke of a company!!
