Since 1990, The School for Dutch, located in the heart of the popular expat neighbourhood De Pijp in Amsterdam, has been helping students of all levels improve their Dutch language skills. We offer a variety of courses at convenient times, with a strong focus on speaking and real-life communication. From simple situations like ordering at a supermarket to more in-depth conversations with colleagues or friends, our lessons prepare you for everyday life in the Netherlands. We have created a safe, comfortable and “gezellige” learning environment where you are encouraged to make mistakes and learn through trial and error — just like you did when learning your first language as a child. Our method, Dutch the Natural Way, has helped expats build confidence in Dutch for over 30 years. We believe that language is first and foremost a tool for communication, which is why we encourage students to start speaking Dutch from day one. In the beginning, it’s important to keep things simple. Rather than focusing too much on grammar rules and details, we help you build confidence by speaking first — and refining accuracy as your skills improve. Many learners wait until they feel their Dutch is nearly perfect before they start speaking. In reality, this is exactly what holds them back. “Dutch the natural way” is a highly interactive method focused on real communication and genuine connection. Most importantly: Have loads of fun while learning!

I had a fantastic experience at The School for Dutch and highly recommend it to any working professional looking to improve their language skills.

The biggest draw for me was the scheduling. Finding a high-quality school that offers classes after business hours is a game-changer. It made it incredibly easy to balance a full-time job with consistent learning without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

A huge shout out to Jeroen van den Berg! Jeroen is an exceptional teacher who brings a lot of energy and expertise to the classroom. He makes the nuances of the Dutch language accessible and engaging, ensuring that everyone feels confident participating.

If you are looking for an effective, flexible, and welcoming environment to learn Dutch, this is the place to go.

Learning Dutch can be fun

I took all 3 courses that the School for Dutch offers and couldn't be more pleased. The fact that grammar is only covered to the extent that is needed for speaking is a huge plus for me. Classes are quite dynamic and the groups are big enough to increase interaction with other students but still small enough to keep things gezellig. Also, Jeroen is not only a great and engaging teacher, but also a genuinely kind person. Going to evening Dutch class after work never felt like a chore which is truly saying something. I highly recommend the School for Dutch for anyone trying to navigate the language and overall cultural integration.

Most recommended school for expats

When I moved to the Netherlands in 2018 my parents got recommended this school for their dutch lessons. Their dutch improved significantly after being taught by Jeroen, as Jeroen teaches very naturally by teaching speaking first followed by reading and writing

Jeroen makes learning Dutch a fun…

Jeroen makes learning Dutch a fun experience. I recommend this course if you are an expat with limited time and energy, but enough will to learn the basics of the Dutch language and start speaking in your daily life.

Best Dutch School in Amsterdam!

Very effective natural-language approach that prioritises conversation. It really works! Jeroen is a phenomenal teacher and very kind - the environment is nice and the structure of the lessons helped me a lot learning the language without too much stress on grammar. Highly recommended!

The best language school ever!

This is definitely the best school I've attended in the 12 years I've lived in Amsterdam. It's the only one that uses a natural learning method, meaning speaking first, followed by writing and rules. It's exactly what children do when they learn a new language.
Jeroen is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and prepared, always ready to help you and repeat things over and over until they stick in your head.
What can I say... I learned more in one course at this school than in all the other courses I've taken so far... so many I can't even remember the number...
