Avoid at all costs, shady business practices, unfriendly staff
This review is about "Kamps Bäckerei mit Backstube" in the "Berlin Hauptbahnhof" train station.
Avoid this place. They submitted a false EU "defamation" complaint against a google review as a means to censor the unfavorable review!! (Forcing Google to remove the review and preventing my account from posting on their page ever again). That is just not acceptable in the slightest...
Want less 1-star reviews (they still have many...)? Then simply treat people with enough decency that we don't all immediately run to the reviews to warn others. Acting calmly towards your customers is a worryingly low bar to be asking for.
Original review they want to censor (July 27, 2023):
We were yelled at, while calmly packing up, because we had 1 container from another nearby business on the table (we bought many items from this place and these items were still clearly displayed on the table). That container was present because of dietary restrictions that this business could not accommodate for.
So, still yelling from behind the counter... of which we basically didn't understand a thing other than him waving his finger to the door and saying "exit" (we don't speak much german)... we were clearly being kicked out. There was no attempt at a conversion, or even a stern warning, or even politely asking us to leave, just an out of the blue "get out!!".
The family stood there dumbfounded at what was happening, but didn't attempt to argue and left since we felt extremely unsafe at this point (he was still yelling as were walking out the door).
Please note that we never spoke to or provoked this employee beforehand. Negative stars if I could..
Additional information since the original review:
I sent a message to their corporate email right after posting the review to report the worrying behavior of their employee at this location. This was their reply:
"The consumption of third-party products is of course not permitted in our locations, even if our products are also purchased. However, we regret very much how this was conveyed. I will immediately pass your concern on to the area management and hope that the situation will improve through training and discussions." (Jul 28, 2023)
Had this been the original interaction, there would be no 1 star review here today. We may have even had the time to explain that the dietary restrictions were the reason for this violation of policy. Words matter.
Then, a year and a half later (Jan 10, 2025), I receive an email notification from Google informing me that this business forcibly removed the review by filing a defamation complaint, even though they originally apologized at the time?.. Nope, not ok. Your history exists and should not be erased. Who knows, maybe they fired the employee and are now trying to clean up their tainted reputation? If so, just let me know by email that "the problem was addressed" (you clearly have my email), and I would have updated the review and possibly upgraded the star ratings to 3-4 for taking real action. However, given the way they attempted to delete the review, I doubt that they've changed much at all.
At the time when the review was posted, they were sitting at around 2.x stars on Google (I remember this because of how few places manage to get such a low rating unless it's a scam). They've coincidentally now upgraded all the way to 3.5 stars on Google but I doubt that removing my review alone changed the rating by that much. You can probably guess what is happening here...
